QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

I just watched that McCord video and I counted only 4 of what I would call "bad" plays and one was the run wrong direction with another the INT on 4th down that wasn't really awful as a result. He also had 4 outstanding plays that give me a lot of hope and the rest were decent QB plays. The Oline in that video actually did a pretty good job giving him time to throw and the pocket was there most of the time. He's going to be more than fine in my opinion and his comfort with Fleming and Stover is excellent right now. He has a lifetime comfort level with Harrison and to me it looked like he was almost purposely trying to find his other guys. He'll settle down and get his timing together and we'll start putting up points again. I'm positive that it's coming.

I actually think the receiver play was below average. They didn’t fight to get open, didn’t fight for extra yards, no great effort on contested balls. There were some balls there that would have been caught last year. Maybe 10 months of being called the best receiver room in the country got them complacent when the game finally started.
I find it hard to talk about the receiver play by just watching the TV coverage. I can't tell if plays are open downfield and he is opting to take the safer throw. Are they open enough to throw a 50/50 throw and let his receivers make a play. There was one to Harrison that he threw short and Harrison had to try to catch the ball through the defender. Was the playbook cut down to ease him into everything.

I think everything we saw can be fixed with experience. Some experience he could have gotten the past two years in garbage time instead of padding Stroud's numbers for the Heisman voters.

The line play also needs to improve to help him out.

Kyle McCord’s first start of the 2023 season was full of ups and downs, but the third-year Buckeye still had a number of good throws in Bloomington Saturday afternoon.

The throw-by-throw breakdown of what happened on each of his 33 throws, in chronological order, with some GIFs and additional commentary mixed within:

  • Throw 1, 9-yard completion: McCord connects with his former high school teammate Harrison for an easy nine-yard throw.
  • Throw 2, 9-yard completion: Another easy pitch-and-catch, this time to Stover.
  • Throw 3, Incomplete: Play action – McCord moves up in the pocket and uses a sidearm throw to TreVeyon Henderson in the flat but is off target.

  • Throw 4, 10-yard completion: Play action – On fourth-and-2, McCord throws to a wide-open Gee Scott Jr. in the flat and the tight end runs for an easy first down (and more).
  • Throw 5, Incomplete: Play action – McCord overthrows Fleming down the field, missing a wide-open Harrison on the near sideline about 20 yards down the field.

The throw to Fleming that was missed didnt have Harrison "wide open". He was open, he always is basically, but his man dropped off to Fleming when McCord threw it which made it look like Harrison was uncovered, wide open. I just had to clear that up because it made me twitch.

My issue with Mccord isn't the errant throws or the int (which actually wasn't such a terrible desicion as it was on 4th down...ended up being the same result as an incompletion). CJ had nerves his first opener and airballed everything for a half. That's not nessassarily a huge red flag. The issue is Mccord doesn't go through progressions...at all. Not one single time in 33 plays. He stares down the 1st receiver and either forces it, or goes to the check down.

The best throw of the day, IMO, was the throw to Fleming in between zone coverage. Hell of a throw.

It’s at the 5:00 mark in the above video.

Looking at the wider shot, he was late to recognize Fleming being open.

What i see is a ton of high-low reads. Think i saw 2 plays where he looked at the other side of the field.
This is what i expect from a fresh QB whose mostly been given garbage time handoff reps.
Some of that is also the passpro.
He's alright on those 2-read progressions. Efficient and good throws. So room to improve, and solid baseline to start from.

I also like the decision to go for the TD throw to Flemming instead of the shorter throw to Marv......in that scenario. There are times when you would like the QB to just take the yards. I just liked the decision to go Flemming's way. He also had Marv open on basically the same play for Stover's long catch, and again picked Stover. At some point we'll need to see that he's making a decision there instead of just throwing dragons, but in this game I thought both were good ideas.

It's almost like playing QB is hard.
