QB Luke Fahey (Official Thread)

These next 4 games with the backup QB are not going to be a gimmie.

No remaining game will be but the next 4 are the road to one of the two B1G CG spots.

At this point, if we can still pull that off and get a playoff appearance I'd be impressed*.

*The Game is a season onto itself so not included in my comment.

Maybe look at Legend Bey?

Just sayin': I'd like to see a couple gadget plays with Legend Bay in the "wildcat". He runs left; and then on another play he starts to run right, draws the defense toward him, and throws a screen pass back to the left side, etc. I wouldn't necessarily trust him on any long bombs. However, he was an OK high school passer; so I think he could handle some quick short passes.

Google AI: Legend Bey played high school football as a dynamic dual-threat quarterback for North Forney High School in Forney, Texas, before moving on to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Career High School Football Totals (Varsity across 33 games, 2023–2026)
  • Passing: 234 completions on 466 attempts (50.2%), 3,783 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions (87.9 QB rating)
  • Rushing: 401 carries, 4,365 yards, 10.9 yards per carry, and 64 touchdowns
  • Receiving: 4 receptions for 33 yards
  • Total Yards: 8,181 total yards (247.9 yards per game) with 4,423 all-purpose yards and 102 total touchdowns
I'm a big fan of Fahey. I think he's a baller and will look wayyyy better after 2 weeks of #1 reps. I don't put any stock into that IU game

Just sayin': He has to only because he couldn't look any worse. Against Indiana he looked like the proverbial "deer in the headlights". Even one of the announcers said that.

I'm sure after 2 weeks of preparation he'll do a lot better. If he plays within his limitations and doesn't make any mistakes (i.e. take care of the ball); I believe he should be fine. He needs to just be a facilitator and put the team in a position win by just distributing the ball to the "playmakers" and let them do their thing. Will he play good enough to win the game? We'll just have to wait and see. The big make or break question for the Buckeye offensive here will be: How good does the OL play?

Let me ask you guys. If you saw someone pissed his pants when suddenly facing a grizzly in the woods, but managed to weather the storm and got out unharmed, would you laugh at this guy?

I was encouraged by Fahey's run and the two throws to the ground (not sure why he was asked to throw in that situation, but I won't pretend to know better than Day and Smith). Two weeks later, the pants will be dry again, and he will be fine. Fine may not be enough for our looneys. But that's for another day.

Am I the guy he shot in the leg so he could survive the attack in this story?

My answer depends a lot on that.

Luke Fahey's scramble encouraged me. He slid like a veteran. Throwing it to the ground showed he knew to play it safe.

I know it doesn't mean much. But it seems he understands the game situation and his own limitations. He won't be Sayin in two weeks, but I think he would be ready. Time for the running game to step up.
Yeah, the running game is going to be key in moving forward. BO and West can get the job done as long as the OL steps it up.

EVALUATED 06/29/2025

Greg Biggins

Greg BigginsNATIONAL RECRUITING ANALYST

Fahey is one of the most talented quarterbacks out West. He’s surgical from the pocket and can pick a defense a part with his accuracy and timing. Shows off a quick release, throws one of the tighter balls in the region and processes the game extremely quick. In terms of his ability to get through his progressions and reads, he’s one of the more advanced signal callers in the country. An extremely smart player with a high football IQ, knows where to go with the ball, doesn’t turn it over and will still take his shots down the field. Is accurate to all three levels of the field, changes speeds well and knows when to take a little off and when to add some heat when the windows are tight. A tough kid with a lacrosse background and isn’t afraid to take a shot in the pocket or run though a defender to pick up a few extra yards. At 6-0, he’s not a big quarterback but has a solid frame, a strong lower body and should have no problems holding up against the hits he’ll have to take in college. Checks off the leadership box as well, has always had a clutch gene and is the guy you want in your huddle late in a game when you need a late game score. Projects as a multi-year starter at the high Power 4 level and it won't surprise if he sees the field early in his college career as well.

You're not sure why a QB was asked to throw? The football?

I think it's a fair question and I said something similar in the game thread. Given what the OL was doing (obviously not blocking) and how lost Fahey looked on the first possession, I was baffled at what the coaches were seeing that they though having him drop back to pass on an obvious passing down like 2nd and 9 was a good idea. Especially given the score/time on the clock. I can almost understand the screen call on 3rd down, but even then -- it's 3rd and 24 -- that play is far more likely to result in a bad play (sack, penalty, interception, incompletion) than in a first down. Run the ball, take 40+ seconds off the clock, and hope your punter doesn't suck. Maybe the idea is the screen is lower risk of an incompletion and might get 15 yards that will help will field position for the punt? I don't know. I just didn't like it either pass play called there given how terrible the OL looked.

Of course, if they'd just run in it 3 times, everyone would be clamoring that Day was "playing to lose" because "Fahey has looked good this season, let him throw", so he's going to take shit no matter what.
