C.J. Stroud looking 'real good' in practice, per Garrett Wilson
Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud missed last week's game against Akron with a sprained right shoulder. However, things appear to be trending in the direction of Stroud starting for the No. 11 Buckeyes (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) at Rutgers (3-1, 0-1) on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET; BTN). Junior wide receiver Garrett Wilson added to that optimism following OSU's practice on Wednesday when he was asked if Stroud has performed well in practice thus far this week.
“Oh yeah, he’s looked good. He’s looked real good," Wilson said.
Wilson then explained how a veteran wide receiver like himself can help a young quarterback. Whether it's the redshirt freshman Stroud, or true freshman Kyle McCord who started against Akron.
“Well, it really comes down to getting those game-like reps," Wilson said. "Because those reps you get in the game, you can only get them on Saturdays. So, you’ve got to find a way to make it as real as possible throughout the week. And being a quarterback – I grew up playing quarterback so I’d like to think I know a little something – but the only way you can really know what it’s going to be like is getting those reps. So, it’s really hard to just watch.
“Now, some people have the special ability to just watch film and be ready on the field, but most people need those reps throughout the week to be able to get to that point. So, just getting those game-speed reps and making sure you’re getting real looks throughout the week (is big). If we’re getting a game rep with C.J., that’s a real rep and we’re running off the ball, so in the game it’s the same thing; there’s no difference.
“So, that’s been me and Chris (Olave’s) focus and Jaxon (Smith-Njigba’s) focus as far as just being the best in the room.”
