QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Anybody else spot the irony that he was cleared on the technicality that he was paid for the camp? Good thing they paid for his overnight stay. :)

But because Smith was hired to be at the camp, his presence fell outside the scope of NCAA rules, the school said.
"It was something that he was employed to do, so it falls underneath the category of student-athlete employment," Ohio State spokesman Steve Snapp said. "It was not a promotional or educational activity."

The camp paid for Smith's overnight accommodations -- his only form of payment, Snapp said.

The Big Ten said on Monday that it agreed with the school's findings. A message seeking comment was left with the NCAA.

All I know is that Troy Smith exercised bad judgement in not attending a class and that he may have failed to notify coaches, with the result that he drew negative attention on himself and Ohio State football. I am not prepared to damn him to eternally warming the bench and still believe that he is our best quarterback, when compared to Justin Zwick. I haven't seen Boeckman enough to say. However, it also is clear to me that we have just about the best coach in college football and he will be applying his mind to the best way to win that NC, with Troy Smith in the lineup or on the bench. I'm looking forward to seeing what he decides, and it's coming soon!!!!

Racially Driven Issues with Troy Smith???

While driving home today, I was listening to the Big Show with Bruce Hooley and Herbie. The topic at the time was to decide if Ohio State fans criticism/questioning of Troy Smith's recent drama was racially motivated?!

Herbie was stating that Troy did nothing wrong, yet tOSU fans were calling in and writing emails voicing their concern and displeasure for his judgement. He and Hooley were stating that they could not figure out why the fans were so livid and the only explanation they could think of was that it might be racially driven.

I must say; that while I typically enjoy listening to the Big Show and generally agree or at least understand what Herbie and Hooley are saying; I am completely flabbergasted by this discussion. I have to believe that the ONLY reason they had this discussion was for ratings and controversy. I find it laughable that this was a serious conversation today!?

The arguments and examples of Buckeye Nation not being racially motivated are numerous and everywhere, so I don't think the argument needs to be made, but why would this even be brought up? Am I extremely naive and blind, and just am not seeing their side of the story?

Sounds like they said "we are at a loss, the only possible explanation we can think of is that its racially driven"

That doesn't suggest that some are being racist, rather that that would be the only possible reason they could see... and a poor one at that.

jwinslow,

I understand what you are saying, unfortunately that is not how it came off. Maybe I am looking too far into it, but from what I heard I don't know how can they make that assertion or even entertain that thought? There is no reason at all to even make that statement, except for controversy/ratings. Can anyone honestly look at Troy's situation and not understand what some individuals concern is?

It should be noted, that I disagree with the "callers" of reference and that I think Troy Smith is our best quarterback and I want him starting as soon as possible. Also, I do think that had he not had the run-in last year we probably would not have heard about this particular case.

The issue that needs brought to task, however, is the attempt to turn this into a race issue. Had this been Zwick, Youboty, Hawk, or Ginn; those same people would have the same reaction. To me this NOT a race issue.

Not going to claim an "I told you so" for I din't tell anyone Troy would be cleared of any infractions. However, I did hold out hope that there was some manner or means by which his participation in the McNair Football camp fell outside the rules .. glad that my hopes for this type of outcome were borne out by the facts.

Onward to September.

For Immediate Release
July 25, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio: ...Even though there were no Big Ten or NCAA rule violations committed by Smith, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel expressed disappointment over his quarterback’s decision to attend the camp at the expense of missing a class.
“Anytime a student-athlete misses a class, it is unacceptable,” said Tressel. “Troy understands how I feel about the situation and knows there will be consequences.”
From the press release the other day.

Seems like Hooley is already making Herbie dumber or that Coach Tressel is a racist.

Herbie is way off base with this one. I think Smith is our best QB talent wise......Green, Brown, Red, White, it doesn't really fucking matter too much. If you don't follow the rules.....regardless of how petty they are, you would not be the starting QB of my team. This is not a racial issue......why didn't Herbie state that the booing of Zwick during the Spring Game was racially motivated.......

the real issue isn't racism....it's the fact that buckeye fans overreact to EVERYTHING.

the players know that troy is the man, and that's all that really matters. who the hell cares if some loser fans are questioning his leadership, as if they know anything about the guy.

