I think the reason that those majors are considered to be dumbing down of the curriculum is specifically because they are a wink and a nod toward getting the athletes eligible. I don't think offering professional sports as a major (with a sport specialization) is any more of diluting of curriculum than that of offering art or music to those interested in that career path. Does Julliard School have a diluted curriculum? Ohio State, along with the 10-15 other elite football schools, are simply the Julliards of sports.

But I still think they would need to take a core curriculum of arts, humanities, science and math just like any other major, and therein lies the rub. Some student athletes are never going to accept having to take even a peripheral academic core, and to abandon that makes the degree a total sham to the point of bringing the university's integrity into question.

Even a university as narrowly focused as Julliard requires a core liberal arts curriculum. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a university but rather a glorified trade school.

Quite true, maybe Truck Driver U could offer a football only curriculum. I don't think a football major would have kept Mr. Jones from his tweeting shenanigans.

After his time is over at tOSU Mr. Jones is going to sadly realize that a college education may be all he has to lean on to get a decent job and build towards a positive future.

Then again, McDonald's is always looking for those who are willing to work for minimum wage.

Bullshit. You take a very cynical attitidue, as if every 4 and 5 star athlete is an illiterate. You'd lose a portion of them---the portion that never wanted to (nor should have been allowed to) walk onto a college campus. Good riddance. In return, you'd have better student-athletes, fewer scandals and I'm guessing the thug shit would go down immeasurably.

I think the reality lies somewhere between you and Max's opinions. And even if things turned out closer to Max's prediction...so what?

Reducing the focus on a sport that is likely causes severe long term damage to many of it's participants probably wouldn't be the worst thing that ever happened to major universities in this country.

Well except for the SEC of course, many of those schools would likely cease to exist but I see that as a feature rather than a bug.

not McD's, man. THE BEST part-time, minimum wage job is as a BARTENDER.

where else can you make $400/night AND get to bang your clientele?
