Premier League (Official Thread)

Bert van Marwijk may be free shortly

Very shortly indeed.

People are also floating Laurent Blanc's name. Apparently he's leaving the French team after the Euros.

I'm also seeing some fans mention Klinsmann. They are on some pretty strong stuff if they think he's leaving the US anytime before the next World Cup.

Since England is pretty much float anything out there to sell papers, I read a report earlier this week linking Blanc to Manchester United (replace Sir Alex). Rumor-based media is fun (but it's just like the U.S. w/ Ohio State, Tebow, Brett Favre or LeBron).

Roberto Martinez will take a job somewhere else, that's a given. I doubt he wants to battle relegation every year (which he'll keep doing w/ the Latics).

Maybe David Moyes is content or would only leave for a Top 5 job and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be back in England someday (Spurs may be too big of a step up for his first head England job).

I'd put $10 on Rafa Benitez on a flyer (no chance, but probably good odds).

Lots of smoke right now RE: AVB to Spurs. Some places have stopped accepting bets on it.

Not too hateful. Kind of a double edged sword, you wait until the end of the Euro's, some other names may pop up but AVB may be gone. I like the signing, if it's true.

Hopefully he's a little more creative with players like Van der Vaart, Bale, and Modric (assuming they stay with the Spurs)

I didn't watch too much Chelsea under AVB (blink and you'd have missed him) but my impression is that he wanted to be more creative when he was there but the squad he had didn't allow for it. Now, there's something to be said for managing to fit the strengths of your squad, and Chelsea were certainly justified in making a change to somebody who'd to that - the trophies they won bore that out. I think AVB would be a better fit for Spurs (provided their team stays mostly intact, or they find good attacking replacements). Heck, I think he would have fit in well with the remodeled squad at Chelsea with the likes of Hazard, Hulk, Marin, etc.

I don't think he was as bad as he looked in that partial season at Chelsea. It wasn't long ago that he was winning the treble with Porto.

If it comes through, I'd be happy with his appointment. He's a risk, but I think he also comes with the highest ceiling of anybody Spurs have been realistically linked to. I'm not sure there is a better choice among managers at the Euros who would A.) become available B.) foster they style of play that Spurs is accustomed to and C.) realistically consider Spurs.

We shall see. The press were convinced that Redknapp was off to the England job for the longest time, and we saw how that ended up.

Chelsea is a very bi-polar squad, mainly because of the headcases like Terry, Torres, Drogba, Anelka.... Too many personalities, too many guys wanted their fair shake with the new manager, and it just never seemed to work out. I think with Tottenham, you've got a team who already has it's Starting XI pretty clear cut (barring transfers), and there shouldn't be the issue with "big headed" players.

I just pray Adebayor remains in the Spurs future plans.

Adebayor very much wants to remain with Spurs, and Spurs very much want him. The issue is his obscene wages at City. Spurs won't spend that much per week on a single player's wages, but Adebayor doesn't want to take too much of a cut. My understanding is that he is very charitable with his money, much of it is sent back to help people in his home country and he doesn't want to have to reduce how much he gives if he can help it.

I'm also interested in what happens with some of the current players with a new manager coming in. You'd never know it, but Giovani Dos Santos is with Spurs. He's a world-beater with a Mexico shirt on, but he couldn't get more than five minutes on the pitch under Redknapp. Hopefully a new manager will actually rotate a bit and get the best out of a player like Dos Santos. I think he has something to offer.

Similar things could be said for Steven Pienaar. He's great with Everton, but he couldn't get in the side under Redknapp. He can play any number of midefield positions, but again, the seeming unwillingness to rotate players left him on the bench or out of the team entirely.

Good England career for Drogba.

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/20876/7829038/Drogba-confirms-Shanghai-move

Considering the level of play (in China), I hope the paycheck is huge (and imagine it is). His former and current teammate in Shanghai, Nicolas Anelka, is on over $200,000 a week, so I imagine Drogba is similar.

I was hoping he would end up somewhere in the MLS...I knew there was almost no chance of that happening..but it would have been great for the league to add his talent and name to the MLS..and it would have been great for me to have a chance to see him live.

Good luck to him in China and nothing but appreciation for all he did for the Blues. Get 'em Drog!!!!!

I was reading something and didn't realize that now that ESPN lost the rights to the Barclays Premier League in the U.K., they can now close their channel (in the future), if they wanted to.

It's their business and I have no idea how much money they may be making or losing on that channel (in the U.K.).

Worldwide Leader indeed.

Spurs are supposedly in on signing midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. If he comes to Spurs, it seems like yet another indication that Modric will finally be sold, perhaps to Real Madrid.

AVB is supposedly still in the mix to the the next manager. Word is that he's the pick, but he's still either under contract or a non-compete agreement until July 1.

The deal for Vertonghen still isn't wrapped up. A fee has been agreed to with Ajax, terms have been reached between Spurs and the player, but word is that Ajax are unhappy about extracting a lower transfer fee and are looking to have the player reduce his cut of the payout. Vertonghen has supposedly reiterated his stance that if Ajax won't play ball, he'll simply leave on a free transfer in a year. Spurs should end up with their man, but theres a bit of acrimony creeping into the deal that's out of their hands.

I've also read some tidbits about interest between Spurs and Daniel Sturridge.

AVB worked under a Director of Football at Porto. So there wouldn't be that much of a run-in w/ Daniel Levy, as Harry had.

AVB also wouldn't have to deal w/ an "old guard" perhaps undermining him like he did w/ Chelsea (Lampard, Terry, Drogba, etc.).

I mean, AVB is 2/9 at this point, w/ Blanc second at 5-1 in betting.

Bale Commits

Good for Gareth Bale.

There was a time that Spurs were going to send him out on loan...and then he blew up.

And he wouldn't commit unless he knew who the new manager was

Tottenham ace Gareth Bale has penned a new contract at White Hart Lane to keep him at the club until 2016 and silence speculation over his future.

Rumours surrounding the Wales international have again been rife this summer, with Barcelona and Real Madrid among the clubs thought to have the 22-year-old on their radar.

...Now if he'll just play from a wider position and use his pace a bit more instead of crowding the center. Hopefully that will change with a manager that introduces tactics more nuanced than "fucking run 'round a bit."
