QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

He was 23 of 28 on the season and 10 for 10 vs Rutgers. That is "always trying to hit the homreun instead of taking what is there"?

Might want to re-watch.

For the most part I think he was fine. Against Tulane, I remember some pretty poor play in the 2nd half, but that's not a big deal. My main concern with Tate was him being 200lb and Urban running him too much. With Day that's diminished.

Tate has a good arm, better that JTs, so he can definitely operate the system Day has and will probably do a pretty good job. The question is, if Fields commits, can he come in and live up to the hype as a Haskins level talent.

Not sure why he would.

If Fields come in, and doesn't win the job, you see him transferring again?

It will be talked about as an open competition, but if Day brings Fields in... i think the conclusion is known. Not unlike this year with Haskins vs Burrow.
It'd be Fields job to lose, and i doubt he blinks.
We can win with either guy... but it does nothing for our numbers. The likelihood of keeping both is slim to none.

I feel that this could get ugly

I wouldn't want him to back down from the competition. He will have 2+ years of experience in the offense and the staff know who he is. Troy Smith wasn't the higher rated prospect over Zwich and he end up winning the Heisman.

Have the two of the compete. I think Tate Martell knows he has to improve his throwing to ever have a chance at the NFL. Transferring would be short sighted, let Day continue to develop him and at worse he goes the route of Burrow as a graduate transfer if he never wins the starting job at Ohio state. I'm not sure he can go to a program that will develop him as a QB as good as Day can.

Exactly.

What else would you want a competitor to say?

Fields hasn't proven anything more than Martell has so mentioning that isn't a shot at Fields.

As far as the divided locker room angle, the culture at OSU is best player plays. If a big time talent falls in your lap you take him and make him earn a spot like anyone else. It only helps the team be better and that is the cold hard truth of life in a results based organization.

I think Urban and coach Mick have built that culture to the point where this type of thing won't be an issue if the kid comes in and earns his stripes.

Also I'm not sure why he would transfer in 2019 even if he lost the job. He would have to sit with a new team and who know what could happen in that time period. Might as well be able to play and sit on the Ohio State bench for the year, just in case something happens. Get those college credits to graduate so he can be a graduate transfer and not have to sit a year.

TATE MARTELL SAYS HE WILL NOT TRANSFER: “I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT I'LL GO OUT THERE AND WIN THE JOB”

Tate Martell says he’s not going anywhere.

Ever since the redshirt freshman quarterback stepped foot on Ohio State’s campus, rumors of his transfer have swirled, and they haven’t stopped. With Dwayne Haskins likely to leave for the NFL draft, the starting quarterback spot will open, and Martell will be among those competing to win the job.

However, Ohio State is expected to add another quarterback before next season and reportedly has interest in Georgia’s Justin Fields as a transfer. Even if Ryan Day lands Fields, the No. 2-ranked prospect in the 2018 recruiting cycle, Martell said he will not transfer out of Ohio State. If Haskins heads to the NFL, he expects to start next fall.

“I have no doubt that I'll go out there and win the job,” Martell said on Sunday at Rose Bowl media day.

After spending two years preparing to be Ohio State’s quarterback, Martell said he doesn’t see why he would leave.

“There's no reason I should,” Martell said. “I know what kind of quarterback I am. I'm an elite quarterback. I know that after two years of being here, I run our offense at a very efficient level, and I know once we put the zone read back in, it will be very fun for me.”

The possible addition of Fields, who would have to apply to the NCAA for a hardship waiver to be eligible to play immediately as a transfer, would cloud Martell’s future at Ohio State. He’s a talented passer who was viewed by many people as the top-rated dual-threat quarterback in his class.

However, Martell doesn’t see why he would leave simply due to Fields ending up at Ohio State.

“There's no reason I shouldn't (stay),” Martell said on Sunday. “This dude hasn't put a single second into Ohio State football. I don't know why somebody would think that the grass is greener on the other side, but I guess he's kind of looking at it like a fantasy way, I guess.”

Urban Meyer recruited and landed Martell, who has shown his elusive running ability since arriving at Ohio State. He has succeeded with dual-threat quarterbacks with similar skill sets to Martell's.

Martell said he is not worried about not fitting into Day’s offense, since Day has worked with similar quarterbacks.

“Coach Day, he does a good job of work with whatever he has,” Martell said. “Like I've said before, he worked under coach (Dana) Bible and coach Chip Kelly, learned all that stuff from them. And they've always used dual-threat guys. He's worked with guys that can run the ball, so he knows what to do when he's out there. He's going to give us the best chance to go out there and win games.”

I'm all for confidence. But the subtweets, the straight up quotes like this:

..I could definitely do without. Maybe if Fields does come he'll rein in the talk and put the focus on the field and not divide the locker room, but I kind of doubt it. Those kind of comments made publicly strike me as coming from someone comfortable putting himself above the program. No doubt Haskins and Burrow both wanted to be the guy and said as much and competed fiercely, but you didn't have this kind of talk that quickly becomes toxic. Also not exactly a strong demonstration of maturity when that's definitely a trait the coaches are evaluating you on..

Exactly why I'm worried about this getting ugly. No doubt this will bring a bunch of negative recruiting that Day isn't loyal to guys on the team. It's one thing if you are Meyer or Saban and have proved to be elite coaches but Day hasn't proved enough to go out and get a negative reputation off the bat.
