QB Luke Fahey (Official Thread)

The loss isnt on Fahey, he actually had a solid first start. But he got screwed by bad blocking and worse drops.
Watch his drops. I’m guessing because of his height, he has to drop back much further than ideal. This puts really bad tackles in really bad spots. Great QB’s climb the pocket. Neither he, nor Sayin climbs the pocket because they can’t see their receivers. They are going to have to retool the offense to give this guy a chance.

Scary part is they just had two weeks to tinker in the garage and this was the best retooling they could come up with.

OL, TE and RB are all just “meh”. It’s too much to overcome imo. You’d need a monster at QB, not an undersized freshman. Even then, I’m not so sure.

Special teams and defense are pretty full of “meh” as well.

Just watched Allen take the Bills right down the field with a quick sort/mid range passing attack.

This is what I expected the “retooling” to be. Get the ball out of your QBs hands and into your playmakers hands fast.
The problem with that is the D is already in the box due to trying to take away the run. So that won't be open till he consistently hits 15-20 yard throws.

It's the problem with Michigan's pass game for the last decade. If all you can do is throw short. It doesn't threaten the D when they are already in the box to stop your run

Before the 4th quarter, 65%+ of Ohio State's plays were runs. The game plan was obviously to run the ball, take a lead early, run the clock down and limit Fahey's opportunities to pass to avoid any mistakes costing us the game.

Which, obviously didn't happen. We went down two scores very fast and the game plan never changed. The defense bleeding points and continuing to run the ball 2/3 of the time meant Fahey had zero opportunity to win the game. When we finally started throwing the ball it was too late.

I thought it was common knowledge that with a new QB you want to throw on the early downs when it's more likely the defense will put guys in the box and play the run. That didn't happen either.

He had zero turnovers and was sacked twice. Which with this OL and being swarmed every down was a victory in itself.

His overthrows can be blamed on lack of experience/rapport with our receivers and maybe being amped up. All fixable. People bitched incessantly about Sayin under throwing the ball and can now complain about Fahey over throwing. So the cynical/doomsday crowd still has something to bitch about.

I thought he looked great considering all that was stacked against him Saturday.

I think leadership is the most important job of a QB (I'll take a Howard over a Stroud any day). He's good enough. So whether I'd prefer him as starter in his 2nd/3rd/4th season depends entirely on that. Not that my opinion means anything.

for a first time starter, I would say that was probably 85% of the max you could hope for, from a true frosh with zero starts, on the road, in the rain, against a very talented albeit inconsistent defense, with no confidence in the OL and teammates not executing or making mental mistakes in crunch time.

Conversely there are defenders where they were the polar opposite in terms of how much you could have hoped for vs what they delivered. And not just the usual suspects on D.

McClain and Little were way off their game, which was shocking. They aren't Caleb but they've been pretty good especially little. That was devastating for a team already missing their 3rd (or higher) best defender in timmons.
