You raise a great point. As a race and as a society, we are cursed with a 5 minute memory. People only remember the last few things you did - thus, Troy is remembered as a great QB only by the Ohio State diehard.
Similarly, no matter how great this win feels now, if we don't end this season with a big win it will mostly be remembered as a footnote in history. Right alongside Kenny G vs. Purdue, and Barrett vs Michigan (2016).

The score was 35-20, and there was just 13:13 left in the game. At seemingly the worst time, quarterback J.T. Barrett fumbled the football.
It was an unlucky play at an unlucky time that nearly resulted in the game-sealing drive as Penn State began its drive with the ball at the Ohio State 42-yard line.
Then something happened.
Barrett was handed the football trailing by five points after leading his team on back-to-back touchdown drives in the fourth quarter. After four plays and with 1:48 remaining in the game, he found redshirt senior Marcus Baugh open in the end zone and hit him with a perfect pass over leaping linebackers Manny Bowen and Jason Cabinda to put Ohio State on top 39-38.
In 12 minutes, Barrett went from being the goat of the game to having his Heisman-candidate moment and leading the Buckeyes to a miraculous comeback victory.
And as head coach Urban Meyer stood answering questions at his postgame press conference with fans chanting “O-H,” “I-O” in the background as they exited the stadium, Meyer had nothing but the highest praise to levy on his three-time captain.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever had more respect for a human being and as a person, because you earn respect and you witness people in very dire straits at times, tough situations,” he said. “I’ve never had a kid play perfect, but damn, he was close tonight.”

Early in the fourth quarter, Ohio State junior linebacker Jerome Baker took a peek at the scoreboard and didn’t like what he saw. The No. 6 Buckeyes were down two touchdowns, and No. 2 Penn State had the ball.
Baker and his teammates had no one to blame but themselves.
Penalties, special-teams blunders, turnovers and miscommunication through the first three quarters coalesced into a two-touchdown deficit with 13:13 remaining in the game.
“I was just like give me, give us a break,” redshirt junior Sam Hubbard said. “Everything that could’ve gone wrong, went wrong and the score didn’t reflect how we were dominating on offense and defense and we just had to keep chipping away.”
From the opening kickoff, which running back Saquon Barkley returned 97 yards for a touchdown, the Buckeyes made difficult what would seem easy Saturday night at Ohio Stadium.
Penn State linebacker Koa Farmer caught a short kickoff and rumbled for a miraculous 59-yard return as the Buckeyes were unable to wrangle him and take him down. Ohio State even managed to go offsides after stuffing a kick return inside the 20-yard line.
The Buckeyes racked up 10 penalties for 79 yards, including four false starts. A late first half Hubbard sack was negated due to a face mask penalty. Quarterback J.T. Barrett was sacked twice in the first quarter.
“It wasn’t really getting down, it was just more frustrating because you have a lot of self-inflicted wounds,” left tackle Jamarco Jones said.
Twice, the Buckeyes believed they had interceptions, but both were overturned. In the second quarter, safety Damon Webb reeled in an interception in the end zone, but cornerback Damon Arnette was flagged for pass interference, placing the ball at the 6-yard line. Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley pranced into the end zone on the following play.
Then in the third quarter, cornerback Denzel Ward came down with what was called an interceptionbefore the referees turned the play into a Nittany Lion touchdown due to duel possession after review.
“We knew we were killing ourselves, really,” Baker said. “We were shooting ourself in the foot.”

In one of the most dramatic, come-from-behind history in recent memory for Ohio State, there are a lot of statistics to unpack. The No. 6 Buckeyes won 39-38 against No. 2 Penn State, holding the Penn State offense to just 283 total yards and racking up 529 yards against one of the best defenses in the nation. Here are some important statistics from the game.
16 – consecutive completed passes by J.T. Barrett to finish the game. From the last minutes of the third quarter through the remainder of the fourth quarter, Barrett completed 16 straight passes, setting the Ohio State record. Just when he needed to be, Barrett was at his finest and systematically picked apart the Penn State secondary, completing three touchdown passes during that span and completing Ohio State’s comeback.
The term “surgical precision” is often used to describe a quarterback fitting passes into tight windows. Such a term could be accurately linked to Barrett against Penn State as the redshirt senior completed 33-of-39 total passes. His teammates said it could have been even more.
“I don’t know his stats but we had four drops so those weren’t completely on him,” redshirt junior Terry McLaurin said. “We kind of left some plays on the field, but the way he played, that’s Heisman candidate right there.”
41 – average starting field position by Penn State. The struggles of Ohio State with kickoffs has been well documented. It nearly cost them the game Saturday against Penn State. Right out of the gate, running back Saquon Barkley returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Later in the game, another Ohio State kickoff resulted in linebacker Koa Farmer taking the football out to the Ohio State 23-yard line.
Ohio State’s issues with flipping the field extended beyond the kickoff coverage, however, as the Buckeyes had two turnovers, which put Penn State in Ohio State territory, and were the beneficiary of a muffed punt that redshirt freshman punter Drue Chrisman dropped and then shanked before it rolled to the Penn State 38-yard line. Only two of those aforementioned issues did not see the Nittany Lions put up seven points. The special teams and overall sloppiness of Ohio State nearly cost the Buckeyes in the end. Given that a loss from this point forward ends the Buckeyes’ hopes of winning a championship, they cannot afford to have too many more games littered with similar blunders.

Incredibly, the couple of articles I've seen this morning don't have him there. Most still have Barkley on top, proving how powerful the media narrative really is. Barkley is a great player, but in his team's biggest game, he was totally absent in cruch time, managing NEGATIVE yardage in the 4th quarter. Meanwhile, the "other guy", played a nearly flawless game and took over inncrunch time. You want statistics? Barrett has them.

Barrett fifth behind Barkley, Love, Mayfield, and friggin' Adams of ND. Frankly, the Hisman has been a joke for a long time. It's not a competition based on merit, it's a popularity contest. If JT keeps playing and we keep winning, maybe he overcomes this, but it's difficult. The media often picks the winner within the first three weeks of the season, and that's almost impossible to overcome.

Totally agree. Have to show them something that they will bite at in order to take advantage of them.
They were forced to defend the swing and out wide that cleared the congestion for things like Dixon streaking down the middle.
Was the game perfectly called? Probably not, but it was one hell of a lot better than what we’ve had for the two years prior and the calls were executed to set up later plays.
Also, considering at least 21 points were gifted by ST or short fields, Wilson / Day scripted an ass kicking of the #2 team in the country.
I’ll take that any week.

I don't understand Barkley.... There are 22 players including a few QB's who have more rushing yards than him. How can you give a running back the Heisman when that's the case? Just because he's returned a few kicks? So what ? Penn State's linebacker nearly ran a kick back against us.
Mayfield's probably got the best case against Barrett. Outplayed him head to head and stats are a touch better, but it's real close
