FSU suspends five receivers after campus fight

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Five Florida State wide receivers will miss Saturday night's homecoming game against Boston College for their roles in a midweek campus fight, coach Bobby Bowden said Friday.

Taiwan Easterling, Bert Reed, Corey Surrency, Cameron Wade and Richard Goodman will sit Saturday's crucial Atlantic Coast Conference contest.

"The police report has not been concluded but from the information that I have gathered, I'm suspending five players who were apparently involved," Bowden said.

Maj. James Russell of the Florida State University Police Department said Bowden's decision was based on independent information obtained by the coach and that the department's investigation was going forward.
Russell had earlier said the melee apparently stemmed from bad blood between some of the athletes and members of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

No charges have been announced by campus police, who are trying to find out who threw a chair that injured a female bystander during Wednesday's altercation.

Former Miami (Oh.) player sentenced

HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) -- A former Miami of Ohio football player has been sentenced to 60 days in jail, followed by 120 days of house arrest and five years of probation for burglarizing a woman's dorm room.

Twenty-one-year-old Zachary Marshall of Mason was convicted last month and will get credit for 36 days he's already served. Judge Michael Sage of Butler County Common Pleas Court set the sentence Wednesday.

Marshall, a former state wrestling champion, was found guilty of entering an unlocked dorm room on the campus in Oxford in May. Marshall's lawyer, Robert Peeler, said it was an innocent mistake while his client was sleep-deprived, drunk and confused about the layout of the dormitory where he had been living for only two days.

GATOR QUARTERBACK CAM NEWTON ARRESTED
FOR BURGLARY AND OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE

:smash: :smash: :smash: :smash:

Bad news for the Gators today, as University of Florida police confirmed that backup quarterback Cam Newton was arrested Friday afternoon on
three felony charges relating to a stolen laptop computer:

  • Second degree burglary
  • Third degree larceny (theft greater than $300 but less than $5,000)
  • And second degree obstructing justice.
The Gators (9-1) face The Citadel Saturday in the final home game of the
season, but football spokesman Steve McClain said Newton, who has
thrown two passes this year, has been suspended.

Damn. Maybe Ryan Perrilloux can help him out on a good school.

Genius. Pure genius. Throwing the computer out the window will throw the law off every time. :smash:

Charleston Southern University has confirmed that four student-athletes, one an active football player, were arrested Monday night in connection with last week's armed robbery and abduction from the school's campus.
North Charleston police said a bail hearing for the students on charges of armed robbery and kidnapping was expected at 2:30 p.m. today. Police identified the suspects as:
? Zachery Hillery, 20, of Sanford, Fla.

? Samuel Baptiste, 20, of Naples, Fla.

? T.J. Latimore, 19, of Cleveland

? Ronald Jay Baldner, 19, of Crystal River, Fla.
The four are accused of a robbery that began in the parking lot outside the men's dorms on Nov. 11. A female student and a male acquaintance were in a car about 7:45 p.m., waiting for the car's owner to get out of class, when two men approached.
One wore a mask and the other brandished a gun. The robbers got in the back seat, pointed a gun to the back of the male student's head and told him to drive.
The men made him drive to the nearby Atlantic Palms apartments, where the robbers took the $30 or so in cash they had, then ran away. No one was injured.
Spencer Pryor, North Charleston police public information officer, said that all four suspects are charged as part of an alleged scheme, though witnesses reported seeing only two robbers. They all listed the school's campus as their local address.
Charleston Southern said that all four were involved in the school's football program, though only one was an active member of the team at the time of the incident. They have been suspended pending the outcome of the case, said Doug Dickerson, director of public relations, in a release.
Latimore, a running back, has played in recent games. An online roster lists Hillery as a defensive lineman and Baldner as a wide receiver. Baptiste is not mentioned.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Two Florida State freshman wide receivers have been arrested on misdemeanor battery charges stemming from a fight in the student union two weeks ago.
University officials say 20-year-olds Bert Reed and Cameron Wade turned themselves in Wednesday at the Leon County Jail and were released after posting bond. They and three other players who participated in the fight were suspended for Florida State's last game against Boston College. No suspensions have been announced for Saturday's game against Florida.
Campus police still are investigating the Nov. 12 fight between football players and fraternity members.

UC starting DE, Lamonte Nelms, arrested after bar fight.

A University of Cincinnati football player pleaded not guilty in Hamilton County Municipal Court Monday to charges that he was unruly at a downtown bar early Sunday morning.

Lamonte Nelms, 22, a starting senior defensive end from Ravenna, Ohio, was arrested on charges of criminal trespassing and resisting arrest, according to Cincinnati police.
A report said Nelms was unruly at The Lodge, a downtown restaurant and bar, and was escorted out.
Nelms is accused of using a side entrance to sneak back into the East 7th Street bar, the report said. When employees tried to get Nelms to leave again, he ?started fighting with bar employees,? the report said.
Police were called and Nelms wouldn?t comply with orders, refusing to put his hands behind his back, the report said.

Nelms is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 5.

A UC sports department spokesman said the school was gathering information about the incident.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)?The Penn State senior who plays the Nittany Lion mascot was arrested on a DUI charge and his status for the Rose Bowl is in doubt, police and school officials said.
James Sheep was pulled over on campus around 3:15 a.m. on Nov. 22, hours before Penn State?s 49-18 win over Michigan State, University Police Capt. Bill Moerschbacher said Monday. The officer who made the stop saw that the vehicle was overloaded, with passengers piled onto each other and blocking the driver?s view.
After determining that Sheep had been drinking, the officer administered sobriety tests and took him to the hospital for blood tests, Moerschbacher said. He was later charged with DUI and summary traffic violations.
