QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

It's Urban? Don't think I'll be on that train for awhile.
To fire? No.
To blame? Yes.
As the constant variable across all of those struggles and schematic similarities? Yes.

As a guy who tries to do too many things (and has had two separate three-headed disasters calling plays in a 4.5 year span), and then when things get tough he resorts to his bread and butter, slamming his fullback QB into the line? Yep.

Playing musical chairs with the QBs? Yes.

Trying to run an innovative pro style spread with two read option college minds and a QB-run HC? Yes.

JT shoulders plenty of blame, as do the blockers, the WRs and the playcallers. But the latter involves an absolute wizard in Wilson who suddenly started calling Tim Beck calls for 3 of the first 4 halves of 2017. Either he forgot how he runs his offense or he wasn't in charge.

Only thing that has changed is the emotions from OKL have lessened. We all expected JT and the offense as a whole to tear up 5 overmatched opponents. The questions many have about JT come from his performances in our last 5 games against teams with a pulse.
Clemson 2016
Michigan 2016
Wisconsin 2016
Notre Dame 2016
Michigan 2015

The last 3 were decent to good. The first two were bad.

Urban is a fantastic coach, we are SO lucky to have him, but Josh is right that the offensive woes largely rest with him. Along with the concerns that came along with the Beck hire, Warriner as OC, etc, Urban had that odd change of heart about how to run an offense for part of the year in 2015 - claiming that his offensive style was too hard on QBs. Then, when he came back around to his old style, he still had that tendency to run the QB a lot. Many of the same complaints folks had about Beck are also Meyer trademarks.

Now, JT has had 3 QB coaches and 3 OCs I think (not counting Meyer's input). So, the ability to gain stability has probably stunted his growth some and I think we have all seen that JT sometimes makes decisions late. Ultimately, in spite of the challenges posed by having all those different coaches, that late decision making problem rests on JT, but that hasn't been so evident recently. Along with making decisions quickly, he's also hitting players in stride, leading to YAC. Why are these 2 things happening suddenly? Well, first/foremost, it's because Oline play has been strong (and competition has been weak). Hopefully it is also because play calls have put the offense in a position to exploit the defense. Both of those assertions will be put to the test this weekend.

If we can get solid OLine play (doesn't have to be the several seconds that JT has been getting over the past few weeks - just ample time), then JT should be able to execute. If he gets that kind of time, I suspect he will perform well just as he has the last few weeks. If he gets that kind of time and performs poorly, well then...we have a problem. Nice thing is, we get to find out this weekend.

The only performances that matter are the ones where the outcome can even remotely be in question. When we're playing teams that are outmatched by a mile everyone looks like studs and everyone's shortcomings are covered up. I hope he plays lights out against PSU..just have to see it vs. real competition. He's had the yips for a year now--when you see him play in person it really is glaring. Until he's put in a situation where he's got to throw into a window with any kind a timing we won't know anything.

Well the first sentence gives me pause. I assure you that had JT's performance in any of the past 5 games been subpar this thread would have been 50 pages longer with calls for his benching. On the flip side, how would we know if our backups are even worth risking? Their performance wouldn't matter given this thinking. In which case, saying Haskins or Burrow looked good in their snaps means nothing. I hate to break it to you, but I've sat at the Shoe and watched COUNTLESS games against opponents that were outmatched by a mile ... and quite a few of them turned into nail-biting, edge of the seat finishes ... some that we lost. Those performances MATTERED. Those wins mattered. The losses in such cases REALLY mattered. You don't just get to discount a performance because it doesn't meet some arbitrary "big game" metric.

In my original response to you I somewhat implied that you weren't rooting for JT's success. My apologies. I do believe you want him to succeed. I think we all do. Guess I'm frustrated that we (as a fan base) feel free to point out every inadequacy large or small, but fail to acknowledge the successes. I get it. He isn't the gun slinger some of us would like, doesn't mean he isn't the best quarterback for this team. In any event, for whatever reason(s), he IS our starter and that is highly unlikely to change. I suggest we put aside all the doubts and fear of a poor performance and just enjoy what the kid has done for us and is currently doing. He's on a hell of a roll right now and I for one intend to enjoy it ... for however long it lasts (until he loses, then he's a bum :-)

Curious as to why you omitted Oklahoma. The Sooners certainly seem to qualify as a team with a pulse, and adding that game would flip your conclusion.
Subconscious protection against soul crushing memories? Not sure. For a "team with a pulse" both oklahomas get included. For challenging defenses, I'm not sure either one makes it (but that's not why they're oddly missing).

STILL THE SAME CAPTAIN. J.T. Barrett entered the season on the verge of breaking every other quarterback record that matters at Ohio State.

Here's an 11W poll from September 9th:

J.T. Barrett is the Same Quarterback He was Against Oklahoma

JT-Barrett-rush-1170x780.jpg

The Ohio State offense put up just 350 yards of total offense in week two against Oklahoma. It was the Buckeyes’ worst yardage game this season by over 230 yards, and it happened against a Sooner defense that has allowed 523, 449, 428, and 412 yards over their last four games.

OSU rushed for a season-low 167 yards against Oklahoma, but it was J.T. Barrett’s 19-of-35 passing for 183 yards that everyone remembers.

It’s also what has everyone concerned heading into Saturday’s matchup against Penn State.

The Nittany Lions will come into Ohio Stadium with the nation’s best pass efficiency defense. They have allowed a nation-low three touchdown passes, and their 5.2 yards per attempt allowed is the lowest in the nation as well.

This is going to be the biggest test for the Buckeye passing game this season, and every last ounce of OSU’s offensive performance is seemingly being put on Barrett’s shoulders.

The good news for Ohio State is that no quarterback in the nation is playing better than Barrett right now. His numbers have been documented over the last five games plenty, and he is a completely different quarterback than he was at the start of the season.

Right?

“No. I feel the same,” Barrett said last week.
