Post 23 Season tOSU Coaching Changes

I wonder if Day would bring in a Co- OC who is more seasoned to work with Hartline. Similar to what he did with Hafley and Mattison. Or even when Wilson was here. Don’t see how it could hurt. The Veteran calls the plays and Hartline continues to learn on the job

Agree. He has to find someone like Wilson to work with Hartline and take over playcalling even if it's only at times during the game when Day deals with something else. I don't know a ton about OCs and QB coaches but here's what I found.

Grubb (Washing QB/OC) would be great but I doubt he leaves Deboer for a lateral move. Other considerations I looked up:

Willy Korn has been big at CCU and Liberty.
Tim Cramsey from Memphis.
MIKE BLOESCH from Cal (QB/OL/OC)
-----
Darrell Bevell from Dolphins (QB/Passing game coordinator)
Klint Kubiak from SF (Passing Game specialist, former OC and QB coach)
Jerrod Johnson from Houstom (QB coach)

JTB is in his first year as Assistant QB coach at the Lions. It'll be interesting to follow his career and see how he does.

I think my issue is, the back ups seem ill equipped to play. We don’t have the full playbook when they come in and I believe Dennis is the one who is working the most with them. Day worked with McCord but I think we saw McCord max out with the QB he can be. I don’t think there was much else he could do mentally to become the QB that Day is accustomed to having.

I think we're overestimating what LK, who was probably scout team QB and never got backup reps until bowl prep, was capable of as a freshman. He's athletic but not a freak like Pryor/Miller and he wasn't consistent with ball placement, which most freshman aren't. His ability to call out blitzes, hot routes, blocking wasn't there either.

OSU'S offense had the same issues most of the year, especially against aggressive teams. This was like playing PSU without MHJr, a starting caliber QB, and reshuffled OL.

Dennis is just the odd man out in my mind. You can replace Frye, I won't mind one way or the other, but Jones wasn't great as a guard and it looks like Vimakhi was kept around because they needed bodies.

I've never really understood the people who don't like Dennis. The QB recruiting and play has been good until this year where things obviously went sideways.

It's not a matter of "liking" anyone.
It's well known Day mentors the #1 QB. That leaves Corey with the backups ... and... obviously not prepared.
McCord had 2 years and not developed. Brown doesn't look developed. Kienholz comes in and looks like a rusty HS kid.

We also need a dedicated playcaller, and Corey's spot is the obvious choice to free up.
He has the air of being Zach Smith without the toxic wife. That's enough to not be a distraction, but is it really enough to suck up a valuable coach spot?
Keep him around as an analyst to keep Urban happy, for all i care.
We need his spot for an playcaller and a capable QB coach, unless Day is going to do the whole room (once he gives up playcalling).

We know that Gene Smith is not going to make any moves between now and his retirement in January. So, if you're the new AD, what do you do? Who do you fire, who do you hire? Why?

Hint, I don't have a clue. Well, maybe, I mean really, Parker Phleming. Would you hire a coach with a name like that? And special teams weren't special. But what else would you do?

Not on Mariotti. Day told him to tone it down when Meyer left. This falls on Day. If it were up to Mariotti, he would revert back to Navy Seal type training when Meyer was here. Day has softened the program too much. Meyer was extreme, borderline insane. Day is the opposite. Day is still in charge of Mariotti.

Dennis= kick rocks
Fleming= kick rocks
Frye= kick rocks

If Ryan Day is serious about getting this program back on track, these guys can not/should not be on staff.

Parker Phlegming
Justin Frye
Corey Dennis
Mickey Marotti
LJ Sr.

If more than 1 or 2 of those guys are back next fall, this program is heading for a nosedive. Phlegming cannot return. Dennis and Frye are just behind him. Marotti and LJ Sr. Probably should be moved on from.

I don't know who you replace them with because I don't follow CFB as closely as I once did, but it ain't my job to find them. You can't tell me the Ohio State money cannon can't reel in better coaches than these guys.

I agree with the first three, but Mickey Marotti and LJ Sr. have to stay. In the case of LJ Sr., at least for one more year. If LJ Sr. is let go this year, JT definately goes to the draft and Eddrick Houston might transfer in the Spring. Not to mention, I don’t think Tyliek Williams would have come back if LJ was being let go. But I do agree, a replacement/transition plan needs to be in place for after this season.

As far as Marotti, I vehemently disagree. I’m not going to criticize or call for the job of a man who developed physical specimen’s like Zeke, the Bosa’s, Chase Young, Marv, and Michael Thomas, among others. He is still highly respected among coaches and players and our players consistently test the highest at the combine in their position groups. Plenty of NFL teams rave about how our players come to league ready to play from a physical standpoint and you have to give him credit for that. I’m sure he needs to modernize/tweak his practices like everyone in this ever evolving sport to continue to stay on top, but he definately hasn’t lost a step in my opinion and can’t possibly be blamed for any player injuries.

My reasoning for Mick is simple: We have seen a slow deterioration in the trenches with this team to the point that Mizzou is frickin' manhandling us. It hasn't been overnight, they've been in decline for 2-3 years. We get pushed around too much for a supposed elite program. Not to mention the injuries. A coach can have been great and slipped; sometimes it's just time to move on. I feel like that's where we are.

And again, folks need to go back and read what the Bosa brothers said.

There's a major college football coaches conference coming up next week, Birm implied that Day is going to go there and beg someone else to hire the bums on his staff he doesn't want anymore, and that Ohio State's coaching moves (at least announcements) likely won't happen until after he has secured landing spots for his current guys.

Alex Gleitman says he sees Ohio state making 3 maybe 4 moves on their staff soon. Says something within the next 24-48 hours. Also says theirs a “surprise”.

Also from the 11W forum, Birm is adamant that LJ Sr is back next year and that Coach Mick isn’t going anywhere, but...

Austin Ward on Jason Taylor:

We'll see what happens. I was reliably told there had been contact and contract parameters discussed. I can't speak to Taylor's career goals or motivation, so I don't know if a two-DL-coach plan for a year would work for him or not. But he's also expected to be pursued by LSU, so I don't imagine it's in Ohio State's best interests to delay.

They idea that has been talked about to Austin is that Taylor would come is as a 2nd DL coach with the understanding that this is LJs final year.

Laurinaitis would stay as a GA for one more season and then be promoted after next season should everything go as planned.
