QB Kirk ‘Nightmare On’ Herbstreit (Frosted Quips, Afraid of THE Lunatic Fringe)

Also, he could go a long way towards "being fair" or whatever someone wants to call it if he stopped acting all in the fucking "know" everytime Ohio State comes up on his little ABC/ESPN appearances. He tries to play it both ways...he tries to be an ESPN wonk AND an Ohio State insider, and the proof of that was the smug bullshit he pulled in naming names that weren't involved in the Tat 5. You know what, Ken Doll? If you want to sell yourself out for the ESPN gig, cool, more power to you, get paid. But then don't act like you talking about Ohio State is the same thing as Archie or Spiels doing it, because it isn't even in the same fucking zip code. At all.

awesome post !

I'm shocked to see so many coming out and admitting to being Herbie apologists after all these years. Herbstreit dipped his toe in the water in 2003...he came out and questioned publicly why any offensive recruit would play for Jim Tressel. He gradually ratcheted up the hate. Slowly but surely, more people started agreeing with us that Herbie was a snake. Now it's plain for even most of his apologists to see....and Bucklion has cracked the code on explaining Herbie's douchiness.

Even the "apologists" agreed that he said some pretty dumb stuff, but there were some who were way over the top about hating Herbie.

He's gotten to the point where it's rare to find a Herbie supporter at OSU. He's come a long ways.

Let's review this one more time:

We do not have to like him and have the right to say so. We have the right to think that he sold out his Alma Mater and have a right to say so.

How difficult is that to understand?

:osu:

Spot on.

And I think this has culminated in an agreement among all parties, herbie is a sellout. Jib flat out said it and cinci was damn close with the comment: "but until the school pays his salary and tells him what his job requires him to say".

Few people think he needs to go out of his way to praise tOSU, but nobody should accept him going out of his way to bash and belittle his/our Alma Mater.

Yep, once a Buckeye alway a Buckeye. But even a Buckeye tree has a few bad seeds.

And during that discussion of how Ohio State slipped despite a "mighty victory" I somehow end up being "the contrarian."
No, you get labeled the contrarian because you spend a lot of time on BP playing devil's advocate.

You guys love to knock the Big East, Pac 10, Big 12, ACC teams and talk about the loose rules that govern the SEC, their academic standards and their arrogant conference wide pride -- I do too.

But then you also want to crap on Michigan and the rest of the Big 10 and diminish them in terms of what they accomplish and when their failures fail to float Ohio State's status at the end of the season you want to blame it on Herbie and the talking heads at ESPN.

That's bullshit, pure and simple.
Don't stick your invented garbage down my throat. I don't want to crap on Michigan (now Barwis or QBForce.com, that's another matter). I want them to be strong & respectable to restore pride in what winning the game means, even though I know that means pain and losses as an OSU fan.

Don't paint Herbie into some sort of victim here. He put out an absolutely laughable poll. Not one other AP pollster had OSU below 5, yet he and fellow ESPN entertainer Fowler both had them at 9. It would be ironic if it weren't so typical.

When he was getting ripped apart for it, he appeared briefly on the radio but had no defense for it, so he made an even bigger mess out of it with his "I was half asleep" excuse. Either he lied about the real reason for his vote or he did disrespect his position as a pollster and doesn't deserve one ounce of the defense that you are so earnestly providing in this thread.
SEC!,SEC!, SEC! is not as stupid as many of you seem to think it is. It is an acknowledgement by the collective schools of the fact that any conference team in an OOC/bowl game REPRESENTS the conference.
Another gross misrepresentation of our position. We fully understand the significance of conference success, pride and reputations. That's not what we're trashing.

If Auburn fans want to talk trash, so be it. If LSU, Bama or even Florida fans want to talk about the conference's dominance over the last 5 years, have at it.

We are mocking the idiotic mentality that being roadkill under Auburn's tires (even if the roadkill looked deadly for awhile) earns you bragging rights when they do something your team could not. We mock the onslaught of Vanderbilt or Ole Miss fans who think they have the right to talk trash because of what actually successful programs have accomplished.
Oh, and with less than two minutes to go and the ball in Arkansas hands on the on the OSU 20 which team did you think was going to win the Sugar Bowl?

The way the Bucks went into a shell and let an 18 point lead melt away, almost to the point of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, did not elevate their status.
Hilarious. So now the buckeyes are penalized for losing tight games. OSU has been playing games like that for an entire decade, that's not why Herbstreit placed them at 9.

He placed them there because it is good for his employer's business, the same way it is good for Sportscenter or ESPN Radio ratings to sensationalize the Tat 5 at every waking moment, but all but ignore the far larger scandals with Cam Newton (which weren't just massive but include three separate incidents, two where he was found guilty).

I distinctly remember a huge portion of the Buckeye nation being apologists and thinking he walked on water until the last 2 seasons. If I recall correctly, the phrase "he isn't paid to pimp Ohio State" was used about 10,000 times.

