Coach Thad Matta said after the game Saturday that Jared Sullinger would not play in a game until he was able to practice with the team for a day and then be evaluated the next day to see how his back handled the rigors of the practice.

Matta did not say on his call-in show on WBNS radio tonight if Sullinger practiced today. He did mention that Sullinger was "working out" after practice, while the radio show was in progress.

Ohio State's next game is Wednesday night against South Carolina-Upstate in Value City Arena.

"We?ll just kind of wait and see," Matta said. "He looks pretty good. We?re going to take it slow.

"But by the same token, I think it?s a little bit obvious we need him back on the court. But not till he?s healthy."

Ohio State has shot less than 40 percent from the field in each of its games without Sullinger. It shot better than 50 percent collectively in its first seven games.

The Buckeyes have four nonconference games remaining -- two this week and two next -- before they start Big Ten play Dec.28 at home against Northwestern.

"If he?s good and we have no risk, I?d like to ease him back in," Matta said of Sullinger, "because if you?re off for a two-week stretch or whatever it would be . . . it?s not quite as easy as riding a bike where you just get on and take off again. We?re going to continue to look at him in practice and gauge how he feels the next day."
