ESPN sues Notre Dame over police records

ESPN has filed a lawsuit against University of Notre Dame, alleging the school is violating Indiana's public record laws by withholding police incident reports about possible campus crimes involving certain student-athletes.

The lawsuit filed Jan. 15 on behalf of ESPN and its reporter Paula Lavigne says state Public Access Counselor Luke Britt has twice issued advisory opinions stating the university is subject to Indiana's public records law. The lawsuit and opinions don't specify what incident reports ESPN is seeking or which athletes may have been involved.

In his first opinion on Oct. 31, Britt said that while the university is private, Notre Dame Security Police Department is a public law enforcement agency subject to public records laws. He acknowledged that his view may be inconsistent with past opinions from other public access counselors, but that it wasn't inconsistent with Indiana's public records law.

And earlier this month, he wrote that Notre Dame and other that private universities in Indiana that have professional police forces should follow the state's public records laws despite being private institutions. He also noted that his October opinion "is not compulsory."

Notre Dame has argued that it believes it is complying with state law, saying that three previous advisory opinions had agreed with the university that its police department and those of other private colleges and universities in Indiana are not public agencies.

Michigan State Macgarrett Kings Jr, who received a DUI last year that qualified under Michigan's "super drunk" laws yet didn't miss any time, gets hit with disorderly conduct and obstructing, resisting, hindering or assaulting a police officer.

I think Dantonio will be backed into a corner and suspend him for the first series of the season opener.

Well, since he was suspended for most of spring football a year ago for his first arrest in April of last year, he'll now be suspended for all of spring ball this time since he was arrested in early March this time. That'll teach him...

Mich. St. indefinitely suspends RB Delton Williams

As it turns out, Michigan’s not the only Big Ten football program in the state with players running afoul of the law.

Early Tuesday afternoon, Michigan State confirmed in a statement from head coach Mark Dantonio that running back Delton Williams has been indefinitely suspended from all team-related activities. No reason for the suspension was given.

However, there are reports making the rounds that Williams was arrested late Monday night after allegedly brandishing a firearm during what was described as a “road-rage incident.” Williams was taken into custody shortly after the MSU Police Department issued an alert for “a black male” driving “a blue or black Impala” who was seen “displaying a gun from [a] vehicle” on a campus road.

.
Williams was third on the Spartans last season with 316 rushing yards and five touchdowns. With leading rusher Jeremy Langford‘s departure for the NFL, Williams has been expected to be a significant part of replacing the lost production.

‘Bama DT Jonathan Taylor again arrested for domestic violence

jonathan-taylor-mugshot.png

After an alleged domestic violence incident led to his dismissal at Georgia last July, Jonathan Taylor signed with Alabama in January as one of Nick Saban‘s second-chance signees. Less than three months later, Taylor is making his new head coach look rather foolish and/or naïve.
.
.
At this moment, details of what led to the defensive tackle’s arrest have not been released. Taylor remains in jail in lieu of a pair of $500 bonds.

Taylor has been participating with his new Tide teammates in spring practice, even as his initial signing caused enough of a controversy that the school felt the need to address it in a statement. It would seem unlikely that Saban would allow the lineman to remain on his squad, not with two domestic violence arrests in less than a year littering his record, the first of which is still pending in the state of Georgia. Additionally, Taylor was one of four UGA players arrested last March on theft by deception charges.
.
.
Late Friday night, defensive back Geno Smith was arrested for driving under the influence. It was the senior’s second drunk-driving arrest in less than two years, prompting him to issue a public apology on Twitter.
