QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

I wouldn't want him to back down from the competition. He will have 2+ years of experience in the offense and the staff know who he is. Troy Smith wasn't the higher rated prospect over Zwich and he end up winning the Heisman.

Have the two of the compete. I think Tate Martell knows he has to improve his throwing to ever have a chance at the NFL. Transferring would be short sighted, let Day continue to develop him and at worse he goes the route of Burrow as a graduate transfer if he never wins the starting job at Ohio state. I'm not sure he can go to a program that will develop him as a QB as good as Day can.

I suspect that the bravado is as much his personality as anything. A confident kid reacting to a lot of people getting excited about something new and shiny. If the most popular guy on campus is the backup QB, imagine how popular the backup QB who isn’t even in the program.

I think you’re right in your assessment though. Few better places to be than under Day.

I thought his posting about the issue was a little sophomoric and completely unnecessary, but I read several of the latest articles quoting his responses about Fields and starting at tOSU and I don't see anything wrong with what he's said. He's right, he's been in the system for two years and knows how to run the offense and he doesn't appear to be whining that he's owed the start because he's put in his time. Rather, he's saying that competition or not, he's the guy because he's the best guy. No issue there.

“Why would I leave for somebody who hasn’t put a single second into this program yet?” he said. “I’ve put two years of working my ass off into something that I’ve been praying for and dreaming of my whole life. To just run from somebody that hasn’t put a single second into workouts or anything like that and doesn’t know what the program is all about, there’s not a chance.”

Tate was a highly rated recruit too. By all means, throw down the gauntlet.

QBs gotta be alpha dogs. I'm fine with it.
It's one thing to quietly fight for the job. It's another to continually run your mouth about it and risk dividing the lockeroom for their guys. JT and Cardale the Situation doesn't appear to be unless they become friends if he gets here.

Alpha dog is one thing, immaturity is another. Someone said it best a few pages ago (too lazy to look back): OSU has given Tate an opportunity to compete for the starting job. They owe him nothing more and nothing less.

Just say that you are confident in your ability and have a firm grasp of the system and we'll see how things shake out. That's the mature way to handle it. The twitter route and all the other comments are not necessary, especially if he does end up as your future teammate.

This isn't fighting for the starting job in spring training. He's fighting for his starting job with twitter rumors in December and January.

This isn't the same as sacking up in spring ball and leaving it all on the field. He's telling people he's not rolling over. Again. I'm fine with it. He's a competitor. This is who Urban Meyer recruited.

In Tate's defense, I am sure every time he tries to take a leak or turns around there is a mic in his face with some McShitstain wanna be asking him if he is transferring because of Fields. He is most likely tired of it. Should he keep his mouth shut, maybe, but I am sure that is all he is getting asked and he probably has kept his mouth shut for about as long as he could take it evidently. I know how these media shartheads can be, I am sure he is getting battered with it.
