QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

I love the confidence and I really hope he puts his best foot forward and if he wins the job then good on him.

However this is a little aggressive and hopefully if Fields comes here Tate can back off a bit.

Tate is the one who orchestrated the hand shake snub in HS so he has a definate mean streak in him thats for sure.

I take this talk as a way to scare Fields somewhere else.

Exactly why I'm worried about this getting ugly. No doubt this will bring a bunch of negative recruiting that Day isn't loyal to guys on the team. It's one thing if you are Meyer or Saban and have proved to be elite coaches but Day hasn't proved enough to go out and get a negative reputation off the bat.
Martell isn't Day's guy, he's Urban's guy FWIW.

Tate and Justin are unlikely to be teammates. If Tate wins the battle, I'm not sure I see Justin staying. If Justin wins, Tate is definitely not staying (and may be eligible to play right away depending on credits).

Better to keep it in house? Sure, but until he's actually a teammate, it's hard to find too much fault with Tate for being a bit harsh towards a undecided mercenary gunning for his job. Both should be alphas. Once he gets here, if the public chatter dies down, and they both compete, that should be a workable situation

It comes off more insecure than alpha imo.
I suppose same could be said of Baker Mayfield, but it makes me raise an eyebrow and suspect Tate is scared of the competition.

I think a lot of this is overblown.

From lettermans row

“Whoever is going to come in, we’re going to need to grab somebody regardless,” Martell said. “I mean, right now it’s me, Matthew Baldwin and [Chris Chugunov] — who knows how the quarterback room is going to play out, but you have to have four quarterbacks as it is. Somebody has to come in.”

The most obvious pick to fill that spot right now is Justin Fields. The belief by many is that if Fields does choose Ohio State, he’ll be handed the keys to the offense — and that’s what led to Martell’s candid interview on Sunday morning. The redshirt freshman quarterback wants people to understand it’s not that easy to just stroll into a place like Ohio State and win a job

“It’s going to take a while to learn the offense. I’m just telling you, it’s not easy,” Martell said. “It doesn’t matter where you came from or what you’ve done. Coach [Ryan] Day brings an NFL-type of playbook to our offense, and it’s difficult. It’s not going to be something that you can just walk in and three months in during spring ball you think you’re rolling.

“It’s not that easy, I promise you.”

Sounds like a guy who knows that 4 QB's is what's best for the team and the best player will play. He isn't making it up when he points out that it won't be easy for someone to walk in fresh and start.

That's a much more balanced and nuanced statement... maybe it's just media shit stirring or nature of twitter.

That sounded much more like a guy who's ready to lead. I'll take that.

Not mentioned enough.

There were two primary recruiters from Ohio State to Bishop Gorman: Zach Smith and Tim Beck. There was one on-campus host for every visit Martell made: JT Barrett. Martell committed to Ohio State to throw passes to Grimes and Lindsey; neither of them are here.

I think Tate could do great things under Ryan Day. He had outperformed Tua Tagovailoa, Myles Brennan, Sam Ehlinger, Jake Fromm, and Dylan McCaffrey after two days at the Elite 11 Finals in 2016.

All that said, he came to Ohio State to run the Urban Meyer offense like JT Barrett but with a better arm. Nobody he committed to remains in the program other than his classmates and the institution that is Ohio State.

Is that enough? I honestly don't know...

Disagree. He came to throw passes to WRs who signed up as Buckeyes. In the climate of CFB he of all people know how quickly kids can transfer, commit, decommit and go to other schools. Grimes and Lindsey were irrelevant, he wanted to be a Buckeye and he knew that itd be a battle to ever start here. Heck, there was a time where many thought hed never start and that Emory Jones would immediately take the roll next season(fans are fickle). Day is a chip kelly disciple its foolish that people keep thinking that his offense is only for pocket passers when the offenses that Kelly ran, were developed for dual threat QBs, and good coaches can transform their playbook based on the QB, hence the offense looking different for Haskins than JT. Day can switch back to RPO principles since he has that experience in his pocket too for Tate(and possibly Fields). But to assume that Tate would only be successful in an Urban Meyer offense where the QB is depended on to run so much, is a little asinine, imo. Good-great coaches know how to change their playbook depending on the talent that they have

Marcus Mariota:
I think everyone is jumping the gun here in deciding that Fields would be an automatic starter. This talk is also doing a little bit of a disservice to Tate and Baldwin. I haven't seen anything that shows that Tate isn't good enough to be the starter come next year whether or not Fields comes here. If Fields does come I expect that he would have to win the job just like anyone else. I also believe that he would have to beat out Martell for the job, and Baldwin too.
He couldn't win the starting job in Ga.
Go Bucks!

Not to mention Fields having to come in and learn a new playbook, and get familiar with new WRs and RBs. I read on 11W that it takes QBs 1-2yrs to get the playbook down, and comfortable and that was difference in Haskins last year to this year. I believe the same maturation will go on with Martell
