Premier League (Official Thread)

Spurs 2 Wigan 0

That first goal by Spurs (Bale, assisted by Modric) was as beautiful as any I've seen from the team this season. So many many skills coming together at the perfect moment...

It's a shame Bale is Welsh. I'd love to see him in a World Cup.

United fans probably said the same thing about Giggs for years

What's the word on Bale for the summer ? I know he was being talked about by some of the clubs outside of England as being a possible transfer target this summer. There was nothing concrete but he was drawing a lot of interest abroad & rightly so.

I can't see Spurs willing to let him go even for the right price. Seeing as how the Modric saga went down last summer, I can't see them budging unless another team convince him & even then, I just don't see it.

Landon Donovan with his 3rd assist of the week to Darron Gibson as Everton go up 1-0 on City in the 61st minute. This could be huge for United if the scoreline holds as they're up 2-0 on Stoke and would be even with City on points, but still in 2nd on goal differential.

I'd be surprised to see him sold. From what I have read, the club is in good financial shape and should be able to at least stand pat with their top players. With Bale's combination of size, strength, pace and ball skills, he's not very replaceable for a club like Spurs. Of course, it's for those very reasons that he'd be in demand.

My impression is that Spurs are right at budget. There have been indications that they can't add players unless they make some sales, but if they do make moves it would be to put pieces around players like Bale to consolidate their place in the league and get back to playing Champions League football.

To me the most interesting thing to watch will be whether or not Harry Redknapp is called upon to manage England and if so, by whom would he be replaced?

Everton hold on to defeat City 1-0 thanks to a Darron Gibson (go figure huh ?) deflected shot dished out by Landon Donovan. City and United are now even on points at the top, however, City remain leaders on goal differential (+6).

I wonder where Everton would be if Donovan had been there all season. They use him quite well on the right wing and he seems to be a good fit for them like he was two years ago.

Spurs have signed Louis Saha.

Pienaar has been loaned to Everton
Bassong has been loaned to Wolves
Corluka has been loaned to Bayern Leverkusen
Pavlyuchenko has finally been sold to Lokomotiv

Not exactly gonna set the world on fire, but at least Pav is gone.

Spurs sold a striker who was underwhelming in Pav. Pienaar was sent back to whence he came, because he really isn't better than what Spurs have or had in the midfield. Corluka is slower than John Terry or Sol Campbell and Bassong is an unknown to me. Then in a stroke of genius, the sign former United striker Louis Saha, who will be healthy all of 4 weeks and play 3 games. He may score 5 goals in 3 games if he is on, or he could be invisible. I have to give credit to Spurs, they are making a run at the top 4 and a ECL spot. I hope they make it at the expense of Arsenal and Liverpool.

It seems there is mutual ambivalence between Bassong and the club. He hasn't seen the field much at center back in spite of the limitations of Ledley King and injuries to Dawson and Gallas.

I just don't think he is the type of player that 'Arry Redknapp like to use. He was solid while at Newcastle on what was an utterly miserable team, but something about his style leaves me guessing. I am fairly sure of one thing, Redknapp doesn't think he is Prem quality. He just doesn't seem inclined to play him, ever. Now with Nelsen coming in, I think he has seen his last days in a Spurs shirt.

If Donovan's stay is extended to the end of the season, Everton has a decent squad. Not a top of the table squad, but good enough to stick around #'s 6-10

That being said, I need to catch up on my club soccer. I've been on hiatus since the extended CL break. Mainly watching key Serie A matchups, and Milan games.
