Ohio State coach Thad Matta told Othello Hunter that his biggest adjustment from junior college to major-college basketball would be in his head.
"You can be good in basketball," Hunter recalled Matta telling him, but to be good at this level, "you've got to be tough."
Forging that steel will into young players such as Hunter was behind Matta's decision to take his Buckeyes to North Carolina and Florida early in the season.
"This is his fourth year of organized basketball," Matta said. "You think back early on, he was a little shell-shocked at North Carolina. We go to Florida and I think he kind of got caught up in it.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
That was some shadow Othello Hunter played in last season. Seven feet in real life, Greg Oden loomed much larger to opponents, and everyone on his side benefited.
A man of few words, Hunter was asked to do only a few things for the Ohio State men's basketball team. With Oden gone, he is expected to do more this season. He believes he's capable.
"I think people are going to be pretty surprised what I can do," Hunter said.
And what's that?
"Everything."

Othello's D: OSU's Othello Hunter has played very well in the early going this season, and against Syracuse really stood out on the defensive end of the court. Hunter registered two blocked shots and made things tough for the Orange down low.

"Othello played great. He changed shots in there. He's long and athletic. He's a shot blocker and he changed a lot of shots for us," said OSU point guard Jamar Butler.
"I thought he was pretty good, I really did," said OSU Head Coach Thad Matta of Hunter's defense against Syracuse.
"I think that just his activity and he seemed to be a little bit of everywhere. He and Kosta did a good job of affecting their high-lows, that sort of thing. He has to do that for us for us to have a chance," Matta said.
Butler credited OSU's defensive effort as a key to OSU's win.
"Great defense leads to offense. I think we did pretty good defensively tonight," said Butler.
"We kept it packed in and made them take tough shots. I think we did a good job of that."
