QB CJ Stroud (All B1G, 2022 B1G QB of the Year, All-American, NFL OROY, Houston Texans)

Stroud's effort against Rutgers (17 for 23, 330 yards, 5 TD - 266.17) stands as the 7th best passing efficiency in a single game for any Ohio State quarterback, ever (minimum: 10 completions).

If you change the qualifying criterion from 10 completions (used in OSU record book) to 20 attempts, then CJ's effort against Rutgers ranks first.

Seriously.

He threw his first college pass this year, and he now holds the record for the best single game passing efficiency in Ohio State history for all games with a minimum of 20 pass attempts.

As for season efficiency, Ohio State fans are spoiled: the three best years in school history are the three most recent seasons.

CJ's current efficiency of 191.16 is better than all of them. The current record is 181.42 for Justin's 2019 season.

For those who are wondering, after 6 games, Justin's efficiency was 187.54 after the first 6 games of 2019.
For those who point out that CJ has played only 5 games, Justin's efficiency was 194.42 after 5 games.

In 2019, Justin had played 1 ranked team, with 4 left to go before the playoff as of this point in the season.
CJ has played 1 ranked team, with 4 left to go before the playoff.

So CJ is either ahead of Justin's pace or a shade behind it, depending on how you slice it.

EDIT: Oh by the way... CJ built half of that 191.16 rating with a bum shoulder

ALSO EDIT: Yeah, having the protection he's had, the running game he's had, and the best WR room in the country are a big part of these numbers, not to mention a play-caller who gives opposing coaches lessons every week; but we had no right to expect this from someone who'd never thrown a pass in college.

It doesn’t really matter what the outside world says,” Stroud said after the Buckeyes’ 66-17 win against Maryland on Saturday. “If it’s God or my family or my teammates talking then I’ll listen. If it’s not one of them then I’m probably not going to listen.”

I like that outlook, understanding that he’s including the coaches in the teammates part.

HIS TEAM NOW. Any lingering doubt that C.J. Stroud was Ohio State's starting quarterback died cleanly and quietly on Saturday afternoon as he sliced apart Maryland's secondary like an angry surgeon for three quarters.

But as my good pal and fantasy football opponent Bill Landis points out, it may have been his on-field performance that solidified his status as the team's starter, but it was what happened after he went to the sideline that proved this is now his football team.

I watched Stroud on the sidelines late in the third quarter and into the fourth as McCord and Miller got valuable reps in garbage time. Stroud moved from teammate to teammate, regardless of which side of the ball they played on. There was a quick chat with safety Craig Young and a side conversation with center Luke Wypler. There’s been a sense that Stroud had won over this team since the spring. That shows up most in the way that teammates rally around him on the field but also in those moments on the sideline when Stroud’s work is done and players just seem to gravitate toward him.

Stroud’s understated confidence was always going to serve him well as he competed for the starting job. Now it’s starting to show up in games. You’re seeing an Ohio State offense that scored 56 points on 56 plays before the starters sat on Saturday that looks like it’s about to take off and re-write the program record books.

Stroud is over striding in that pic. That's what they're working on to get the throws down.

He has an elite release and the ball comes out quick and effortlessly, especially for a freshman. But if he reduces that stride, he might be the best we ever had.

The only similarity to the last two guys to sling it in the S&G are the video game numbers. Stroud attacks 10-19 yards down the field at a 40% clip, that's 15% more than Justin did and well beyond Haskins, who was running a more dink & dunk offense with a ton of pop-pass sweeps to take advantage of what Parris & KJ could do near the LOS. Justin's deep ball in 2020 was the best I've ever seen at Ohio St, and Stroud is nearly comparable just five games into his career.

If he was pushing the ball downfield this much in August during camp, I can see why his shoulder would already be sore Week 1.

I’ve been saying to myself all season that they let him throw between the hashes waaaay more than they let Justin in 2019. His anticipation is something.
