QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I think it's very easy to say that he's not been defending the university or its fans lately. Do you disagree with that?
Yes I disagree. Who knows what goes on behind the scenes and what pressures he is put under. The fact he works for ESPN and avoids such comments speaks volumes with that damn network. Herbie is definitely innocent of that charge

im with strohs. at the end of the day herbie has to at least pretend to be somewhat partial. lets face it, things were looking pretty overcast in columbus for a while there. actually for a very long while. herbie spoke about his experiences at tOSU and that he never once seen anything to support MoC's allegations. but he can not call MoC a liar. its not his place to do so. same as it is not mark and trev's place to declair tressel and geiger guilty of wrong doing. the difference is herbie understands this.

Take off the scarlet glasses and look at our team for a second. While we all breath a sigh of relief that it was only Clarett and Smith (at least that's what we think) that got stuff, that is still a freaking big deal. If it turned out that Tennessee or FSU had ONLY two guys be proven guilty, we'd hardly feel bad about bad publicity.

Understand that most of us got pissed when it was just Clarett vs. Tressel based on nothing. Troy didn't prove them right about the Clarett claims, but he certainly didn't prove us right either about it being a one-guy issue.

Herbie & Tirico were fairly balanced in the way they addressed the issues. They did not have the option of not talking about that, as was seen by the agenda before, during and after the game. Heck, they planned to switch to a talk show if the game got boring (it wasn't even boring! Okie St was rallying for once... and nobody saw it).

If that game was shown on a small channel with no Trev/Mark attacks during pregame, halftime, and postgame... we would not have been nearly as touchy about the coverage.

Herbie may have been a little bit unsavory in running with someone's race comment. But he was not tearing down OSU, nor did he during the clarett stuff.

Heck, he was crucified a while back, before the Clarett & Smith explosions of negativity. All he said then was that OSU's offense stunk, which it did.

This is the fan base that at a freaking spring game booed one of its perfect citizens that was doing his best in horrendous weather. Consider how horrendous the OSU fanbase can be when evaluating whether some of the hatred towards Herbie is justified.

Does he purposely have some agenda against Ohio State? I don't think so. However, in light of what's been reported about his radio show regarding the Smith investigation and his comments last year when the Clarett allegations surfaced, I think it's very easy to say that he's not been defending the university or its fans lately. Do you disagree with that?

Sure do. It's not his job to "defend Ohio State", but rather to give his unbiased, objective opinions and observations. As a former Buckeye QB, I would expect him to be a little tougher in judging the actions and judgment (or lack thereof) of our QBs. If Alberts was constantly defending Nebraska or May defending Pittsburgh every time one of their players or coaches made the news in a less-than-positive way, you'd be all over their ass for being "homers". Yet you want Herbstreit to do the exact same thing because he's a former Buckeye player and you're a Buckeye fan. Smith made a not-so-smart decision to go to the camp while on suspension and skipping class to do so. Should he be hung out to dry for it? No. Should his judgment be questioned. Fucking right it should...

You're missing my point. I'm not at all bitter at Herbie or any other Buckeye fans for questioning Smith's judgment. I agree that because of the several incidents involving Smith (some of them only allegations, it turns out), Buckeye fans and Herbie are justified in being a little upset and questioning his judgment. What I do not think, however, is that Herbie is justified in even entertaining the argument that Buckeye fans' questioning Smith's judgment is racially motivated, when there is a much more likely reason that they're doing so--namely, that he has involved himself in the three aforementioned incidents. I didn't hear the radio show, but it's clear from this thread that the topic was discussed for awhile, and I think it's an insult to Buckeye fans that Herbie didn't quickly put a stop to it when, as you say, there is a much more obvious reason that everyone's questioning Smith's judgment.

Buckboy - You're ignoring the fact that it was a caller to the show that brought it up (the race issue). It's a valid discussion, as Smith is a black player and one wonders how hard fans would be on ... I don't know... say AJ Hawk. Personally, I'd like to think that if AJ was the one who was in Smith's shoes, people would have precisely the same reactions as they did with it actually being Smith who screwed up. However, I'm not so naive to think that there aren't those out there who would cut AJ more slack than they're willing to cut Smith. In other words, it's a valid talking point in today's world, though one I think - in my great society - would be a complete non-issue.

I don't give a crap what color Smith is. I just want him to score some fucking touchdowns.

I don't give a crap what color Hawk is. I just want him to blow some fuckers up.

But, not everyone thinks like that. You think Herbie shouldn't be entertainig the issue, and in that I think you agree with me that race doesn't matter. Great. That's at least 2 people who don't care. Believe me, there are PLEANTY who do. DOesn't make it right, but is worth discussion. You can't change the way people think without debate, and this ivory tower "dont even talk about it" bullshit does more harm to the race issue than good.

You're right -- race doesn't matter to me at all. I just want to watch the Bucks win football games and bring honor to the university. I'm assuming the rest of Buckeye Nation is with me on this one.

While you may not have explained it that clearly earlier in the thread, I do agree with your last post.
I don't know that Herbie was agreeing with the race issue, rather listening to callers to see why they would think that.

Tressel Presser/Troy Smith Punishment (merged)

Coach T says a "plan" would be in place for Troy Smith during fall camp that would serve as a disciplinary plan for Smith's having missed the class for a quarterback camp. He says if Smith handles that well, there will be no further action.

Tressel also says the team is in great shape academically but says expects no players to miss practice time this fall for issues other than academics or injury.

Also, the NCAA has notified OSU that it's date for responding to the NCAA's Notice of Allegations has been moved from July 29th to August 25th and that OSU's hearing before the infractions committee has been moved from September to December 9th and 10th... pretty convenient for the season!

All this per the O-Zone.
