You always hear that defense wins championships. There?s a good chance no one will be saying that Monday night after the BCS Championship game. Is this the signal of a sea change in college football?

The last few years we?ve seen these offenses with the ability to spread people out and score points during the regular season be a big storyline. I remember Brent (Musburger) and I called the Florida-Oklahoma game on radio ... and if you looked at those two offenses coming into that game, that?s all we heard about. And yet that game, the defenses actually showed up and played very well. So as much as (Auburn and Oregon) have been about offense for the whole year, I wouldn?t be surprised if the two defenses maybe played better than maybe people are anticipating. I think the reason we?re seeing all these offenses carry teams to championship-caliber games is just because of the mixture of the tempo and the spread and the way these teams can score. There?s more emphasis today on speed in offense than there?s ever been before.
Is there any chance you would vote TCU ahead of the loser of the championship game?
Depending on how the game goes, I was left with enough of an impression from Andy Dalton and Gary Patterson and that team ... that I would look at them and even Stanford. With the way Stanford finished the year, I think they deserve some consideration. If it?s a blowout, then there?s no doubt TCU and Stanford would be two teams that you have to consider moving up.
Does the scandal that?s happened in college football this season, especially with the Cam Newton situation, stain the sport?
I wouldn?t necessarily point to just the Cam Newton scenario and say, ?Boy, we?re definitely taking some steps back.? I would look at the entire season. I would look before the season before we ever kicked the ball in the air and what went on at North Carolina and South Carolina and a handful of schools in the SEC. Then it continued on with Cam Newton?s situation. Then even with Ohio State and the five players that they?ve suspended for next year. I know there?s a lot of pressure to win. I know that every fan base and every head coach out there feels the pressure to get to 11 or 12 wins and try to get to a BCS bowl game. But at the same time, I think there?s a way to go about doing that.
