Here's a more likely scenario.

ESPiN canonized Pope Urban a long time ago. Now, if this rumor is true, they are coming to terms with the fact that Pope Urban--and they have invested a lot of ink in that storyline--may leave the DeathStar and join the good guys.

This is a PR disaster. The ESPiN playbook is simple. Ohio State is the center of all evil. Urban Meyer is perhaps the greatest coach in college football except for his health problems. The SEC is where all great coaches want to be and the B1G is slow, plodding and undesirable.

So, let's create the background story that fits our original story. Ohio State loves Herbie. Herbie really loves Ohio State but has been held out of the WHAC by the evil Vest and his men. Now, let's try to create the Herbie and UFM are like brothers story and that UFM really wanted him to coach, and Herbie really wanted to do it, but he's created such a career for himself as a sports analyst. So, don't worry, he'll be right in the locker room now sharing his wisdom with UFM, who will wait with baited breath for every utterance.

It has several practical advantages. Kicking Ohio State has had diminishing returns in terms of traffic and advertising revenue. "They're evil but the knight in shining armor will straighten things out," could be an interesting story.

UFM might bite and Herbie might finally be able to share "locker room insights" from Ohio State ("Uh, look Mark, UFM really believes that the secret to this one is that the team that scores the most points will win and Ohio State coaches have been trying to unpack that complexity all day.") Alternatively, it opens the world to other storylines that allow Ohio State to be rehabilitated in the ESPiN discourse.

If you can't believe that UFM would be considering Herbstreit in any coaching position, then this backstory is plausible.

Not discouting anything you're saying here, Steve, especially as it relates to the "playbook"

And I suppose it has little to do with the "character" Herbstreit plays for ESPN...

But, let's keep in mind, that after the trainwreck of a season that was 2004, and the continued fallout from the Maurice Clarett "situation"... and the availability of Meyer to go to ND or FL, Herbstreit was the one (this is when he was still on C-Bus radio regularly) that was publicizing, and to a great degree endorsing the idea, that some "Alumni" were pressuring the Administration to part ways with Tressel and jumping in the Meyer sweepstakes.

Long story short, the tanned one's obsession, such as it is with Meyer becoming tOSU's coach, as well as the beginning of well, what we see in this thread today. I don't have insight into the Herbstriet/Tressel relationship, but I think that deteriorated over the years as well, especially as far as access and what Alums were "ok" to have around the program. stay tuned, we'll see what happens next.

Yesterday on SC, they asked KH to make the case for Bama not to be in the NC game, and he wouldn't even attempt to make a case, suggesting that Bama not being there (despite, you know, the fact that LSU already proved themselves to be the better team) was beyond defensible.

What a joke. ESPN and its band of performers continue to masquerade as unbiased reporters while promoting their own agenda.

I guess we will. Herbstreit wanted badly to be seen as the one-time Ohio State legend. He threw his toys out of the cot when Ohio State refused to play his game and let him have special access.

I'm afraid that I just can't warm to the idea of Herbstreit anywhere around Ohio State anymore. I don't think people at Ohio State will either. So, Herbstreit may pitch and expect special treatment but I think the about face during the past week (about coaching) is telling us that the backstory has been blown.

No one turned on Herbstreit quickly either. He got a LOT of slack for years until he had just gone so far that lots of Ohio State fans couldn't take it. If Meyer allows him some kind of special access, I will be among alumni who write Gee to put an end to it.

Herbstreit claims that LSU and Alabama should meet in the NCG because they play defense. That's right. Defense. Okie State doesn't deserve to be there because "they rely on turnovers", according to Herbstreit. Well, gosh, Herbie, don't great defenses cause those turnovers?

Maybe it doesn't matter that the team was observing a death the day that they lost in Ames, Iowa. But, I need a bit stronger argument than Herbstreit's "eyeball test".

My memory is also pretty good. Ohio State was a disaster under Tressel, precisely because they relied on strong defense, according to Herbstreit.

Of course, I don't think for a moment that ESPiN might be trying to get three SEC teams in BCS bowls for the revenue. Or to keep two BCS teams out for the same reason. Nope.

For Herbstreit, it's about eyeballs. I hope the voter's in both polls disagree.
