QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

Zero has happened in the last 5 weeks that we all didn't expect. The same questions still exist.

I guess you thought after Oklahoma JT would have:
Been 99 of 137 for a completion % of 72.3%
Thrown for 1,029.9 yards
Thrown 18 TD passes and NO interceptions
Rushed 39 times for 232 yards
Rushed for 4 TDs and NO fumbles
QBR for those 5 games combined would be 178.7

You really thought he'd be that good? Come on, be honest now ... LOL

No way to say what the future holds but if you really can't get behind the kid and root for his success, then I got nothing for you. Guess you'll need to wait until he plays poorly again so you can say I told you so! :-) We aren't changing anything from behind a keyboard so I suggest you enjoy the ride while you can.

I agree. Good time to be a Buckeye. Support our guys. They are playing well and hope they play well enough to win Saturday afternoon. If not, root them on the following week. PSU is a good team with good athletes too.

Go Bucks!!!

The only performances that matter are the ones where the outcome can even remotely be in question. When we're playing teams that are outmatched by a mile everyone looks like studs and everyone's shortcomings are covered up. I hope he plays lights out against PSU..just have to see it vs. real competition. He's had the yips for a year now--when you see him play in person it really is glaring. Until he's put in a situation where he's got to throw into a window with any kind a timing we won't know anything.

Hopefully we learn good things this weekend. It WILL be a tough challenge.

To add on to my post above, in 2006 Troy Smith won the Heisman whilst Quarterbacking Ohio State...

There was a stretch where Ohio State played:
6-7 (2-6) Iowa - Win 38-17
4-8 (3-5) Bowling Green - Win 35-7
4-8 (1-7) Michigan State - Win 38-7
5-7 (3-5) Indiana - Win 44-3
6-7 (3-5) Minnesota - Win 44-0
2-10 (1-7) Illinois - Win 17-10
4-8 (2-6) Northwestern - Win 54-10

(All records are season overall records, league play in parens) Not exactly a murderers row, I think you'll agree @GovTressel

Troy was a combined:
102 of 153 66.7% for 1307 resulting in 18TDs against 2 picks. He added 217 and a score on the ground.

In two less games (which is to say, since OU), JT is a combined:
99 of 137 72.3% for 1351 resulting in 18TDs against zero picks. He has added 232 yards and 4 scores on the ground.

The stats are a direct result of Meyer's system...not exactly the first of Meyer's QBs to fill the stat sheet.

And I'd challenge the view that he's played that much better the last five weeks. The weakness of our opponents completely hides many issues, the biggest one being his lateness on throws and unwillingness to throw it unless a guy is wide open.

I know I come off as a hater on the kid, but I assure you that no one is rooting for him more than me. I hope I'm wrong in my judgments.
I understand and I too was in this mind set after the OU game and even to an extent after Army originally (then I watched it again and felt he was fairly good).. He did this his first year though with this sort of run and it fueled the rest of his season, and I believe now you are going to see that very thing this year too.

I understand that the throws are coming against lesser opponents but throwing people on time, throwing people open, throwing into tight windows, and making the correct decisions is hard to do in 7 on 7 let alone a game. As you said we will see and I wouldn't be overly shocked if JT struggles a bit. However I would be absolutely floored if JT shows no improvement at all.

I think JT can go 22-35 for 240 with a score or something... He just has to avoid that 16-38 for 180 with a pick. All this is probably for not though because if its cold and raining (90% chance rain until 7pm on Saturday) then I think we see a heavy dose of run.

I just hope PSU still counts as a "big game" after Barrett trashes them. JT has struggled in the past but he's also excelled. Being skeptical is fine, but for some reason a huge percentage of OSU fans have adopted far more skepticism and harshness towards his play than most rival fans.

Ask Michigan fans what JT is going to do them. It will be far more glowing than OSU fan predictions, and that was the case before PSU undressed them.

He had a horrendous game against tsun last year. I watched it from the stands as receivers ran wide open all over the place and he triple-hitched his way to a sack or tip over, and over, and over again. 2015 he ran well, and 2014 played pretty poorly.

Again, I love the kid and hope for nothing more than to see him get over this mental hurdle he's developed--just pointing out that we don't know anything from playing teams that are serverly overmatched.

I agree with most of what you're saying...but coaching style/approach has a ton to do with that. If Meyer had our receivers from 05/06-geeze! EVERYONE was always open with a roster filled top to bottom with NFL guys on the outside.

Smith's numbers were the least Heisman worthy of any QB in memory. His win was a product of team success and a weak Heisman class that year.

that offense that year is a fraction of what this one is as far as production.. even against as you put it lay up games.

The fun part of the can't beat elite teamBama stuff is that Jalen Hurts remains very similar to JT Barrett as a passer. he's a high 50s, low 60% passer with 152 yds per game. Half of those included less than 50 yds rushing and below 4.2 ypc.
He had a horrendous game against tsun last year. I watched it from the stands as receivers ran wide open all over the place and he triple-hitched his way to a sack or tip over, and over, and over again. 2015 he ran well, and 2014 played pretty poorly.
The narrative is that Barrett can't beat elite teams (Even though he's won far more, and slain more big opponents than any other OSU QB). Other than 2016 Michigan, including them is disingenuous and transparent in its purpose. They aren't within miles of Bama, Clemson or what PSU 2017 could be. Frankly I don't think they're close to PSU 2016.

Barrett threw all over Sparty in their house when they were still OSU's daddy. That was a monster game and transformed this program.

If his WRs execute (and the PSU dbs are not allowed to molest the OSU WRs nonstop), I look for a similar performance this weekend. The problem is 35 pts might not be enough to win if the OSU DL does not hide their struggles in the secondary. Fortunately PSU's OL has major issues.

Also, to revisit the earlier proclamation, Barrett obliterated Michigan in 2015 in their house. "He ran well" is wildly underselling it. He had a combined 252 yds and 4 tds with no picks. He hit passes when needed. This opened things up big time for Zeke who was suddenly not bottled up.

Against ND a game later he wasn't perfect but they finally deployed the polished passing attack that we expected to see after the trilogy instead of the laughably bad Meyer offense we were subjected to instead. They threw early and often in that one. He wasn't perfect but he was hardly shell shocked.
Again, I love the kid and hope for nothing more than to see him get over this mental hurdle he's developed--just pointing out that we don't know anything from playing teams that are serverly overmatched.
Will his WRs and OL finish pass plays? Because in those "big games", one or both frequently fail to do their jobs and it results in the hitching we see from JT. The 800-1000 hits he's taken are a factor as well.

Will his receivers catch the deep balls? That would be nice. They've finally started doing that. If they bothered to do that in either the PSU 16 or OU 17 games, Barrett's last regular season loss would be VT.

-I was responding to a specific statement about tsun. And he had 113 yards passing in '15...I did say he ran well.
-Alabama's ability to win without an elite QB is a statement toward their overall dominance in skill and coaching across the board. Also, it's difficult to compare stats between players in complelty different systems.
-All of this misses the bigger point which is the "yips" that he has developed. It's his regression that has alarmed people.

Well, memories of 2014 have kept me 100% behind him all this time, but there's no way I could have guessed the numbers. I remain steadfastly in his corner, and wish him the sweetest of victories this week and nothing but the best in the future. In fact, I think it's time for all of us to start thinking nothing but good thoughts about JT and the Buckeyes. Don't mean to be Pollyanna-ish but that's where I'm at.

By the way, good for you, 3yards! :urban2:

:oh: GO BUCKEYES!!!!
