QB Joe Burrow (transfer to LSU, 2019 Heisman Winner, National Champion, Cincinnati Bengals)

While it is a bummer and I love Burrow's game, at least this is not a season-ending injury that is easily recovered from. I have a lot of confidence in Haskins and there was some serious debate as to who would be the backup in the first place. Lord forbid if JT gets hurt, but my main concern would be depth at that point until Burrow comes back because I think Haskin is more than capable of taking the reigns if the OL takes care of him (he is not very mobile). However, you would then be one snap away from Martell, who I have high hopes for in the future but just does not have the experience or grasp of the offense (UFM's words, not mine) that would make me feel warm and fuzzy.

Hopefully this is and remains conjecture, and I wish Joe a speedy recovery!

Looking at the schedule. Even at the worst case (6 weeks) He'd be back around the time of the Maryland game (10/7) and have 3 weeks of practice before the Penn State game, which is 10/28 after a BYE.

I think they still could manage to beat about anyone on the schedule besides Oklahoma up to that point, if something were to happen to JT (Indiana, Army, UNLV, Rutgers, Maryland and Nebraska) It would be some nerve racking stuff though.
I don't think it's that bad. I'm more upset because I really like Burrow's game. Haskins or even Martell can get wins against almost that whole slate easily (Nebraska not so easily....but still very doable). I think of it like this......we won a bunch of games last year with one or even both of our hands tied behind our back with Tim Beck. He's gone. Any situation where we're running QB2 or QB3 is still better than QB1 + Beck.

First off hope Burrow has a speedy recovery. Not arguing against you as you are on point all the time. Just wondering why you seem hesitant with Haskins on the field. I see more arm talent and well advanced QB skills than i've ever seen a QB that's donned the scarlet and gray (dates back to the mid 90s). I see NFL throws, advanced ball placement, touch, looking off safeties and just knowing where to go with the football . The only 2 knocks would be no live snaps and grasp of the system. To me he's ahead of the curve for his age and his mobility isn't really that far off from Barrett and Burrow.

I'm not hesitant on Haskins at all, I think he seems every bit as talented as Burrow, albeit with a much different skill set. Maybe I articulated it poorly, but in my post I just said I was worried about depth in JT should get hurt. Haskins is a tremendous talent that I would be confident in to step in and play well. He probably does have more arm talent than anyone on the roster and he was dead even for backup it seemed. My concern would be if (again, lord forbid) Haskins got hurt. Martell is going to be a great one and he might get us a by, just worried on his experience. With Burrow and Haskins, I had more confidence than when we had Braxton, JT and Cardale to be honest.

That being said, I have a feeling that Burrow would have got the slight nod as backup but by the slimmest of margins, but Haskins would keep his arm warm.

The only negative I see is that Haskins changes the run game. The defense can focus more on Weber in the run game because Haskins isn't the running threat that the other two are with the ball.

I've seen players of much lower caliber... and frankly, those who have far less arm, run the read option pretty well. I imagine that with some creative minds on staff, that read option may include some different things in the event that Haskins is under... errrr... behind center.

I hate this for JB, but tOSU is going to be ok. Bright side of this is that Haskins should get real minutes early in the season that should help with where he's, purportedly, weakest. This QB room is absurd with Emory Jones on his was and another stud mostly likely coming in the following year.

That is my thought as well. Coach Wilson has stressed that the offense doesn't really change with Haskins and that he can run it just as well...maybe that is true, but having watched all of his HS game film in detail, the AA game and Spring Game, his legs are substantially behind JT and Joey. Yes, his arm is more advanced but I just don't see a whole ton of run threat out of Dwayne. That being said, if we end up needing Dwayne to step in, we could always mix in Martell, who is the best athlete in the QB room. Some might say that would make us predictable but Tate can spin it for sure, so teams couldn't go all in on the run. And at the end of the day, if the rest of the units step it up (particularly the WR's), Dwayne should be able to pick defenses apart and rarely have to tuck it.

In sum, I agree with everyone else that we will be fine with Joe out. However, I do think Joe probably has the most balance of all the traits of JT, Haskins and Martell, which along with more seniority gave him the slight edge I think. Anyways, get healthy and come back ready to compete Joe.

You've described pretty much every WVU and Oregon(excluding Mariotta) QB...

But remember how effective Cardale was with the speed option?

SMFH

I think Wilson will certainly help as OC. I don't remember Sam Bradford being that much of a running threat at OU, and he won the Heisman(he had a career high of 47yds as a Soph), with serviceable legs and a very live arm in a wide open offense. Something that would benefit Haskins(and it could've Cardale).

Very sorry to hear about Joe, and I wish a speedy recovery.
