QB Kirk ‘Nightmare On’ Herbstreit (Frosted Quips, Afraid of THE Lunatic Fringe)

I've been thinking about why Herbie had dropped us in the polls after a decent Sugar Bowl win. The only thing I can come up with is that he is making a statement about letting the suspended players participate in the game. I simply don't see any other rationale. Since I don't believe that he actually hates tOSU, I tend to think its his way of distancing himself from the whole episode. If that is indeed the case (ok, that's a big if), I find it to be an incredibly unprofessional move on his part.

What's the saying...Any press is good press...not sure if it's true but his thread sure is getting a lot of action.

I think buckeye nation should ignore Herbie until he makes the way of trevor alberts.

Go bucks!!!

How long is the Mark May thread now?

Buckeye nation as a whole doesn't know how to use the ignore feature.

I believe KH is more interested in building his brand than worrying about how that process is affecting his relationship with his alma mater. This past football season KH had a sponsored segment on the Paul Finebaum SEC-centric radio show and did radio spots for local Alabama businesses.

Despite my usual distaste for most things Bucknuts, I loved this piece by Ramzy on ElevenWarriors:

Herbie the Impaler

herbie-hogs.jpeg

Arkansas was a good team. Until Ohio State beat them.

[Ed: The following guest post was submitted by Ramzy Nasrallah. The fine folks at Bucknuts agreed to lend him out to us after we covered Dave Biddle's bail in New Orleans. What did Biddle do? He was nabbed for drinking a non-alcoholic beverage on Bourbon Street. Evidently that's a no-no down there.]

Remember when Kirk Herbstreit consistently brought value to your college football broadcasts? His delivery was just as crisp and articulate back then; his gelled-up tips were just as frosted and the custom suits were just as tailored. Jim Tressel's hair was still mostly brown and you couldn't get through an Ohio State game without hearing, again, about how the starting Buckeye quarterback was majoring in something called "molecular genetics." It all came to you in stunning, standard definition. Yeah, it's been that long.

During the 2004 season - still the only rebuilding year in the Tressel era that actually delivered rebuilding-type results - Herbstreit said on a live, national ESPN broadcast that if he had a son of college age, he would not send him to play at his alma mater in a Tressel offense. The Buckeyes were in the midst of a three-game losing streak and trying to figure out the whole Justin Zwick-or-Troy Smith situation, and one of its famous former quarterbacks in a highly visible position ignored that reality and instead chose to chastise his own school for having the audacity to rebuild...

[quote='BusNative;185964;3]Despite my usual distaste for most things Bucknuts, I loved this piece by Ramzy on ElevenWarriors:

Herbstreit?s decline following his famous 2004 declaration gained steam through the third quarter of the Alamo Bowl, during which ESPN famously devoted its broadcast burying the Ohio State football program as Herbstreit ? just as famously ? sat silently in the broadcast booth.

I followed the link that is contained within above:

http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/...e-football-espn-controversy-over-conduct.html

For those that have never read this before, I highly recommend reading the entire letter by Vern Mangold. Eye-opening to say the least.

Nonetheless, I found this which pertains to the clip above:

The pinnacle of the pillorying of OSU football by ESPN was the ensuing coverage of the 2004 Alamo Bowl played against Oklahoma State. Beginning with the opening theme of the broadcast, the incessant negative banter of the broadcasters and the seemingly endless array of graphics casting OSU in a bad light that were flashed at the viewers during the game, created a presentation that was, to many arms length observers, over the top. ESPN could hardly contain itself while repeating all of the sundry charges that OSU players have experienced over the past three years.

I, for the life of me, do not remember this. I know I watched the game; however, I must not have paid attention closely. Is there any way to see what sEcSPN did? And is it quite evident that Herbie sat quietly during it?

After reading the letter by Mr. Mangold, I truly have an even deeper disdain for sEcSPN. I regret that I give that organization any support by watching a single channel in their family.

I don't remember it either. Perhaps I was too busy reveling in Zwick, Ginn and Lydell Ross taking the Cowboys and their scUM dumpster coach behind the woodshed.

I remember it alright. It was very blatant. Even my relatives who are nd fans commented on how bad the broadcast was that night.

I have a couple of thoughts about ESPN playing up the off field transgressions. The program DID have a problem with them during JT's first few years. I think this was due to a combination of two things: some bad eggs that Cooper brought in to try and keep his job and JT just not being fully prepared with some of the duties involved in running a big time program.

To say that we didn't have off-field issues, classroom issues or a poor apr in the beginning is to bury one's head in the sand. Take it for what it's worth, but there were serious questions being raised in the corridors of power whether JT (NC or not) was right for the job. Needless to say, Geiger and Holbrook made the right decision in giving him time to put his stamp on the program. JT grew into the management aspects of running the program and the proof lies in the absence of Fulmer Cup points, increased grad rates, percentage of the team maintaining a 3.0 and--for the last two years--one of the top 10 aprs on the country.

So, ESPN wasn't completely groundless in hyping what was "wrong" at Ohio State. They may have been unfair and biased to hype it over problems at other programs (their beloved at the time USC springs immediately to mind). My problem with them is where the [censored] are the positive stories about the program (and JT) turning things around.

I may not expect this to come from [Mark May] or Craig James, but I certainly would expect Herbstreit to talk about this. The fact that not only does he not do so but seems to be almost looking to jump on the negative train at the slightest shred of evidence is unforgivable. I've never expected him to shill the program, but he could talk about the positives, particularly in light of espn's mid-decade hyping of everything that went wrong. That he won't means that Ken Doll is dead to me as a Buckeye, and using his kids as self-serving props when gameday is in Columbus does not negate his larger sins against the program and the university.

I particularly remember Mike Tirico straying from the broadcast (mid game) to go off on a five minute diatribe against tOSU. I've hated that lumpy bastard ever since.

That's interesting, because I remember very little of that telecast besides the second half rant. Ohio State was blowing Okla. St. out of the building, and so with the game all but decided early in the second half, the announcers launched into the attack. It was your basic blowout game move--cut away to video of the announcers in the booth carrying on a conversation, interrupted only by seconds here and there in which they'd cut back to video of the game just to show the current play, and then cut right back to video of the announcers in the booth, who basically continued their conversation without discussing at all what was going on on the field.
