QB Julian "Just" Sayin (Official Thread)

Both will come and the best will stay, love the competition.
Imagine not taking Troy Smith because you feared Justin Zwick would get his feelings hurt.
We see this competition in the WR room and we brag about it, now we want to do an about face?
As others said, Air and Julian will be paid handsomely, get elite coaching and training, and the loser will likely have his choice of destinations....they'll be just fine.

Imagine thinking that's even a remotely close comparison

Well, fill me in, why is it not?

This came directly from Zwick...

"While recruiting Zwick, Ohio State's coaches told the quarterback, ranked No. 3 in his class by Rivals.com, that he was the only player at his position the Buckeyes were going to take.
"They actually said they weren't going to (take another quarterback)," Zwick recalled.
They lied.
A few months after Zwick committed, Ohio State offered, and got a pledge, from Troy Smith, a quarterback out of Glenville High School in Cleveland."

This is a tale as old as time - things change, opportunities present themselves.

Zwick was the more highly regarded of the two, Smith was the (also) in state athlete we were taking a chance on.

For this to even attempt to come close (but still fall short) it would have to be Smith who was committed for the longer time...... actually up to and through the point where he had been "locked in", and then going after Zwick.

But that's ignoring the apparent talent discrepancy between the two during the time of their recruitment.

Well the major difference, is that Zwick was the 5star can't miss prospect, and Smith was a 3(on some sites 4)star ATH, who started out returning kicks. Smith was not seen as competition for Zwick. Noland and Sayin are both 5star can't miss prospects!
Also, Zwick was committed to OSU, he had not signed. So he chose to stay committed and sign when Smith committed. Noland is signed and enrolled and doesn't have a choice to decommit.

Troy Smith was recruited as an athlete and played special teams and RB as a redshirt freshman. He wasn't brought in as competition to Zwick, QB just ended up where they needed him and where he fit. It's like how Jalen Marshall was brought in as an athlete but to be used as a hybrid WR/RB but if that didn't work out and he could have worked as a QB they most likely would have put him in that room. Verlon Reed was recruit as athlete also and they try to make him a WR but he really wanted to be a QB so he transfered to division 2 so he could get a shot at playing QB.

Noland and Sayin are both top 3 QB recruits in the country, that's clearly competition between each other. Troy wasn't suppose to be Zwick's competition it just eventually happened.

I've thought they should kind of go back to recruiting some of these athlete who played QB in high school so that we can hopefully get a backup or have someone emerge in an off year. Or just recruit some lesser talented player like Kenny Guiton who could possibly stay with the program and be a career backup.

That’s not the major difference. The major difference is JZ and TS were amateurs under contract. Noland and Sayin are professionals with perpetual free agency.

Boy howdy, think this is a toughie. Didn't pay attention to Sayin at Elite 8/10/11/? just focused on Air Nolan cuz he's a Buckeye. Don't know if the spread between a #4 and a #1 QB is all that different from the jump. Wish the crystal ball could look in the future to see down the road a tad. If Day had known that Burrows would have done what he did, would he have started Haskins? (counterpoint to Zwick v Smith). Air could have decommitted and fled, but instead publically proclaimed his loyalty. I know, I know, college football is about me, me, me, from both the kids and the coaches. Finally, did anyone foresee that Harrison would be such a work-outaholic and make himself the best? Cannot measure heart or work ethic. I'm not making $9 million, so my vote doesn't count, but I'd go with Air Nolan (and the St. Clair's down the road), rather than take Sayin and lose Kleinholtz and Smith (?). I still say "Go Bucks" no matter how the cards play out.

In today's CFB, it's pretty unrealistic. Look around. If touted players don't get early playing time, they just hop in the portal seeking it. You don't see many guys sticking around 2-3 years waiting their turn anymore.
Manning is the only one at QB that I see, and he clearly has the counseling from his family to look long term in ways that other kids won't.

I trust Day to balance the room the way he thinks gives him the best chance to win, both in terms of talent and in terms of feelings/chemistry in the locker room.

It seems pretty clear the delay is because the coaches are trying to talk with the players ahead of time so they don’t find out about bringing in a new QB on social media.

More info from the guy who first broke the news Wednesday night that Sayin would be entering the portal for Ohio State:

Since it looks like all the "experts" covering OSU wanna make things up and deflect for OSU on what's really happening with his transfer, I guess I'll spill the beans. This has been in the works since shortly after Saban left and OSU tried to slip this in with very little notice. They've known since last weekend that he was interested in transferring to OSU, but OSU wanted a few days to figure out how to make it happen without causing chaos. Kienholz and Noland both know he's coming and both have agreed to stick around until after spring ball before making a decision to stay or leave. The real reason why OSU didn't say no to Sayin is bc they don't believe Brown will be on the '24 roster unless he beats out Howard this spring. OSU flat out doesn't feel comfortable going into '25 with Kienholz and Noland bc it probably means bringing in another quick fix starter to save the '25 season, which would really screw the QB room up. At the end of the Day, OSU made the decision to bring in Sayin bc they believe he's their best option to seamless transition into '25 without problems.

I think it’s funny this person is critical of guys like Birm who are trying to do the coaches a solid by helping smooth over the timeline of events through their reporting.

I, for one, appreciate the people who don’t try to burn the program, and players, down.
