I'm not sure that it wasn't at least partially by design. Everyone expected Herman to dial up a ball control, QB-heavy run scheme and we did precisely the opposite. After we got up on Bucky, there was no reason to show the read-option with Jones. I think he goes ape-[Mark May] on Alabumma.

I have no idea what Meyer, Herman and company will do in the Sugar Bowl, but this season has made me fall in love with surprises all over again. Let's roll the Tide. :urban2:

The best part about his game, and all the people who are saying "but Alabama is facing a third string QB!" is the fact is, time wise/reps wise he was way more than a 3rd string QB. And not only that, but he will improve his game more than any other starting QB in the playoff. He'll go from having a 50/50 split in reps for spring/first half of fall camp, then immediately was a 100% backup for 14 weeks, then got 100% of starting QB snaps for one week. He'll now have 100% of starting QB snaps for three weeks.

I did notice that all his TD bombs were of about the same length. If tOSU does not break this tendency, it means that Bama will know when the long ball is coming. Herman liked to take his shot after tOSU moved out of the danger zone, but before he ran out of field.

Because 40 yard passes only work if they go in the end zone? Same play works whether you're at your own 10 yard line, or at their 40 yard line. Plus there's always an opportunity for YAC. Only the first one had no chance of that.

Devin Smith caught 3 touchdown passes as listed below. Doing basic math, Mr Mensa up in the box decided to launch them when his offense was on the Wiscy 39, 42, and 44 yardline. If I were the Tide and tOSU was on my 42 yard line, I might want to be ready for a long throw my Cardale?

OHIOST Q1 13:01 Devin Smith 39 yd pass from Cardale Jones (Sean Nuernberger kick)
OHIOST Q2 11:09 Devin Smith 44 yd pass from Cardale Jones (Sean Nuernberger kick)
OHIOST Q3 9:24 Devin Smith 42 yd pass from Cardale Jones (Sean Nuernberger kick)

Maybe Mensa was setting up our first playoff opponent for a 15-20 yarder to the TE in these situations...Lord knows no one will be expecting us to throw to the TE soon.

Honestly, I was more impressed with Cardale's short passes than the deep balls, and I thought the TDs were good throws.

I expect us to exploit Cardale's velocity on short passes against Alabama if he can be on target and receivers continue to catch the fastballs. The time it was taking Cardale to get the ball out to the edge was unreal. Now that's were the arm strength can really be exploited.

There was one play where he faked the handoff and whipped it to WR that went for a good gain. Tie that in with the deep ball and I'm confident in Cardale. If he can execute, that's one hell of a way to stretch Bama vertically and horizontally.
