Pittsburgh Penguins (Official Thread)

What. A. Game. Pens win 7-6 in OT at Montreal. If you want a perfect definition of what a back-and-forth game is like, this was it. Pittsburgh was down 2-1, then up 4-2, then down 5-4, then up 6-5 & then headed to OT tied at 6-6. Brandon Sutter the hero not even a minute into the extra session. Very entertaining game from a neutral perspective.

Calgary Flames trade Jarome Iginla to Pittsburgh Penguins - NHL.com

In a shocking turn of events on a wild Thursday morning, the Calgary Flames announced that they've traded franchise icon Jarome Iginla to the Penguins for Pittsburgh's first-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the rights to unsigned draft choice Kenneth Agostino and unsigned draft choice Ben Hanowski.

Throughout much of Wednesday night, reports from numerous media outlets had Iginla being traded to Boston, but the Flames announced the deal with Pittsburgh at 1:30 a.m. ET Thursday, not long after their 4-3 home victory against Colorado.

It is the third major deal in the past 72 hours by Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero. On Monday, he obtained gritty veteran forward Brenden Morrow from the Dallas Stars for prospect Joe Morrow and a draft pick. Less than 24 hours later, he plucked veteran defenseman Douglas Murray from San Jose for two second-round picks. Now he has bagged Iginla, the prize of this year's trade market

Pittsburgh are definitely not messing around this season. Thoughts on this, Pens fans ?

The real question now, is where do they put Iginla ? I'm thinking Bylsma might opt put him on the first line with Crosby & Kunitz and drop Dupuis down. Those three have been great together this season, but Malkin & Neal haven't really found that other forward to go with them this season, while Kunitz was that guy for them last season. Dupuis is probably going to be the odd man out, but who really cares with those riches of forwards. Scary.

How could you not like it ? Especially since Boston offered a better deal,
yet Iginla had the choice so he went to Pittsburgh.

They haven't yet said where he'll play but since he played on Crosby's line
on the olympic team, I would think he could fit there. Come playoff time, I'd certainly rather see him on the top line instead of Dupuis.

The trades are nice but I'm much happier with the nine goals allowed in
the last nine games. You can't win in the playoffs if you can't play defense.

Wouldn't be surprised if Iginla played on the line with Neal until Malkin returns, but you'd also have to think that they put him with Crosby. It's a good problem.

This could be Shero's best move on a long list of good moves.

Forgot he played with Crosby at the '10 Olympics. That would make sense, since he's got some experience playing with him. I've been looking up what some of the Pittsburgh guys have thought about it & one interesting lineup I saw mentioned was putting him with Malkin and moving Neal to the left. The guy mentioned something like Bylsma doesn't want to break up the Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis line because they've been playing so well together all season. It might've been just pure speculation, but interesting nonetheless. We won't really know til Saturday when he plays his first game.

Just mentioned above that's what one of the media guys saw happening. I don't really see it as a issue at all, because wherever they put him, I'm sure it will be successful. Just shows you how much leverage Iginla had in Calgary, that he was able to convince the team to send him where he wanted to go, rather than getting the better return like what Boston was offering. Apparently the two prospects you guys gave up weren't even considered in the top ten prospects they had.

Nope, not top 10 prospects and they aren't even signed prospects. I don't think any Pens fans were really expecting them to make an impact at the NHL level. And if they did, it would be a pleasant surprise. They're college players who aren't NHL-ready. The first round pick was the most valuable piece going to Calgary, and it's going to be very late.

What a steal. I wonder if he will re-sign though. I know the 1st rounder Boston was giving up was conditional based on Iginla re-signing, but I don't believe this one is, no ? Just saw they activated Malkin today as he will be playing tonight & sent Bennett down. This is gearing up to be one scary team to face.

I think Iginla said he'd like to re-sign wherever he was traded. Pens might have to shed some salary for that to happen. I'm not even going to speculate on who, because it could be anyone not named Crosby, Letang, Neal or Fleury. I'm not even including Letang.. although it would be idiotic to trade Letang to accommodate an aging player like Iginla.

He's probably going to have to take a pay cut if he wants to play anywhere good regardless. I was just curious because the 1st rounder Boston offered was conditional upon that & didn't think the Pittsburgh one was. Interesting. I guess there's a few people saying he is going to be playing with Malkin & Neal now. Sounds like that is the original plan, but if that works out, I don't think they can be beat. Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis line has been the best in hockey all season & if Neal-Malkin-Iginla could rival that, that would just be unfair.

I like how I said I wasn't including Letang after I included Letang. I meant to say Crosby, Malkin, Neal or Fleury.

Crosby takes a puck to the face and out for the game (at the least). Paul Martin is out six weeks.

Still win 2-0 against the Isles & extend the win streak to 15. Iginla played with Malkin & Neal. Kunitz got ejected & will face a disciplinary hearing, but I really can't see him getting suspended for that. It's not like he blatantly checked the guy into the boards as he was trying to get position on the puck. Knowing how Shanahan has been running the disciplinary show, anything is possible though.
