QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

I wish that was the only thing I had to blame them for.
I think I read somewhere that a team would have to TRY to do as bad as the Browns have done since 1999. A chicken flipping a coin would have made better decisions than the Browns have made.
It's ok I'm a Lion's fan on account of my uncle in NW ohio and Barry Sanders. While the QB futility isn't the same the team futiilit was close for decades

3-0 on the season, 2-0 vs Jimmy

Justin Fields Improves to 3-0 As Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback, 2-0 Against Jim Harbaugh With Win over Los Angeles Chargers

149258_h.jpg

Justin Fields remains unbeaten as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback and against Jim Harbaugh.

Fields, who had one of the signature performances of his Ohio State career when he led the Buckeyes to a 56-27 win over Michigan in 2019 despite battling a knee injury, improved to 2-0 all-time against Harbaugh on Sunday. He handed the former Wolverines coach his first loss as the coach of the Los Angeles Chargers as the Steelers defeated the Chargers, 20-10, to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The former Buckeye signal-caller, who has started all of the Steelers’ first three games this season with Russell Wilson sidelined by a calf injury, continued to strengthen his case that he should be the Steelers’ long-term starter as he completed 25 of 32 passing attempts for 245 yards and one touchdown with one interception while also rushing for a 5-yard touchdown.

The touchdown run in the second quarter was Fields’ first as a Steeler.

He looked really good. Haven't seen him so decisive with the football since he's been in the NFL. There were at least 4 plays that would've been sacks last year in which he tossed a short pass for a few yards. No drive-killing sacks due to him holding onto the ball too long that I saw. Really hope he can build off this and doesn't force things once Russ is healthy again. 200 yds passing, 1-2 TDs, and taking only 1-2 sacks a game is all he has to do

We all love Justin for the Buckeyes he is, and it stings to say he's the last QB to beat scUM. Its been half a decade now, and that just sucks.

That said, there has to be a certain reality injected here.

-27th in passing yards
- 21st in QBR
- completing an average of 18 passes per game
- half as many rushing attempts as completions
- 4th most rushing attempts of all QBs.

It became obvious in the twilight of last season that the Steelers were going to be a ground n pound offense this year. Which is exactly what they've done. A QB centric running game, controlled passing based off of that and an opportunistic defense that generates turnovers while not handing the ball back to the other side. Which is why PIT is 4th in turnover differential this season.

It's Tresselball to the nth degree, just at the pro level. And if it wasn't for the protective offense and defense that allows the Steelers to grind the games to a slow pace and keep things within a score, we might be having a completely different tune. No, Chase Daniel, it isn't that Pittsburgh "believes" in Justin, so much that he has a skill set that fits the mold of the offense they were tailoring. Which, I've forgot to mention helps alleviate their pass pro issues. SHOCKER that Broderick Jones isn't a good tackle.

Not to be a downer, only acknowledging that it's far too early to be impressed or to believe that there has been this overnight 180 to Fields' abilities and career.

What this does though is it allows Justin to continue working to improve himself mentally within an offensive structure that isn't asking him to shoulder the offense as a passer. It's minimizing his hits within the pocket and allowing him to be decisive off ball action. There is still plenty of more room for him to be a more complete QB and I hope he reaches that goal.

But, as a gambler, I will be watching for matchups against defenses that are going to force him to play more patiently and methodically from the pocket. Could be as early as the Raiders game, watching how Dallas struggled so much against Lamar. If not then, there won't be a test for almost a full month. That gives plenty of time for JF to settle in as QB1 with no thought of Wilson behind him.
