QB Matthew Baldwin (transfer to TCU)

A) I totally agree
B) I don't blame the kids at all

Now, that said, what do you do going forward? This is an extremely interesting situation when you think about all the dynamics at play. Some random thoughts;

  • Project players might stay but that isn't what you want from a back up.
  • The transfer portal is a total crap shoot every year. Hard to make it part of your plan.
  • Does this bring back the run first QB in college? (easier to learn the playbook)
  • Recruit your guy one year then take a grad transfer in alternate years (roughly)?
  • I saw Orr had a piece at the OZ proposing the native son of Ohio path (offer a MAC level kid to go along with "your guy")
  • Several issues with the feasibility of this primarily scholarship numbers and the fact we have already seen a walk on transfer to find a better depth chart situation
The constraints, as I see them, are most schools only want 4 scholarships going to QB and the ticking clock of 4 years of eligibility. The 4 years part is what kills the idea of a scrappy vet back up QB a la the NFL model.

How you get a kid to want to come and hold a clipboard for more than 1 year AND still be of use to your program is one hell of a conundrum.

(As I just posted in the transfer portal thread...)

Best case scenario to me is pitching a kid from the very beginning that they are on the Kenny Guiton path.

We will groom you to be a coach as you provide depth, and hell, maybe even win a few games, and you will have the support of Ohio State’s alumni network (football and otherwise) forever.

Easier to learn the playbook, and easier to get injured, also. That's risky, and if also isn't what Day wants to sell QBs and WRs.

Looking at grad transfers for QB depth makes sense, as they're backups with experience. Learning the system quickly is an issue so their former offense could affect how desirable they are.

Chug won't hurt you... he'll be steady... very cerebral... won't win you games but won't lose you games... won't make same mistake twice...
Once he gets timing down with Zone 6... he'll be OK

He's used to lightning WRs (elite speed WRs in HS) so he likes the deep ball.. jury is out a bit on short game.. tough as nails

I don’t fault the kid at all. He wasn’t going to beat out Fields unless Fields just completely shat the bed and he didn’t want to wait around for him to maybe get hurt. He waited in HS and got less recruiting attention than he would’ve otherwise, blew out a knee, and then had to rehab for a year-plus. He thinks, and he’s not wrong, that he’s good and wants to get out there and play. He was looking at two years behind Fields and having Miller breathing down his neck. Yes, we’re in a bit of a tight spot because of it, but we’ll be fine. Chugs 2020!

JMo but tOSU put itself into this position by taking transfer players and thus displaying a lack of confidence in the recruited players. In doing this the coaching staff more or less slapped the players in the face.
I think Baldwin went because he felt he didn't play well enough in the spring game to take the spot from Fields. They brought in 2 players even with Martell and Baldwin in the mix, so what is that saying to them?
This might even hurt them in future recruiting as it might make players rethink their playing chnaces. It will be interesting to see if Miller's recruitment holds up.

Ohio State has never been the place where high level QBs transfer into. I think you're right that Day disrupted that fragile balance of how the hierarchy of the QB succession plan was. It may have been an unspoken rule but I think everyone knew it.

No one got the starting job without earning it first. When a starter left, the next two guys were going to compete for the job. Braxton and TP didn't get the starting job until Bauserman and Boeckman faltered.

I think Tate and Baldwin knew they were going to compete. Tate probably felt he was going to win. Baldwin losing to someone he has been around and who has been in the system for years might have changed how he viewed it.

QUIET AND DELIBERATE. I thought nothing of Matthew Baldwin's absence from Ohio State's spring game interviews, but in hindsight, maybe I should have!

In a way, I respect the hell out of how Baldwin did this. There weren't really any swirling rumors, he went out of his way not to talk to reporters after the spring game, and he quickly confirmed the news when it broke with his own well-written statement.

He just came at us with it like a thief in the night.

Which is exactly how not to handle it.

Remember the Joe Burrow situation and how involved Meyer was in figuring out where Joe's head was and what the plan was moving forward? It seemed they were in constant communication that if he didn't win the job he would transfer. Both sides knew and OSU could make a plan moving forward.

Maybe Baldwin told Day that he was homesick or he was thinking about leaving but I get the impression that he kind of blindsided Day, which in my opinion isn't great.

I doubt it in this climate. With the transfer portal, if he lost the job to whomever he was leaving . Especially if it was to someone in his class or younger. I doubt CFB will next to any kids that were 4star rated or higher sitting thr bench anywhere more than 2 years

I would go with a top flight QB and then a MAC kid who loves tOSU. At least you have depth then.
