QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

i'm not sure about any of you, but i'm getting pissed at the NCAA in this situation...
the rules are petty, arbitrary, and accomplish little, other than confusing people... sheesh what a lot of legal jargon...
the kids are not allowed to work, yet they are not allowed to recieve any money; though the member institutions and the NCAA, even though it is a non-profit organization, reap millions from the athletics... Jeremy Bloom comes to mind- that kid got ass-raped by the NCAA- those fuckers wouldn't even let him WALK ON to play college football, and why? BECAUSE HE WAS ON THE OLYMPIC TEAM??? Double You Tee Eff is THAT??!?!?? "you cannot participate in an NCAA sanctioned sport because your amateur status has been compromised because you are competing as an amateur"???? that is asinine at the most basic levels...
WHO FUCKING CARES who payed for the trip. it's not like it was a lot of money! shit, it takes like $40 for two people to go to the fucking movies these days! Troy went to help at a kids camp. sure, he probably received some advice from Steve McNair, but that is irrelevant since i'm sure that he could have been getting advice from any number of Former Ohio State and Current NFL players who are in and out of the WHAC... which i s one of the reasons kids go to schools like Ohio State...

it's bullshit, and i'm tired of it! SOMEONE needs to take the NCAA down a notch or two, but it won't happen, for the disgusting fact that people are too busy making a nice fat paycheck off of the kids to REALLY give a rat's ass about the individual student athlete...

er... [/rant]

I don't agree with that situation either, but Bloom wasn't allowed to go back to cfb because he had endorsement contracts. You are allowed to play a pro sport and go to college for another sport as long as you don't sign endorsements. He got screwed because endorsements are how skiers make their money. Sorry to blow your rant.

Fiu's take is reasonable.

Ask_CFN

Can you explain why Troy Smith attending a football camp is a violation of NCAA rules? Did he receive money to appear as a counselor? I have perused the rule, and I see he needs permission and cannot miss a class. If that is all this is, shouldn't students missing classes be governed by the professor of the specific class, rather than the NCAA? The NCAA has eligibility requirements that, in effect, regulate class attendance. If a student can miss 75% of the classes and pull a 4.0, why would the NCAA care? If a guy misses two classes and the professor flunks him, shame on the student. – RS

A: This one has me honked off. Yes, if he received money to be a counselor there would technically be a problem, but that's not why he's in trouble at the moment. He's in trouble for a ticky-tack foul.

I’m always on the side of the players thinking they should be able to take money, cars and whatever else boosters want to give them (do the players get a piece of the pie when their jerseys sell for $75 in the bookstore?), but Smith flat out broke a rule last year when he accepted $500. Fine. There's no argument there. This is different. Now he’s being tagged for missing class and not getting written permission from the athletic director for attending a football camp sponsored by Steve McNair. Ridiculous. What college student hasn’t missed a class or two here or there for reasons like a family emergency, sickness, or being too into a movie on cable? How many North Carolina Tar Heel and Illinois Fighting Illini basketball players attended every class during their run to the basketball national championship game? You’re right RS; if Smith flunks, that’s his problem. It’s time the NCAA started treating these players like adults.

If you really want to see players behaving badly...

This is an excerpt from a local tv stations online article:

"Freshman linebacker Tavares Kearney [UGA] -- from Tucker High School -- faces possible expulsion from the university after a teacher accused him of cheating on an exam and simple battery."
...
"The police report says Penn suspected Kearney of using his cell phone camera to cheat on a nutrition exam during summer classes last Friday."

When you think about all the players ,around the country, in THIS offseason alone who have engaged in serious CRIMINAL activity; this whole "incident" seems very, very minor.

"athlete-students are allowed to work"

yes, this is correct; however, how in the hell are they supposed to be able to do this, while still having to attend all their classes. getting a full scholarship to play a sport at a D1 level IS a full-time job. the only way i can see them pulling it off, is if they have easy classes; but since they have to go to every class, i still don't see where they can find the time and the energy. the job would have to involve sitting around inside doing very little, so that they could study on the job, while resting in between workouts.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

This incident has been mentioned in our 'Police/Legal Blotter' thread (the battery charge has been dropped).

Let's keep this thread to the topic of Troy Smith.
