QB Tathan Martell (transfer to Miami, transfer to UNLV)

Tate is fiery. He’s a competitor. He seems to have worked hard by all accounts.

But at the end of the day he is largely an unproven talent. If I’m Day, I am pretty damn worried about the depth of my QB room. Is he the front runner at this point? Yeah sure. By default.

He could be a future Heisman and NC winner but he has to earn it and not just be the defacto replacement. That is true regardless of who is coming in.

He needs to worry about what he can control and lay off the Twitter warrior crap. He’s got to prove a whole lot on and off the field.

Just because you’ve turned 16 doesn’t mean you get the keys to the Porsche.
You do realize these were the same exact words said by the fanbase this time last year? Haskins had earned nothing coming into this season, became a front runner by default when Burrow transferred out. Earned the job in practice but we still had seen just as much of him in games as we had of Martell this year, and still a contingency of the fan base preferred Burrow. All of your post can be applied to Haskins as well, and it worked out.
I love the "twitter warrior crap", the fan base is clamoring for an unproven transfer to take over the offense, and Tate doesn't want to hear any of that nonsense. Talk that talk and back it up young man. Call your shot, that's what we want from our greats. Closed mouths don't get fed.

Oh I’m sorry, I guess I missed Tate stepping in The Game while trailing and lead his team to victory? And I guess I missed Dwayne the twitter warrior.

Funny thing is, even after leading OSU to victory against scUM many fans still wanted Burrow. I think you're also forgetting fans bashing Haskins for his suspect play in the Illinois game as well. And though Dwayne himself wasn't tweeting many many fans, recruits, alum and teammates called for Barrett to be benched in his favor. No problem with Tate having confidence in his own abilities, I think any fan would want that in their starting QB.

The point is, Dwayne had more competition for the job, proved more as a back up and was less cocky about his “due and proper” than Tate. Dwayne had to beat out a starting SEC quarterback for the job, a local kid with special powers who was Mr Ohio football. Tate has done virtually nothing at this point. I just worry that his not-so-cryptic tweet shows a lack of maturity and seems to point to him being owed something. This thread is riddled with “I would hate to see Tate transfer” talk which I find completely ridiculous. The depth at the position is frightening right now. And frankly, if you want to take the reigns at The Ohio State you better damn well earn it, I don’t care who you are.

Exactly why you take a player like Fields.. not to mention you will have him for 2 for sure years if he comes here.

You're reading way too much into this. Just because his personality is different than Dwayne's doesn't mean he doesn't work his ass off. Pretty sure he's aware he has to earn it and from the player interviews I've seen, he's earned a lot of respect from his teammates already. Baker Mayfield is a major league douchebag, but he's a hell of a player. You can win with both types of people. Tate talks a lot, but that doesn't necessarily mean he feels entitled.

According to Day and Urban, Tate works his ass off, has improved tremendously, and has done everything that has been asked of him for two years. He has been a good teammate and a good backup. He did complete 23 or 28 passes last season albeit against puds, but he showed he has ability. We also saw him flash in the spring game. Fields has proven less than Tate has so far in his collegiate career.

Do you not think that Urban, Day and Wilson knew of the cockiness of Tate when they recruited him? Like @Hstead and @OregonBuckeye said, being confident doesn’t mean he doesn’t work hard. He’s always been confident and straddling the line of cocky, but I haven’t heard of one teammate saying anything negative about him. Kid is every bit the baller that Fields is. If you’re going to be QB1 at a school like OSU you are going to have some level of cockiness, whether you post on social media or do it on campus and fans on message boards don’t know it. And whether you want to believe it or not, Haskins was known to be quite the cocky kid in the locker rooms, it’s not a negative thing.

Tate has been a winner and according to coaches has worked hard since being at OSU. With Fields, I welcome the addition and look forward to a solid competition with Baldwin. I’ll sleep comfortably knowing we have 3 guys capable of winning games and challenging each other. I don’t get paid enough to say who should be starting i’ll Leave that up to the guy making about 4-5 MIL a year.

Actually, if you’ve paid your $79.99 fee here, I’m pretyy sure you are overqualified to say who should play.

Fields has played in twice as many games and thrown passes in 3Xs the games as Tate while being responsible for 8TDs to Tate’s 3. How has Tate proven more than Fields?

In my eyes, he has been with his same team for two years, has been patiently waiting his turn and been a good teammate. Has put in his time playing on the scout team last year.

Saying that Fields has "thrown passes in 3Xs as many games",seriously? So coming in to throw one pass in two game and two passes in two others is so much experience. WOW. If you want to try to argue that Fields has 3Xs more experience that Tate good luck. Just because he got in a couple of more blow outs to throw one or two passes and Uga used him as a runner a couple of times does not amount to a mole hill. I would take a kid that has competed in two more spring practice seasons any day of the week plus a bowl season of practice time. Tate has more hours of experience by any measure. Not to mention that Tate probably should have been used more this past season in packages. Also, Tate has better completion percentage in the throws each have made.

Fields was unable to prove he could wait his turn. Fields has not proven he can take a beating on scout team. To me, that is less than what Tate has proven regardless if Fields throw a pass in two more games.

And Joe Bauserman had more experience than Braxton Miller.

Truth is talent trumps all. Nothing against Tate. But if Fields is the better player, we are going to be damn lucky to have him.
