Justin Fields and Caleb Williams can make your playcallers into geniuses. CJ and Day couldn’t find that dynamic. CJ had to do it with his arm ..he was late a lot is that him or play call.
the big difference last year in the rose bowl was - and this is a SIGNIFICANT difference compared to this year - is that he was hungry and out to prove something. this year... not so much. seemed to me he thought everything was his to lose, so he was trying to just not screw up. and a team who was hungrier with a punk qb who was also hungrier and out to prove something came, for the second year in a row, and snatched the prize.
simple as that.
Hell, worship fucking Meatloaf. I didn't give a shit. Just beat those peckerwoods up north.
CJ didn't have to do it with his arm, he was unwilling to commit himself to the run to help his team. This is so well displayed in his statement that he did not know if he would play in an non-CFP bowl game. An Ohio State quarterback who makes such a statement should have determined that he will not play immediately.
Perhaps I am wrong, but what I see is a kid who is not committed to his team...involved certainly, committed no. I just don't believe that he played for his team so much as he played for himself. Again, his inability to answer whether he would play again for Ohio State is a stunningly selfish statement.
As I said, I am a person of faith. I respect that this young man and many members of this team appear to have strong religious beliefs. However, I also believe that one's faith is your own deeply personal set of beliefs. The constant repeating of, "First, I..." is not appropriate in my opinion. In my opinion, and perhaps it is just me, but I believe it detracts from interviews and it makes others on the team who do not share his beliefs feel "somewhat less than." In one interview with another player, he inappropriately shifted the discussion about the player's performance to his attendance at Bible classes. The pointing to the sky after every successful pass suggests that somehow God is blessing him but not the poor devoted person of faith playing for another team that will win only one game this year.
I have done lots of interviews with the electronic and press media in my life. I think anyone who puts on a uniform or represents an institution needs to always remember that being there for the institution shapes what is appropriate behavior.
So, I am not criticizing his faith. I am saying that I do not believe an interview about a game is a place to comment on or promote one's personal faith or religious beliefs. I am saying that it is appropriate to share those beliefs in a situation when people are gathered for worship or religious discussion.
I wish him well in his future endeavors and deeply appreciate what he contributed. However, I think that game should be his last.
