Nebraska is a Volleyball school
My apologies for making another thread concerning Nebraska. On HuskerBoard there is a poll wherein Husker fans are choosing what they would do if they were in the shoes of recruit Bubba Starling, who was selected #5 overall by Kansas City in the MLB draft this year. Starling is a five-tool OF prospect, and was recruited by Nebraska to play QB.

Your options are either to take the money the Royals are offering you or to accept Nebraska's scholarship and play both football and baseball in Lincoln. Which would you choose?

NOTE: The poll options are, verbatim, the options on the Husker forum, not mine.

EDIT - current offer from the Royals is reputed to be around $8 million (signing bonus) and a comparable contract for the #5 overall pick.

You will not find a more pro-Nebraska "rah-rah" kool-aid drinker than me. But even I voted for the money in this poll. This has nothing to do with Nebraska. It has everything to do with setting yourself and your family up for life by signing this contract. And if it doesn't work out, come back to Lincoln and run the offense while you get your education. We'd welcome him with open arms.

I thought there might be a difference in those polls. :p

Ultimately, college is for preparing someone for a career. Seems to me that the factors to consider are current earning potential, earning potential post-college, and risk of losing that potential to injury, performance, or other factor. I'd recommend taking the money in this case, looking for some good and well-grounded mentors to help with the transition, and catching up with a strong education along the way.

If you actually put the money in front of me, it would probably be a much tougher decision, but I just think that an education is something that can't be passed up. He'll make his money down the line, but he'll be a better person if he goes to school. It's nice to think this in theory, but if you put that money on the table, I'm not sure if I'd hold the same ideals.

from your link, I think we should be sending some NCAA investigators Nebraska's way. Apparently 8 mill is nothing compared to how the state of Nebraska "takes care" of their football players. :lol:

Go play baseball. If he's lucky he'll end up like Joe Mauer, make millions of dollars as an MLB player and never take another snap or the beating that comes with it.

If baseball doesn't work out, he can always come back and play football. The college game is pretty kind to QBs who play a bit of minor league baseball and then return to football a little older and more mature - see also Brandon Weeden, Chris Weinke, and to a lesser extent, our own Joe Bauserman.

What he should definitely not do is half-ass his decision or try to do both like Drew Henson. He went back and forth, never really decided and never really succeeded at either sport. The only guys who can pull off the two-sport thing are the freak athletes who don't play highly specialized positions like pitcher and/or quarterback... guys like Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders and Brian Jordan.
