Post 23 Season tOSU Coaching Changes

  • A lot of speculation going on in various threads, so I thought it would be good to start a thread for all of us BP coaches and thoughts on coaching changes.

I’m not going to speculate on who may be trending towards becoming a coach here, but just my thoughts on who may be/should be on there way out.

    Time to move on:
Parker Fleming - This is just a no brainer

Larry Johnson - Appreciate all Larry has done here, but the recruiting and the line play have plummeted the last couple years and just not what they need to be.

Mickey Marotti - Too many injuries. Guys getting pushed around in the trenches. Like LJ the game has passed him by.

    Trending out the door:
Corey Dennis- is he really the guy for this role, I don’t know. Rumored to be getting replaced.

Justin Frye - I had high hopes here when Frye was brought in. I’m hoping he can turn things around next season.

Fleming should’ve been gone yesterday. There’s zero reason to keep him right now and you’re missing out on valuable last minute opportunity for Laurinaitis to go out on visits.

I don’t think Dennis will go. Fitch is the actual QB coach. Dennis just has the title because he’s a better recruiter. Day’s not going to be open about exploiting the rules in that regard, but I think that’s the truth.

Being a good guy is going to cost day in this recruiting cycle and future..

LJSr - HoF coach but he's done , he needs to retire, especially if Houston flips..
Flemming - the moment Scott decommitted should have been the last straw and it announced he's leaving
Marotti - listed above very well. Old antiquated methods and have cost us - time to go it was a good run
No way he’s replaced without Urbs approval.
Dennis - Last I checked Urbs was not Day's boss, or even employed in any capacity by the University - pretty clear QB development not good, if its "Fitch" much like Joe Daniels back in the day... Fitch needs to go as well....

Frye - I got nothing here... clearly not getting it done recruiting, coaching is marginal....

and I'll add a name to the list
Bailey - clearly TEs took a step back in terms of blocking .... maybe another year but if Day is gonna count on his TEs blocking ... I dont have much hope.....

I'm inclined to agree, although I'd like to see more from Frye. The rest is not quite Withers & Co., but isn't that far off. Would it not be unreasonable to assume that just like tOSU should be able to bring in 5-star recruits we should be able to bring in stud young coaches instead of re-treads and re-purposed 2-star guys? We have a QB coach who's never played QB and was a DB at GA Tech, but happens to be Urban's son in-law. Do any of us reasonably think he's coaching at Ohio State, otherwise? I think we saw the diminishing returns this season and I don't see how it gets any better. I could've listened to Day and then "coached" Haskins, Fields, and Stroud. Similarly, Bailey's bounced around and never been a tight end.

I've felt for a while that a major issue with Day is he thinks he's the smartest guy in the room.

Surrounding yourself with brand new inexperienced coaches will make that a self-fulfilling prophecy.

IMO Bailey, Dennis, Fleming and even Hartline to a point are too inexperienced to get their coaching starts at a place like OSU..Day too for that matter.

I think you can have one or two (at most) young hungry go getter recruiters who grow into their jobs as assistants, but OSU has too many..

Some of whom don't even have recruiting chops

That's not to say we need anymore non-recruters..like Knowles either. A better mix would be good.

You serious? QB development not good? No my man, just McCord wasn’t good enough.

Barrett, Haskins, Fields, Stroud… McCord. One of these things is not like the other 4.

Yup. Guess who the QB coach was for those. Except for McCord the Primary coach has been Ryan Day.

I think you are mistaking my criticism of Dennis as criticism of Day as a QB coach. It’s been said Day works with the Starter and Dennis does the rest. Well, McCord has had 3 years of tutorage with Dennis, unlike Stroud, Fields, Haskins and the end of Barrett’s career.

Day seems to be great QBs coach but unfortunately that’s not his job title.

So Dennis has been in the QB room since 2020, overseeing and helping the development of Fields and Stroud. We all know McCord has nowhere near the talent of those 2, so why pin McCords in-game struggles against Dennis who has a solid track record? Especially If Brown or Lincoln balls out in this bowl or next year - it completely nukes your argument.

We will agree to disagree on Dennis's ability to coach QBs .... I really hope I'm wrong.
