U-M, MSU try to overtake Ohio St. in race for Cleveland QB

bilde

Few college programs have cracked the Cleveland Glenville High-to-Ohio State pipeline that has developed during coach Jim Tressel's successful reign in Columbus. That said, the old adage, "You can't win if you don't play" always applies in recruiting. One of the talented prospects that opposing coaches appear willing to tussle with the Buckeyes for is dual-threat quarterback Cardale Jones.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Jones turned a lot of heads last season, using his rifle arm to account for more than 2,500 yards and 23 touchdowns through the air. Meanwhile, he used his 4.55 40 speed to accumulate more than 500 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Despite a heartbreaking, 16-15 loss to Hilliard Davidson in the state title game, Jones proved to coaches and scouts alike he possesses BCS-caliber talent.

"Talent-wise, I haven't seen anybody (at Glenville) throw the ball like that since Troy Smith and Terry Jones in the '70s," Tarblooders coach Ted Ginn Sr. told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Added Scout.com Midwest regional manager Allen Trieu, "his (No. 21 ranking in Ohio) may surprise some, but let's remember that this is a strong Ohio year. This puts Jones right on the borderline of 3-4 stars and the Scout300. To me, that's right where he should be. He has the ceiling of a four-star guy, but just needs a little more consistency."

"I'm actually going down there (to Columbus) on Thursday, and I'm actually expecting an offer this weekend," he said. "If not, I'm still going to keep my hopes up for Ohio State and many more schools that could offer. Nothing is a guarantee with me and Ohio State -- or me and any school, actually. Until I take more visits and see how I like the campuses and not just the football team, I won't (make a decision)."

I am really glad that he is staying positive about his Buckeye recruitment. It is such a numbers crunch for available schollies, but 2 QBs wouldn't be a bad idea especially with the ceiling that each of them have... which is quite high.

lets give Cardale an offer

Cardale Jones just might be the best H.S. QB in the country or at the very top with 1 or 2 others.

That is why I hope he receives an offer from JT ASAP at this camp today.

He is a tremendous QB talent, a great kid and loves Ohio State. :oh::io:

Under-the-radar prospects shine - Insider - ESPN

Raw, but talented
There is a lot of buzz about two Ohio QB prospects -- Miller and Cardale Jones (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville). With Miller out of the line-up, Jones got an opportunity to showcase his raw, but very impressive physical tools. He looks like a taller version of another quality QB in this class Marquise Williams (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek). Jones has a big arm, great size and a lot of physical tools to mold. He too must adjust to playing from under center and developing consistent footwork so that his accuracy can become more consistent. But there is no question he is capable of making all the throws.

Unless we swing and miss on some guys I feel good about (which would shock me) and have an "extra" scholarship to give to Jones in December, I don't see an offer being extended.

We've got a few more scholarships than we originally thought coming into this class, but with the talent level out there, some other needs to fill and really being in the driver seat to come away with a stacked class - I just don't see it.

Jones is a heck of a QB and will be good at the next level. I love the kids work ethic, his "want" to be a Buckeye and just how far he's come in a rather small amount of time... No fault of his own, but his High School tenure is just coming to an end at the wrong time.
