COLUMBUS -- The Heisman Trophy winner who could both run and throw is gone, but the redshirt freshman who can both run and throw is just warming up.

It's unfair to compare Troy Smith at the end of his career to Antonio Henton at the beginning of his, but then again, it's also difficult not to compare the two as Ohio State's quarterback battle heats up.

Being a redshirt freshman, Henton clearly entered the quarterback derby third this spring behind junior Todd Boeckman and sophomore Rob Schoenhoft. Entering Saturday's spring game, that's probably still true, but listen to quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels and you get the feeling Henton is narrowing that gap quickly.

I think it's unfair to compare ANYONE to Troy Smith. But, being Columbus and huge sports nuts that we are, that's what we're going to do. And many fans are going to complain about whoever it is who gets the starting job at quarterback, simply because he isn't Troy Smith.

You don't want to be the guy who follows the legend. You want to be the guy who follows the second guy. Except, I guess, I'd rather be Earle Bruce than John Cooper.

OSU QB Henton has impressed

The Buckeyes' elusive redshirt freshman has been compared to Heisman winner Smith.

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State coaches have been careful to quell the hype about quarterback Antonio Henton being the second coming of Troy Smith. But those who have tried to get their hands around the redshirt freshman from Georgia haven't been shy about making those comparisons.
While playing on the scout team last season, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Henton often left pass rushers feeling as if they were trying to tackle an apparition. And he was just as elusive while taking snaps with the first-string offense in a full-tilt scrimmage last week.

Troy's Gone - He's Antonio
By John Porentas Lets get something straight right now. Troy Smith is gone.
It's perfectly understandable that Buckeye fans would resist that thought. Smith beat Michigan three times, won big games against Texas and Notre Dame, beat the teams he was supposed to beat, and won the Heisman Trophy.
So when Smith left Ohio State, Buckeye fans looked at the OSU roster trying to find "the next Troy Smith". The Troy Smith du jour is currently redshirt freshman quarterback Antonio Henton.

Playing with Henton at quarterback would require the OSU offensive staff to make adjustments to the OSU offense if they decide to go with Henton next fall. "It would be very challenging," said Daniels of the possibility of putting together an offense around a redshirt freshman quarterback.
"You would have to gear the offense to what he could do and to what he feels comfortable in doing," said Daniels.

After watching all 3 QBs the battle really seems to be between Todd and Robbie. Antonio showed some flashes of greatness but the consistancy definitly isn't there yet. I would have liked to see him throw a couple balls away and on a couple plays when he escaped the pocket, I would have liked to see him throw it downfield instead of tuck it. He showed better arm strength than I remembered. I'm gonna be hard to please after being spoiled last year.

...And why are we remembering a season when a sophomore quarterback beat out a sophomore quarterback, who, in turn, got the starting position due to an injury to the first sophomore?

The eligibility isn't be compared, but rather a scenario where a more-mobile QB takes over the starting job from a less-mobile QB who was the expected starter. And keep in mind that while Smith did come in for Zwick late in the Iowa debacle due to injury, Tressel stated afterwards that he would've made the QB switch for the next game regardless.

i dunno if i would go that far. granted it is a scrimmage but the opposing team knows the plays well. real games will show a lot. none of the QBs were particularly great today but in a spring scrimmage i wouldn't expect them to be. i look for boeckman to start despite a lackluster day and then henton to be the next guy in line but thats just my thoughts. i was impressed with his ability but like troy(and yes they are 2 different players) he is looking down WRs, having trouble in his progression, and really lacked good OL play today. guess we will see what happens.

I disagree, and I agree with Jeffcat that its going to be Boeckman then Henton. I realize that Henton threw the 2 INT's and all, but he showed some sweet sparks out there on the field today. He is definitley going to be a playmaker down the road for us. I liked what I saw also because of the poor line play and the constant pressure he was under, the only real bad thing from what I saw was the horrendous INT to Schwartz. I mean there was no way in hell anyone was going to complete that pass, I really don't understand what he was looking at, but really other than that I think Antonio did a great job. Robbie on the other hand struggled the most in my opinion. He looked lost alot of times when he was in the pocket (except when he made that big run on 3rd and long), but he was constantly overthrowing and just plain missing receivers. Who knows though, only time will tell.

I very optimistic about Henton for the future, again probably not this season. But did it strike anyone with the VT on the side of the helmet and the #7 that he had Vick type scrambling skills :)

I agree, Henton showed some flashes of Troy Smith, but needs to develop his decision making skills. I think once he masters the playbook, he will be able to progress through his reads better because he has unteachable talent and is our QB of the future.
