Nebraska LB Banderas faces felony charges for stealing seven bicycles

Nebraska linebacker Josh Banderas (52) defends on a reception by UCLA running back Paul Perkins (24) during the Sept. 14 game at Memorial Stadium. Banderas is playing different linebacker positions this spring.

The start of the college football season might not get here soon enough for Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini. Last week it was reported lineman Alex Lewis had a motion rejected by a Colorado court for a reduced sentence. Today another report comes out saying linebacker Josh Banderas is facing charges for helping to steal a total of seven bicycles from a bike rack.

According to the Lincoln Journal Star, Banderas and his bicycle-stealing accomplice Lucas Keifer, a member of the Nebraska track and field team, were allegedly witnessed clipping bike locks with a bolt cutter and loading the bicycles onto a truck. Keifer was the driver of the truck that was later pulled over by police. The two were taken to jail and released on Tuesday on $3,500 bond. A court date of June 17 has been set for each.

Cal’s Damariay Drew facing felony charges after punching man, kicking dog

The latest to find himself in the legal crosshairs is Cal’s Damariay Drew, who was charged this past Monday following an incident earlier this month. Specifically, the charges against the safety are battery with serious bodily injury and inflicting great bodily injury in the commission of a felony.

A $100,000 bond was posted for Drew Saturday, one day after his arrest.

As for the details of the incident that led to the arrest and charges, here’s the Contra Costa Times‘ account:

During an afternoon fundraiser May 4 at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house at 2722 Bancroft Way, Drew and the victim “exchanged words,” according to a sworn affidavit from Berkeley police Sgt. Peter Hong. The victim had his dog, a 20-pound Jack Russell terrier mix, with him.

“The victim said Drew kicked the dog. Drew said the dog had bit him,” Hong wrote in the affidavit. The victim sought medical attention, then filed a report with police Tuesday, according to a Berkeley police spokeswoman.

As a result of the charges, head coach Sonny Dykes has indefinitely suspended Drew from the football program.

A story that had already hurtled past heartbreaking has taken an abrupt turn toward the horrific.

Last weekend, now-former Rutgers quarterback Philip Nelson was arrested in connection to what was reportedly a vicious assault outside of a Mankato, Minn., bar. Nelson was ultimately charged with first- and third-degree assault in an incident that left the victim, former Div. II football player Isaac Kolstad, hospitalized and fighting for his life.
.
.
Kolstad is currently on life support after undergoing surgery Tuesday to relieve pressure on his brain, three days after allegedly being repeatedly kicked in the head by Nelson and another man who has been charged as well. “A significant amount of his brain tissue that was no longer viable [was] removed,” the family’s statement read, while also confirming Kolstad is not able to breathe on his own. He underwent a tracheotomy Friday because of the damage to his lungs.

Kolstad is in a medically-induced coma and listed in critical condition.

From the family’s statement:

“The swelling in Isaac’s brain remains significant. Isaac’s lungs also sustained severe injury, resulting in the inability to breathe on his own. He also sustained a lack of oxygen to his brain.

“Isaac’s care team of neurosurgeons, physicians, nurses, therapists and others are doing everything they possibly can each day to keep Isaac alive and fighting. We are blessed to have Mayo Clinic care so close to home for Isaac. There is no doubt in our minds he is receiving the very best care available.”
.
.
The 24-year-old Kolstad is married and has a young daughter.

While Kolstad lays in a hospital fighting for his life, Nelson is free on a $20,000 bond.
