QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

We all love Justin for the Buckeyes he is, and it stings to say he's the last QB to beat scUM. Its been half a decade now, and that just sucks.

That said, there has to be a certain reality injected here.

-27th in passing yards
- 21st in QBR
- completing an average of 18 passes per game
- half as many rushing attempts as completions
- 4th most rushing attempts of all QBs.

It became obvious in the twilight of last season that the Steelers were going to be a ground n pound offense this year. Which is exactly what they've done. A QB centric running game, controlled passing based off of that and an opportunistic defense that generates turnovers while not handing the ball back to the other side. Which is why PIT is 4th in turnover differential this season.

It's Tresselball to the nth degree, just at the pro level. And if it wasn't for the protective offense and defense that allows the Steelers to grind the games to a slow pace and keep things within a score, we might be having a completely different tune. No, Chase Daniel, it isn't that Pittsburgh "believes" in Justin, so much that he has a skill set that fits the mold of the offense they were tailoring. Which, I've forgot to mention helps alleviate their pass pro issues. SHOCKER that Broderick Jones isn't a good tackle.

Not to be a downer, only acknowledging that it's far too early to be impressed or to believe that there has been this overnight 180 to Fields' abilities and career.

What this does though is it allows Justin to continue working to improve himself mentally within an offensive structure that isn't asking him to shoulder the offense as a passer. It's minimizing his hits within the pocket and allowing him to be decisive off ball action. There is still plenty of more room for him to be a more complete QB and I hope he reaches that goal.

But, as a gambler, I will be watching for matchups against defenses that are going to force him to play more patiently and methodically from the pocket. Could be as early as the Raiders game, watching how Dallas struggled so much against Lamar. If not then, there won't be a test for almost a full month. That gives plenty of time for JF to settle in as QB1 with no thought of Wilson behind him.

It's a far better situation. He's definitely not ready to go out and sling it around, and won't be this year, if he's ever that kind of QB. It's just nice to see him throwing with anticipation and confidence in the last few games. Still miles to go, but feels like he's finally starting somewhere with a future.

Yeah cause like I said throwing the ball has never been the problem for him. If he see's it he's generally pretty accurate.

The issue with him has always been holding the ball waiting for someone to get open and then throwing it and by extension reading a defense. Do I ever think he will be at CJ's level there? No but if he starts seeing the D as well as the average QB his other traits make him dangerous as hell.

And yesterday I saw him getting the ball out fast and on time for the first time in years in the NFL for more than just a throw or two

Steelers' Justin Fields makes franchise history in Week 4 loss to Colts

Fields made history in a losing cause

In a twist of irony, Justin Fields' first loss as the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting quarterback came on a day where he made franchise history.

When the dust settled on the Colts' 27-24 win over the Steelers, Fields had made history by becoming the first player in franchise history to record 300 passing yards, 50 rushing yards and two touchdowns, according to ESPN. All told, Fields threw for 312 yards and a touchdown on 22 of 34 passing. He rushed for 55 yards on 10 carries that included two runs that ended in the Colts' end zone.

Prior to Fields, Kordell Stewart was the player who came closest to accomplishing that fear. Stewart, the first player in NFL history to throw for 20 touchdowns and run for at least 10 more in the same season, threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 49 yards and two scores in Pittsburgh's win over the eventual Super Bowl champion Broncos in Week 15 of the 1997 season.

Fields' record-setting day did not result in a win, but it did showcase what he and the Steelers offense is capable of after yet another slow start. Trailing 17-3 at halftime, Fields and Co. scored touchdowns on three straight drives in the second half.

I, for one, am deliriously happy that Justin is doing so well for the Steelers. Having been berated etc for da Bears, and now having success with Pittsburg is just simply proof that a round peg won't fit into a square hole, but will fit where is meant to. Not pro afficionado enough to say whether Chicago or Pittsburg is the better program, but on the field, Justin is showing what he can do. And if JF can elevate the Steeler program, so much the better. Eventually, he'll play out his contract, and make his career move, or he'll be traded, and again, hopefully to a team that can utilize his talents to their fullest, not the shit-show that is Chicago. Gotta be hard to a young man who has been revered through HS, and college, to reach his pinnacle (NFL), and get kicked around by the newsies as well as head office, and still maintain a good sense of self. Hats off to you Justin!

I guess I can't shit-talk Caleb Williams this week, but I wish Fields wasn't playing for the Steelers. My wife hates that I want JF to play well on a team that we both hate.

You gotta wonder what would have been if da Bears traded their #1 and got two VHT OLmen instead, and maybe an upscale WR as well. Guess the Chicago fans would have roasted the Bears management anyway, but long term might have righted the ship. Always thought that CJ should have won the Heisman instead. Guess 'past performance does not guarantee future performance' you have to 'earn it'.

They could have had the best Olineman and Marv with all the other trades they did also. That Offense would be very scary and Justin would have had his redemption earlier. He can still get it if he plays more like he did coming right out of the tent instead of the first quarter.
