PF Othello Hunter (Maccabi Tel Aviv BC)

SI

All-Glue Team

Othello Hunter, 6-9, Jr., F, Ohio State

What, you didn't know Ohio State had another big guy besides Greg Oden? If you're a Big Ten coach who has had to scout the Buckeyes, you certainly know about Hunter, who gives Ohio State a physical presence that perfectly complements Oden inside.
This is only Hunter's fourth year of organized basketball, so his offense is behind his defense (he is averaging just 6.7 points per game). Still, his 5.3 rebounds per game is extremely impressive for a guy who is playing less than 19 minutes a night. He is also making 58.1 percent of his field goals and 74.5 percent of his free throws.
When opposing teams try to double- and triple-team Oden, Hunter can give the Buckeyes a lift, such as when he contributed 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks in a Jan. 2 win over Indiana. A transfer from Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Hunter specializes in defending the post and working the defensive glass. Those skills will come in especially handy during the NCAA tournament when Oden goes to the bench. "Guys don't know me," Hunter has said. "They think, 'Well, he's just another basketball player so we'll double Greg and leave him open.'" Sorry to let the secret out, Othello, but Glue Guys deserve to be known, too.

I agree, this kid works on his shot a ton, and you can tell from his free throw stroke how pure his shot is...I am amazed everytime I see him shoot a free throw...

So true...watching him drill that three from the wing last game with a guy in his face...nice stroke. This guy has tremendous upside and has tons of athleticism. Not to mention, he's probably the best scrapper on this team. I love his hustle up and down the floor. For a guy I didn't expect much out of this year, he's sure been a great suprise.

Exactally and his development will allow us to defend teams like Florida who dominate teams inside with Noah and Horford, and will also allow us to dominate on the inside if Hunter and Oden are both playing good games.

I think O's greatest contribution is his agressive nature and tenacity. He's not the kind of brute who gets stupid personal fouls. Instead he is a smart yet physical player who gets in the right place at the right time. With him and Oden underneath it is hard to develope an inside game. While some of you mention Hunter's preceived ability to get more points I think he is fine in his current role. Usually we don't need another scoring threat. I think he is a great compliment to this team if he just fights down in the trenches for the 2nd chance points and provides solid D.

On a side note, I think it is a shame Terwilliger never ammounted to more. When he does sub in I think he needs more time to get in his rythem. He is so inconsistent--sometimes he plays great D and pushes the issue on the offensive end but other times he is too quick to shoot an outside shot and makes stupid fouls.

If Oden comes back next year I think we will have one of the best front courts in the nation.

Obviously Oden would make any frontcourt great but I think someone like Othello doesn't just fill a role but vastly improves the team. He and Oden seem to fill dissimilar roles and I think that combination (and a year of experience) will make them dominant beyond our expectations.

Eight role players to watch in Sweet 16

3. Othello Hunter, Ohio State: If Pearl has any control over Thursday evening's clash with Ohio State, he'll have the final score in the 90s, with Greg Oden watching from the sidelines, ridden with foul trouble from the get-go. As was the case in the Xavier game, the Buckeyes may be forced to win a few games during this tournament without their All-Everything freshman in the game down the stretch. Whereas Ron Lewis and Mike Conley, Jr. stole the headlines Sunday morning after the Buckeyes' heroic comeback win against their in-state rivals, the reserve big men on Ohio State deserve praise as well. Hunter, who averaged 6.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game this season, could see extensive playing time over the remainder of this tournament if the Buckeyes' super frosh finds himself in foul trouble yet again. With the way Tennessee runs Mr. Oden may need a few more breathers than usual.
