QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

There are lots of ways to let someone go. The most efficient way is a player who makes extreme take-it-or-leave-it negotiating positions that you can decline. The McCords seem to think Kyle is a far better player than I. Perhaps they are right. Regardless of who is right, he has diminished himself going to Syracuse.

There’s some interesting backstory/layers here…Day essentially neutered Kyle’s ability to earn significant NIL $$$ when he wouldn’t commit to McCord as the starting QB next year.

This off-season was supposed to be his big payday. When Day told the press it was essentially going to be an open competition again, the McCord’s lost their shit bc they assumed not only had Kyle done enough to win the job, but that he was about to get set up with significant NIL $$$ as the returning OSU starter. Keep in mind, NIL deals are not sophisticated enough, at this point, to include clauses like Playing Time, Performance bonuses, etc….so no business or collective is going to reach a six figure endorsement deal with a guy the Head Coach is clearly not committing to in 2024.

They asked for a meeting with Day and Day held his ground.

I don’t wish ill on Kyle or his family, but I’m excited about what next year will look like and I’m happy Day stuck to his guns. I know Day gets a lotta shit for Parker Fleming, but I truly feel like Day makes bold moves when he has to….

While Day should get credit, he also waits until it’s painfully obvious.

This 1000%. While us more altruistic fans want to see Kyle compete and frankly that would include me, I am glad Day held his position and wouldn't guarantee anything. I hope he does well at Syracuse and moving forward, but I don't think this was a great decision in terms of timing and a huge downgrade of a football team. My thought would be process the fact that you are not guaranteed the spot next year, play like hell in the bowl game to assert your argument that you are the starter, and then make the decision on entering the portal after the game. But not my decision and more may have been involved, so good luck to McCord at Syracuse and hopefully Brown shines with the reigns fully in his hands.

Yeah my idea would be compete through spring and make the decision then.

But I get why he would want spring with the team he was going to vs having to win the job and learn everything in summer and fall camp

McCord will make a million $ for playing 1 year at Syracuse (significantly more than I made in any year). All of the rumors said he would have made less than that if he had stayed at tOSU. IF he saves and invests the majority of that wisely it should have a great impact on his financial future. Based on my observations, I doubt he will become an NFL QB. On the surface, that would seem to be an excellent business decision.
Was it an excellent life decision? That remains to be seen.
Best of luck to him. I believe he gave it his best shot while at tOSU.

I need someone to explain to me how NIL works in terms of ROI. Are people really making money off giving a guy like McCord a million?

The athletic departments indirectly work with collectives that are essentially “approved”.

Those collectives are littered with local businesses/business-people that provide the economic opportunity for an athlete to make money.

I doubt McCord is getting $1M but whatever the amount is, the value is ultimately for the athletic department. Assume Syracuse is significantly better next year and generate more ticket revenue, concession sales, merchandise, etc, it has a trickle effect across all sports since football supports it….

That’s kinda the gist of it…..it’s basically a way for people with a lot of disposable income to blow on their favorite programs.
