QB Cardale '12 Gauge' Jones (B1G Champion, National Champion)

I think the leadership part is where the offense is seriously lacking. All preseason long all they've heard is "so many weapons", "ton of NFL talent", "greatest offense of all time" yadayadayada. The defense on the other hand is loaded with leaders. Joshua Perry is not going to let those guys slack off and neither is Adolphus, or Big Bear or Eli Apple or Vonn Bell. The offense has too many interchangeable parts and the continuity of the unit is not happening. I dont know why the Oline hasnt gelled before any other unit but they seem a bit in flux.

I dont want to sound even more negative but I could tell in Cardales first series when he and Jalin weren't on the same page, that there was a serious lack of cohesion and leadership by the way Cardale started yelling at Jalin. I mentioned it in the game thread that I thought it was still way too early in that game and situation to lead in that manner, in my opinion. Should have been communicating better than that and I think it was Cardale feeling the pressure of needing to produce. Earlier tonight I was watching the BiG Live show and Jerry Nardiello echoed the same sentiments that he sees the offense as "scattered" and "panicky" as if they aren't sure they are doing what they want to do. All about leading in that huddle out there and directing the offense and that lies on the QB. Cardale is supremely gifted and a great guy to be around by all accounts but some guys are just born leaders who can pull things together without a lot of hocus pocus, and that guy for this football team is most likely JT Barrett.

Just seems to be the natural progression for this team but Cardale has to be 100% engaged in case he's needed. The team and Cardale both need a rallying point for this season.
Never thought of it that way and couldn't agree more... not one time did we mention leadership when talking about our offense. No offense to CJ who will go down as one of the best all time buckeyes for what he did last year but this offense needs his leadership. If 9 units strong is our moto then we need JT to bring it together over on offense.

JT had a pick and another one that should have been picked. It's still a dead heat to me.
The almost pick went right past Corey Smith too, and if you watch to me it looks like he pulled his hand back like he wasn't sure if it was for him. If we're counting almost INT's how about the INT that Cardale almost threw off his back foot down the field that a diving opposing football player somehow couldn't come up with (Hawaii) and I know there's one more but I can't recall when (because when he did that against Hawaii I remember thinking HE DID IT AGAIN).

Here's what I say and I think this is FAIR. Start JT and you let him play for a little while to catch up to all the game reps that Cardale has had. If we want it to be fair then be fair and let JT catch up with how many total reps that CJ has had because how will we ever know if JT is going to over come him if he's not given the same opportunity. Then once JT has as many reps compare the stats because I'm very confident they'd be better.

I mentioned something to this effect in another thread, but it was a mistake for Meyer to say he was going to try to be fair. Fairness shouldn't matter, but that's part of the criteria he set forth and talked about all summer. He could easily justify whatever decision he makes by saying "because I'm the head coach and I say so."

It may not be "fair" or transparent, but he's bent over backwards trying to be equitable and he still hasn't achieved fairness in this process. He should cut out the Solomon's Judgment crap and use your authority and expertise to pick a guy.

You could say that, but you have to remember who is getting the reps with the starters in practice. JT is not getting them, Cardale is. So JT is little out of synch with the starting lineup. Give him a week with the ones in practice and see how he runs the team on Saturday.. Spielman is preaching this exact thing for JT right now.

Totally agree. It's a pretty ballsy thing to pull the guy who is getting the majority of 1st team real reps for a guy who is getting is getting the majority of the 1st team mental reps and expect him to go out and win you a game. Give him the real reps and let him get his chance as the starter... and then make a final decision.

I love UFM I really do but come on now with this "mental reps" thing... there is no replacing "doing" it when it comes to learning and growing. For example when Braxton had surgery last year and had that camera thing for him to take mental reps in the spring of 14' I thought in my head that when he came back in the fall that'd he would be rusty and behind. There is just nothing like reps against a live defense... and while I know we go against scout team's normally. I really think for one week we should make a exception and have our first teams play each other.

If we are struggling why not run up against the best defense we will see all year which is our own? Make the games seem easy as they say and it's not like we need to do this all the time. If we have this great defense as we do this year we should have a day were we go against them a little bit to really challenge our guys.

A good analogy (and to prove my man hood) is getting ready for testing for my freshman year of college ball they had the entire team do the running, jumping, and strength tests... When people were warming up with bench they were repping 135 a few times and then jumping into 225 to failure. All summer in preparation for this event I would start benching at 135, then to 185 for 1, then 225 for 1, then 275 for 1, then 315 for 1, then 365 for 1, and then BOOM drop the weight to 225 immediately and crank it out like a mad man because it felt like a feather.

Needless to say my turn came and once I hit 365 for one a senior told me to stop what I'm doing because I'm screwing my endurance up... Then they pointed at me and said you're up! The result? 21 reps of 225 (they didn't count the first 3 because they were too quick). My point being if we are up against a heavy weight (our ones) then things may slow down a bit especially for someone like JT who hasn't had a lot of reps as a 1.

This is why I don't understand people who have been firmly in one camp or the other. They've both looked equally bad these past couple of weeks. I've changed my pick from Cardale to JT simply because he seems to have better ball security but by no means do I have a "definitive guy" so to speak. Urban going with Cardale doesn't bother me in the least. Honestly I think much of the blame goes towards the rest of the offense rather than the QBs. The offensive line so far isn't in the same stratosphere it was last season despite having four returning starters. The WRs outside of Thomas have, more or less, been completely absent. Zeke can't do anything with the blocking being as poor as it currently is. JT actually looking WORSE as the game went on last week told me that the issue went deeper than just who was at QB.

I'm voting for JT too, not that my vote means anything. It's just my observation/perception while sitting in the stadium watching both play that JT plays much faster than Cardale. When JT came in for Cardale it just looked like JT was on "speed" compared to Cardale. The play developed much faster, the handoffs were quicker, and Zeke hit the hole faster (all which was important due to the overall poor blocking).

I'm still happier and more excited about our QBs than I have been any year prior. As long as they hit their stride and grow into a post-season peak (just like last year) through a series of wins, then there's little cause for concern about the quality of those wins. At the present rate it seems like MSU is one of the few times that could play poll leapfrog -- and we play them. Nah, we're in good shape. CJ12 and JT16 are deep in their own heads and pushing. Loosen up, find your humor, and have fun so that we can have fun watching. We're still the greatest show in the country, and in an odd sort of way it's silly exciting knowing that we haven't yet even scratched the potential.

I do agree that UFM is waffling and making the situation worse, but then he has a lifetime free pass from me in terms of being second-guessed. I'm just going to assume that he'll figure it out even if what we're seeing is him truly struggling with the issue and not handling it in an ideal or efficient way.

JT has proven more, but we've seen what Cardale *can* do, and that's on a different level. I'm very happy we have a few more tuneup games ahead of us.