It's simply taken a lot of people a lot of time to admit what many of us saw 8 years ago. That's OK....it's not easy to turn your back on a once great alum. Herbie can make his way back into Buckeye lore but only if he makes it public.

Herbstreit is not paid to fondle Ohio State or to be a hack for them.

You may not like that. You may think he has an obligation to ALWAYS speak highly of his alma mater, but until the school pays his salary and tells him what his job requires him to say he is free to draw his own conclusions.

How difficult is that to understand?
How difficult is it for you to understand that isn't why people criticize him?

Save the hyperbole. We aren't asking Herbie to be a cheerleader. We are asking him to be a professional, something he has given up for a fat paycheck at ESPN.

Anyone who did the following would have been torn to shreds:

- Said no offensive recruit should want to play for Jim Tressel

- Wrongly accused multiple innocent players of improper benefits and never issued any form of apology (the same guy who raced to apologize to Matt McGloin for calling him a handoff quarterback)

- Penalized OSU by three spots for winning a bowl game, placing them 4 spots lower than any other AP pollster, except for his co-worker from a network notorious for ripping OSU

- Made a mockery out of his profession by claiming he was half asleep when he turned it in (yet somehow his gameday co-host had the exact same ranking). Either he lied about the real reason or he disrespected the sport and millions upon millions that ride on those polls.

(there are other reasons as well)

Any media member would have been hounded for disrespecting OSU like that.

Please stop the madness. We want him to be a professional, and clearly that's too much to ask from most Disney employees (as we've seen with the sad caricatures they've scripted over the years).

You can hold your opinion...I did for a long time. However, recently, I don't have much defense for such blatant actions.

This.

I do think he has an obligation to be fair toward them though - and toward any other team he covers for that matter

And this.

Appears to me that he has gone out of his way to take shots at the Buckeyes. Agree with the other posters in terms of ESPN spreading him too thin. He's good at the Gameday commercial thing, marginal as an analyst, and not too hot when he tries to be an insider.

Yeah, I know. If you don't like him, don't watch him.

Remember the denard argument from last October? Exercise in futility. I think Cinci has good insights sometimes, but in some of these arguments, he doesn't seem to follow and gets stuck off on a tangent.

Cinci, I've never been a Herbie basher...borderline apologist at times. However, are you honestly saying you don't see any difference in how he handled Cam Newton and the Tat-5? Are you defending his "addition by subtraction" comments?

Here is a fact for you that I cannot provide a link or connection...Herbie and JT do not care for one another. Herbie LOVED Dave Kennedy. JT did not appreciate news being leaked from his program. JT fired Kennedy.

You can hold your opinion...I did for a long time. However, recently, I don't have much defense for such blatant actions.

Apologize for the tangent, but since I was one who wasn't aware of who Dave Kennedy is; I'll add the following that I found.

http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=33338

Kennedy got his start in the strength and conditioning field at Nebraska, where he earned his degree and trained under Boyd Epley. Kennedy worked his way up the ladder at Nebraska, serving as a student assistant from 1982 until he graduated with a degree in strength coaching in 1985. He helped Epley as an assistant strength coach from 1985 to 1988.

After working on the Nebraska staff, Kennedy was hired as the head football strength coach at Ohio State in 1989. At Ohio State, Kennedy helped bring the Buckeye program to national prominence as he worked with standouts such as Eddie George, Orlando Pace, Joey Galloway, Dan Wilkinson, David Boston, Andy Katzenmoyer, Shawn Springs, Robert Smith and Mike Vrabel. The players Kennedy worked with produced 21 All-America awards while also winning the Heisman and Outland trophies as well as the Butkus, Biletnikoff, Thorpe and Lombardi awards. Seventeen of his Buckeyes went on to be first-round NFL Draft picks.

Kennedy received Ohio State?s Admiral?s Trophy prior to the 1993 Holiday Bowl. The Admiral?s Trophy, voted on by the players, goes to the person whose dedication, hard work and spirit most inspired the team.

During his 13 years at Ohio State, Kennedy established himself as one of the premier strength coaches in the country, drawing praise from ESPN GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit.

?To me in this day and age of college football," Herbstreit said, "the strength coach position has become a high priority because the strength coach is with the players the most of anyone on the staff. His job is to create a winning attitude through the physical and mental development of the players. Dave Kennedy sets the bar in the college football community.?

All I expect out of Herbie is to treat tOSU as he treats any other team. He seems to be unable to to do that. With all due respect, cinci, I think this has been clear for a very long time. If he wants to criticize the program after someone has fucked up, fine, have at it. But I expect to see the same treatment when when similar occurrences happen to other teams.

An as for his presence as an analyst, it's gotten to the point I groan when I see that he is covering the game. The coverage is WAY too focused on the analysts themselves, rather than the game. It gets to the point that I just want him to shut up. I much prefer the coverage we got in the Sugar Bowl (even with the mispronounced names).

It's kinda sad in a way. Someone that all of Buckeye Nation could have looked to with pride, is now looked at with disdain. But he did (and does) bring it on himself.
