QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

The shot to Stover down the middle was money, as was the TD to Marvin that got called back. You take away the pick and put that TD on the board and there’s a lot less teeth nashing

The best throw of the day, IMO, was the throw to Fleming in between zone coverage. Hell of a throw.

It’s at the 5:00 mark in the above video.

Not mine I think McCord will be fine, without the pick even twitterverse would be quiet.
The pick didnt matter really. It was 4th down and the play got blown up - illegally I might add by the corner but I digress. He had to take a shot even though that direction is never really the right one. If it were a first down drive killer I could see a difference but it shouldn't even count as an INT really but a turnover on downs imo.

There is one throw though that I keep going back to in my mind, I'm hoping there's a wider view of it somewhere. But redzone against, zero? cover 1 low hole? Either way it was a middle field open against man with Marv running the drag and then the race or dig behind it? I can't remember who it was though as the #2, either Cade or Royer? TE, a big body #2 against a safety in man was the correct read when winning the inside leverage. Kyle fell off of it and onto Marv on the drag far too quickly IMHO. Not that giving MHJ his targets and looking his way is a bad thing, it almost never is. But coverage tends to dictate where the ball should be going. I can't help but feel a QB worried about taking a chance on a depth target in favorite of your clear cut #1 is also a 'scared' thing. Scared to make a mistake because you aren't the entrenched starter. Looking over your shoulder, so-to-speak. Which is why I'll always be bullish on the 1a-1b snaps

When you're a QB without a dominant connection to a high volume target, and viewed more of a distributor like a point guard, then I need you to space the floor evenly and be willing to take those shots to deeper targets. Spread the love and the ball around.

Despite some of my comments on Kyle's throwing motion, he still has enough on it to push the ball vertically and to the numbers without too much issue. But his placement will still need to be under continuous improvement.

I see a lot to like here.

His throwing motion is a little clunky, but I like Kyle. He hasn’t even shown his teeth yet.

Watched that and it gave me more confidence. He had a few bad decisions in there and a couple of bad throws. The bad decisions reminded me of stroud, when I was floored when he threw it into triple coverage so much last year. McCord isn’t at strouds level right now.

I actually think the receiver play was below average. They didn’t fight to get open, didn’t fight for extra yards, no great effort on contested balls. There were some balls there that would have been caught last year. Maybe 10 months of being called the best receiver room in the country got them complacent when the game finally started.

So my thought is McCord will keep getting better and the receivers will get back to 2022 levels.

When that play blew up McCord just tried to get rid of the ball. He wasn’t in immediate risk of being tackled and could have danced around a little more. It’s his first start as the leader of this team and a learning moment.

One throw that went under the radar because it was only ~6 yard completion early in the game was when he threw a dart to the far sideline off platform. It was a spiral on the money with some zip on it as he was rolling to his left without having his feet set. That was his best throw of the day as far as pure arm talent goes imo
LOL I was laughing in the game thread because some knucklehead said "I don't like McCords footwork" after that play! SMH
