QB Quinn Ewers (transfer to Texas)

I’m with you. Frankly, I was more impressed with the QB of the other team.
I too didn’t see the zip on Ewer’s throws.

but all great QB have a common trait.....they throw with some zip. If I had meant to say he doesn’t have a cannon then I would have said that. Milton has a cannon but it doesn’t help him. Burrow didn’t have a cannon like DH but he was off the charts in so many variables.....but still had zip. I guess it’s a matter of interpretation.

Closest is Lawrence and I think Ewers could be better at this point. Dude is incredible, I see him competing for a starting job from day 1 even with our stacked QB room, he's that good. Might be the best HS QB prospect I've ever seen on film. Man did we hit a home run on this one.
Best HS QB ever!?! Sorry to sidetrack this thread, but Quinn is good but he may not even be the best HS QB in TX history: Vince Young and Kyler Murray are a thing of legend in Tejas. Not to mention what Terrelle Pryor, Tim Tebow,, DeShaun Watson, Matt Barkley and even Tate Martell did in HS.

I do like your assessment @bigdog3300 , but is it all a bit premature?

I think it's super misleading watching these highlights, but I can say as someone who has worked as a scout and for scouting services....

* Elite level footwork for his age, looks extremely comfortable and natural in the pocket, stays balanced consistently, looks the part
* Throws one of the most catchable balls you'll see in high school, makes it easy for his WR's and does this consistently
* Has one of the best deep ball's you will ever see scouting HS QB's. Fantastic deep ball accuracy and his launch angle is something you don't even see top level college QB's do. It makes it so rare to see DB's intercept or even get a hand on his deep balls. It drops in and when combined with his accuracy his deep ball already would be one of the dangerous traits in college football.
* Knows when to zip it and when not to - the arm strength question I'll also note below

Junior with loads of tape/experience, great technique and a natural athlete, etc.

This kid is going to put on weight, he has strong arm strength already but when you project a kid to college football you know certain things are going to improve naturally, like strength. When you have the fundamentals he already has, you can project out he'll have everything he needs in that category to do everything he wants to do. Will he be a guy like, say even Baker Mayfield, who can throw 70 yards? I have no idea. I also know that need may come up once in a career and I'm not going to sweat it.

Plays great comp with a very advanced system for HS, is able to progress through his reads, stays comfortable in the pocket, etc. etc.

From an on-field perspective, there is nothing this kid can't do. He has skills that already would be upper echelon in college today. He is going to continue and develop and that's why everyone is watering at the mouth thinking of him at 6'4/215.
Haha I'll kindly shut up... I will say though that a lot of his highlights are of him putting touch on the ball going down the field so it's tough to gauge when you're an amateur like myself.

Good breakdown though!!

can we all chill on a 16 maybe 17 year old kid? our QB coach and HC wanted him, so did most others in the country... let’s please not act like these kids coming out of high school are the 2nd coming of some abomination hybrid of Manning/Brady/Rodgers/Bress or which ever QBs you think are awesome... let’s let these kids be kids and appreciate whatever they turn into.

Young was a freak athlete who took awhile to turn into a viable throwing threat. Kyler was dynamic but didn't have such advanced throwing technique. I know it's a bold claim and we have to see how it plays out, but Ewers is out of this world talented and stacks up against any QB I've watched on film since I've followed recruiting. If you want zip, watch the first highlight in that last game where he throws a frozen rope on a 15 yard out route. I'll give everyone that a lot of his throws are touch passes but I think that's a product of his situational awareness and using touch in the right moments. I'm not donning Quinn as the next Peyton Manning, but he's extremely advanced in his technique and has every tool you want in an elite QB.

As a former college receiver, I notice Ewers has an uncanny ability to put the ball where the receivers like to catch it. “Zip” is not the be all end all. Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning don’t have rocket arms....I’d put this kid in their company as potentially what he could be...there is a reason-as an 8th grader- OSU felt this kid was the best potential QB at their summer camp.

This is what I see when I watch his film. Footwork is very hard to teach and a natural pocket presence / sense, as we see with Fields, is hugely important.

And while not football, in lacrosse it always amazes me how much we need to emphasize the idea of throwing a catchable ball. Understanding and executing high levels of touch when you hear the footsteps of someone coming to take your head off is a difficult skill to master. It takes an amazing amount of focus and practice to execute at that level.

I’m bullish on the kid. Frankly, way more bullish than the other kid who played in the catholic schools in the Chicago burbs. Those highlights against that competition are easy button material.

I'm in the minority here but watching his film vs the latest team I come away with... meh.

Not a great completion percentage and not great zip on the ball... just me but I'm not wow'd like burrows HS film.

But.... spoiler alert I'm not a scout of any kind.

He seems to have good touch on the ball but he doesn't have the laser throws we're use to.

I really like McCord and Stroud to start for the next 4 years.

I too didn’t see the zip on Ewer’s throws.

If it was all about how much "zip" a QB puts puts on the ball then Milton really would have won the Heisman. This kid has superb touch and can put zip on the ball when it calls for it I assure you that.

I finally have use for my Z.I.P. (Zesty Insane Power) chart. Please reference it below for all future arm strength debates.
