U-M, MSU try to overtake Ohio St. in race for Cleveland QB
Few college programs have cracked the Cleveland Glenville High-to-Ohio State pipeline that has developed during coach Jim Tressel's successful reign in Columbus. That said, the old adage, "You can't win if you don't play" always applies in recruiting. One of the talented prospects that opposing coaches appear willing to tussle with the Buckeyes for is dual-threat quarterback Cardale Jones.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Jones turned a lot of heads last season, using his rifle arm to account for more than 2,500 yards and 23 touchdowns through the air. Meanwhile, he used his 4.55 40 speed to accumulate more than 500 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Despite a heartbreaking, 16-15 loss to Hilliard Davidson in the state title game, Jones proved to coaches and scouts alike he possesses BCS-caliber talent.
"Talent-wise, I haven't seen anybody (at Glenville) throw the ball like that since Troy Smith and Terry Jones in the '70s," Tarblooders coach Ted Ginn Sr. told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Added Scout.com Midwest regional manager Allen Trieu, "his (No. 21 ranking in Ohio) may surprise some, but let's remember that this is a strong Ohio year. This puts Jones right on the borderline of 3-4 stars and the Scout300. To me, that's right where he should be. He has the ceiling of a four-star guy, but just needs a little more consistency."