Troy Smith is the leader of this team, like it or not, and y'all better get used to it.

Forget about who starts the texas game, how boeckman supposedly is rumored to look in practice, etc. If we roll into Ann Arbor undefeated, with 110,000 hostile fans bearing down upon you, ready for another fantastic chapter in a fantastic rivalry...who do you want behind center?

That's what I thought.

Troy Smith is a fine leader in my book. From what i have heard, the players are all behind him. He never tried to fight anything punishment OSU gave him but just said he made a mistake and owned up to it. Now he's trying to help out underprivlegded kids? That is what a leader does.

For now... I hope he dosn't prove me wrong.

Go Buckeyes!

BuckPride: Racism has next to nothing to do with Ohio State fans being pissed at Smith. They're pissed because he skipped classes to go to the camp, and on top of that he did so without informing the head coach or the AD as required. Although this is a relatively minor infraction (luckily, he didn't take any unauthorized reimbursements), it is a another infraction which starts to call into question his judgement and leadership-by-example.

This is an incredible assertion by Herbstreit! He knows very well that Buckeye fan nerves are raw after the unmitigated and disgusting attack that ESPiN perpetrated on Buckeye fans over the past two years, an attack that was mounted on grounds that proved to be baseless (Smith's violation came during the investigation) in one of the largest and most publicized investigations ever conducted by the NCAA. For that reason, many of us continue to boycott ESPiN, except to watch televised tOSU games.

For the Texas fans visiting this site, ESPiN was proven wrong in two waves of NCAA investigation. They knowingly reprinted as truth many allegations that had been proved false in the first wave of investigations and quoted their own "journalists" as sources in order to back up the story. ESPiN have not apologized, but rather had some of the announcers calling out other announcers on this and implying that they were "gosh, a bit out of line on that one". The result was serious damage to the Ohio State brand, ruining the life of Andy Geiger (a really good man who did a lot for tOSU athletics), and drawing tOSU sports teams under a microscope. There appears to be no rationale for the story, except that it was a campaign to gather ratings, and it stopped because the NCAA and Big Ten told them it better and ESPiN wanted to broadcast our upcoming game series.

So, it is understandable that some Ohio State fans over-reacted to the Troy Smith incident because they felt like this might just bring all that negative attention to the Buckeyes once again. Where is the surprise in that? The matter normally would not even have reached the public except that tOSU sports administrators don't want any chance of being seen as covering anything up.

C'mon. Do we really have enough trees in the world to print a daily census of all Div I football players who miss a class? Is this really news?

Many people on this site, including me, empathize with Herbtreit's position during this entire affair. His employer is attacking his alma mater. No doubt, he wonders where he might be if he lived under the same microscope that Troy Smith does. There are many reports on BP that he is "torn up" during all of this.

However, we do not all agree that all of Herbstreit's comments and actions should be seen in the context of being unable to not please his ESPiN masters. His actions and inactions have greatly undermined his integrity in the eyes of many Buckeye fans.

In particular, to give voice to allegations of racism in the matter of Troy Smith is simply unbelievable. And, for many Buckeye fans, it may be unforgiveable.

At the very least, these allegations provide ammunition from a perceived "insider" to those who would attack on the Ohio State fanbase in an attempt to weaken it. (Who wants to be known as part of a group of racists.)

Herbie, no matter how big that new house in Bristol is or how much try to distance yourself, Ohio will not wash off. You can't change what you are, but you can certainly hurt a lot of people who put you there. We are once again disappointed in you, not because you expressed a viewpoint that did not support Ohio State, but rather because you expressed one that was intended to hurt Ohio State fans and your reasons could not have had anything to do with good journalism. Just remember, one day, when your masters at ESPiN drop you like they did Graham Joffe and others, you may want to come home.
