QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

DBB's Daily Stat Break

So how "clutch" is Troy Smith?

Maybe the other quarterbacks just went against tougher defenses in their big games. We certainly know that Brady Quinn did  .

To factor out this possibility, let's show the world how each of the top quarterbacks from last year fared in Big Games, compared to their opponent's average passing efficiency defense. In other words, take the aggregate passing efficiency defense from your 2 biggest opponents, and subtract that from your passing efficiency in those games. This should give us a clear picture of how well each quarterback performed relative to his level of competition in big games.

Any Questions?

Notes:
  • I counted Colt Brennan's games against SDSU and USC as his "Big Games" just to be nice. He didn't play in a bowl game, or in any "Big Games" by Troy Smith's standard.
  • Drew Stanton played out of his mind against us, and I had to include that as a "Big Game" because MSU didn't go to a bowl.
  • Apart from these 2, for whom I made charitable choices for "Big games"; no one came within 10 points of Troy Smith.
  • The Big 10 had 3 of the Top 4, and they're all coming back this year. The duel between Stanton and Smith in East Lansing should be a great one.
EDIT: My spread-sheets are starting to become radioactive from the greatness of Troy Smith. I'm going to give them a rest and pick this feature up again the week before the Northern Illinois game. That week, I will focus on the duel between Troy and NIU's Phil Horvath. Horvath, apart from having a great last name, may be the best quarterback in the MAC this year.

Great Thanks

Best video to date. Great job, Lazlo.

Those stats are amazing though. It really, like you said, validates what I think we all knew already.

In that video, there's a play versus Iowa where TS pulls it down, scrambles and hits someone right on the money. Awesome. When's the first game damnit!

Oh, I secured tickets to the Texas game for my Dad and I on Friday. Anyone else going? I've never been to Texas for longer than 1-2 layover. Other than our bowl game, this is going to be the best game of the year!

I made a Troy for Heisman video also. I posted it in Mili's forum, but I guess I should stick it in this thread too.

more stats...

OK, I tried to stop... I really did... This is the last time I swear. No more stats until football starts... maybe

Today's look at the greatness of Troy Smith has to do with his dominance of one of the best conferences in all of college football.

What would you say if I told you that last year, the PAC 10 and the Mountain West had the quarterbacks with the highest passing efficiency, on average? I believe your collective response would be, "Duh, they don't play defense." You would, collectively, be right.

Right behind the "no defense allowed" conferences is the Big 10. Four spots above the SEC, Six spots above the Big 12, Seven spots above the ACC.

The Big 10 also had 2 more quarterbacks in the Top 25 than any other conference. In fact, the ACC's one QB in the Top 25, as well as C-USA's 3, were all ranked below the 5th ranked QB in the Big 10. (Edit: The Big 10 is also the only conference to return ALL of its Top 25 QBs)

In a conference with more top quarterbacks than any other...

In conference games only (no big differences in schedule strength)...

Troy Smith had a passing efficiency 25.4 points better than his nearest competitor.

Today's reminder of the consumate greatness of Troy Smith gets directly to the heart of the matter.

What do you think of when I say "Troy Smith"?
  • Victories against tsun?
  • Cool under fire?
  • Big plays when they're needed most?
You could take all of the "first impression" thoughts of everyone on this board and they could be summed up with one word:

CLUTCH!!

Until now, this has been neither more nor less than the common knowledge of all Buckeye fans based on watching Troy play. But now, if someone asks which QB in Division IA you would want when all of the marbles are on the line; you can point to the table below and show them that there is an objective answer to that question.

To put it another way: Of the top 13 QBs in America last year (those with efficiency > 150); which had the highest aggregate rating against:
  • Their Rival
  • Their Bowl Opponent
If the team didn't make it to a bowl, I just took the games against the two biggest opponents. The results are shown below as "Big Game Efficiency":

Neither Phil Horvath nor Brian Johnson played in their respective teams' biggest games.
Brady Quinn's numbers were low because he had to play against Ohio State's defense for one of his "big games". Sucks to be him.

There you have it Buckeye fans. Troy Smith is hands down the best big game QB in the country.

You already knew that. But if you're anything like me, it's nice to see it in bold print.
wish you would have told him this before penn state last year :smash:

Um yeah...

Having an injury throw a freshman into the OL starting lineup when he has to go up against Tamba Hali in an environment where that freshman has to watch to see the ball snapped because he can't hear the count... mmm-hmmm... that can have a big effect on your QB.

That was also before the "light went on"; when he was still looking to make plays with his legs, rather than looking to make time with his legs.

This year, the nittany kittens are in serious trouble.

I would still maintain that nobody would have beaten Penn State on that particular night. That was an incredible atmosphere with the "white out."

A good :48 home video of the "We Are" chant from before PSU took the field:

We easily could have, if Troy Smith post PSU showed up instead of Troy Smith pre PSU.
