QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

Let's give Boeckman a chance. Why exactly are we redshirting all these guys? To help NEXT year? We need help THIS year. For how pathetic this team is right now, I don't see why anyone should be "saved" for next year. Let's shake things up, like any elite program would do when they're not doing well. We've got stud recruits all over the place...throw them into the fire and see what they're made of. Haw? Put him in there and see if he's got any fire. Boeckman? Put him in place of our ineffective QBs. Lyons? Maybe he's the big play WR we need who will actually hold on to the ball. Dukes? Maybe he'll run the crisp routes everyone's yearning for. Mitchum/Person/Skinner? Can they really be any more unprepared/not ready than our current OL starters?

Bottom line: we've got elite recruits waiting in the wings, but what's the point of sacrificing an entire season so that they can get ready for next season. Other top schools don't seem to be as conservative with redshirts as we are, and it's a great way to keep attracting the best recruits.

Look at what Jarrett's doing in LA. Do you think we would have even considered playing him if he had stuck to his commitment to play here?

Okay....Gary H. believes that this kid won't challenge next year for the position. Mangold stated that it will be interesting to see the kid compete for the spot next Spring but could of been complimentary..

Does anyone else think this kid has a shot at the job next year as a starter; beating Troy and Justin out?

No...and that's why we don't want to lose his redshirt in the Alamo Bowl. I think Todd is our QB in 2007 season (man that seems far away.) What I think will happen is that it's likely Todd will become the #2 guy. I think with what has happened with Troy, and the struggles that Zwick has had, one of those guys is going to either transfer or just drop down the depth chart. I think Zwick's performance this week will tell a lot more. I could see Todd being a backup, and getting some PT because of an injury next year. The only way I can think he gets to start next year is if this happens:

Justin Zwick is horrible in the Alamo Bowl. He seems to lose all confidence in himself while Boeckman continues to grow and look more and more impressive. Troy Smith's problems with the NCAA cause him to not be able to be a part of the team next year.

If all those things happen, then I think Todd could start. Otherwise, I don't think it's going to be his job. It's tough to beat out TWO guys who have a year under their belt...especially Troy who, even though this booster stuff has happened, still turned the whole season around.

My real guess is that next year Troy starts, and Boeckman backs him up. I can't see Zwick as tOSU's QB. But I hope he plays well in the Alamo Bowl and proves me wrong, because I'd really like to see Zwick suceed. He deserves it, he's a good kid and a hard worker and so much was expected out of him it was almost unfair.

REFUTED: Boeckman to start Miami and Texas

A little birdy with direct connections to a former player who works in the athletic department says Boeckman will start against both Miami, Oh and Texas.

Isn't another of the issues with TS that tOSU is on quarters? I doubt Texas is, so VY should be fine in that matter. I honestly hope that he is ok, cause just like Kansas St. the last thing I want is a situation where "well, if Vince wasn't suspended"... lets just kick thier ass with him and put to rest any and all doubts.

As for this rumor and back on topic, this is somewhat of a shock to me. I know that Boeckman has looked very good, and looked ok in the Spring Game, but as far as I have been able to tell, he hasn't looked significantly better than JZ or TS (if TS is ok for Texas). That said, I don't see him in practice every day.

I don't know how TB or JZ have looked in practice, but I can tell you that I've personally seen both of them interacting with a few of the teammates. TB seemed to be a lot more well-liked by his teammates than JZ was; at least that was the impression that I got.

That is pretty damn surprising. I know he is doing well, but I thought there were some comments about him still looking like he wasn't quite ready after the spring practices.

By the way, when does practice start?

What's the deal with JZ not being well-liked?

I seem to remember him being a catalyst for the '02 recruiting class b/c of his leadership and personality.

I'm all for the best player getting the nod (TS or JZ or TB)...but nothing beats experience, and I would hate to break in a new QB against Texas.

Well, the night I saw them, JZ was left kind of off on his own, while the rest of the guys (Gonzalez, Schnittker, Hoewisher, Mangold & Carpenter) hung around with TB. I guess I look at it this way: For whatever reason, it seems like the guys play harder for TS than they did for JZ. Perhaps that could be a result of them having more respect for TS (and maybe TB), perhaps it's something else, and perhaps it's all in my head. Just an observation I made that I wanted to share. Take it for what it's worth......

I would not be shocked one bit if Boeckman gets the nod for the opener. JT has been quoted stating that TB has excellent field vision. Don't forget that he is the son of a coach, that is a huge plus in development. If we can throw together a solid O line, it shouldn't matter who the QB is.......as long as he can get the ball to the receiver........TB seems to be a very good candidate in my opinion.
