QB CJ Stroud (All B1G, 2022 B1G QB of the Year, All-American, NFL OROY, Houston Texans)

Shout out to the OL and Justin Frye for doing the work to allow Stroud to operate. Looked like he had a clean pocket and time to diagnose whatever he wanted all night. Had to check the box score and confirm what I thought I saw. Wisconsin had zero sacks, zero TFLs, and zero QB hurries last night.

No holding penalties either I think?

What's the signal when you need someone to throw another TD pass?

Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud assesses Buckeyes’ performance in 52-21 rout of Wisconsin

On being able to distribute the ball wherever he wanted in the first half, and what it is like to know he has so many reliable weapons at his disposal:

“Like you said, I think in the first half, we distributed the ball pretty well. Had some good momentum, coming out quick. That’s something that we definitely want to do, and I think we built that chemistry with Cade, Emeka and Marvin and really everybody who touched the ball, they do a great job. But we built that chemistry in the offseason.

“So, being able to do that, and then we even had some adversity in the first half, too, kind of slowing down a little bit. We should have scored on that second-to-last drive, maybe even the last drive. But, I mean, at the end of the day, I think we bounced back from that. And it’s good to get some of that early on in conference play so we can have that feeling of us coming back even with adversity.”

On what it is like to have two running backs that can put up numbers like TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams, and if anything changes for him depending on which one is in the game:

“I mean, both of them have been great, not only just running the ball but in pass protection as well. So, we spend a lot of time on that, but at the same time, as y’all can tell, they’re toting the rock really well. But it starts up front. I mean, I always preach to my O-lineman that y’all are the best players on this team. We don’t move if y’all don’t move, or we’re not great if y’all aren’t great.

“So, I definitely think that they take that to heart every week, and this is a bigtime challenge for us knowing that Wisconsin was big and physical and they wanted to… they said we couldn’t run the ball or they were gonna stop the run, whatever the case may be. And they were a good team, but I felt like that was a challenge to us and we wanted to step up to that. So, Miyan and Trey were great, but I definitely think it starts with the O-line and tight ends blocking up front. Even the receivers did a great job blocking today.”

On whether he will think more about the five touchdown throws he made or the few throws he missed coming out of this game:

“A little bit of both. I mean, working these plays, we work them so hard that you have to enjoy the win at the same time. But like you said, I mean, I could always be better. I’m never going to play perfect, so y’all can get that out of your head right now. Never gonna play perfect. So, that interception, I heard Coach Day, it was my fault, I gotta make the throw.

“They were in cloud coverage, I tried to anticipate it early on, tried to throw it before he broke, but I probably should have waited until he broke a little bit. I thought he was going to go at a higher angle. But Marvin did a great job with that route, I just gotta make the throw better. And then I just kind of got irritated after that and I gotta get out of my own head, but I mean, I think that’s a good thing. And then we fought back, that’s the most important thing.”

Heisman Trophy Odds 2022 Week 4: Tennessee's Hendon Hooker is starting to turn heads

1. Ohio State QB CJ Stroud (+150)

Stroud took his Heisman campaign into conference play Saturday against Wisconsin and ended up throwing his first interception of the season… He also threw for five touchdowns for a second straight week, bringing his total up to 16 through four games and shortening his odds from +250 to +150 to win the Heisman. It’s currently his to lose.

Just sayin': It's good to be the Heisman frontrunner; however, the Heisman is usually won or lost in November.

Stroud's Passing Numbers for the Year

79/112 - 1222 yards - 16td - 1int PE: 207.543

Ohio State's Opponents' Defensive Numbers for Games Against Everyone Not Named Ohio State

168/317 - 2012 yards - 13td - 10int PE: 113.536

CJ has thrown for more touchdowns against those teams than their 12 other opponents combined.
Ohio State's opponents, when not playing Ohio State, aggregate to the 28th best pass defense in the country by PE, 18th best by yardage per game.
CJ's differential passing efficiency is 1.828 (Historically Elite).

EDIT: Having played Ohio State, the Buckeyes' opponents aggregate to the 93rd best pass defense by PE and the 116th by yardage per game.

Good stuff @DaddyBigBucks. And this is all almost entirely without the top wide receiver in the nation.

Good point.

It could be argued that the absence of JSN was most keenly felt in the ND game, when Stroud had yet to adjust to that fact. If you remove the Notre Dame game from consideration...

Stroud's numbers for the last 3 games

55/78 - 999 yards - 12.808 yards/attempt - 14td 1int
PE: 234.764

Differential Pass Efficiency: 2.269 (Utterly Absurd)

EDIT: It's not just the differential PE; that raw PE is pretty absurd as well. Stroud is on pace to set an NCAA record for PE as it is. The number for the last 3 games would shatter it to oblivion. (No, there's no chance he keeps that pace... Then again, with the return of JSN...)

Those are fun facts. He could actually shatter the PE record because looking at the rest of the schedule, only PSU and maybe *ichigan (maybe Iowa?) might have defenses that can slow us down, everyone else we should shred to pieces. PSU for sure is going to be a challenge, they have a good secondary and good defense overall. Plus we should have JSN back. On the point of JSN, I absolutely think not having JSN for the ND game threw off CJ's stats...I think JSN was a critical piece of the game plan and having him come out early hurt. We eventually adjusted, but it took time.

Long-term though it may help to build the chemistry with the other guys should we not have JSN available. Now I think Stroud is more than comfortable with any of Harrison, Egbuka, Fleming, X Johnson or Stover (and to some extent Ballard it seems now). Not to say he didn't already trust those guys, but live game reps with them is a precious thing and makes a believer out of everyone. Even against lesser defenses, Stroud is putting the ball right where it should be damned near every time, it is a sight to see.

Among the quarterbacks in the top 5 in passing efficiency (also the only quarterbacks with PE > 190), their opponents average ranking in defensive PE is as follows:

CJ Stroud:…………………73.25
JJ McCarthy:……………93.00
Max Duggan:………………86.00*
Tanner Morgan:………98.67*
Grayson McCall:…117.67*

* = Played a lower-division opponent that was not included in average ranking

It is to be expected that all quarterbacks in the top 5 are bringing down their opponents’ ranking this early in the season, so the big numbers are not surprising.

Stroud is the only qb in the top 5 who has not faced a defense ranked lower than 100. It is notable that Stroud’s worst performance was against the lowest ranked defense he’s faced (ND: 94)

I don't know where you grab your info but I can only assume that Rutgers is also a lower PE Defense as well?
Sparty is going to balloon CJ's numbers but it'll be worth it. LOL. Good stuff DBB
