Coach Thad Matta said in a text message after practice that Sullinger?s back was ?still a little locked? yesterday and that he is being withheld from today?s game as a precaution in hopes the spasms will subside.
?He is telling me it feels better,? Matta said.
Sullinger?s father, Satch, said last night on Channel 10?s Wall to Wall Sports that the spasms may be caused by plantar fasciitis that has ?messed up (Jared?s) gait a little bit.?
Back spasms can be merely that or symptoms of an injury.

It's not fun and I know because I have it and it never goes away. You just treat it with exercises and live with it

Matta Q & A on Sullinger
Ohio State coach Thad Matta briefly discussed the Buckeyes' victory, and the 300th win of his career, after the game against Texas-Pan American. Much of his postgame interview, though, dealt with questions about the back issue that kept All-American center Jared Sullinger out of today's game:
Q: What is your prognosis for Jared?
A: Number one, today was a very precautionary measure. He?s got an aggravated disk. What happens there is the muscle tightens around that area. Unfortunately, I probably know a little bit too much about this stuff (Matta has had at least four lower back operations).
Things just have to calm down. We?ll take a look at him Monday (or) Tuesday and just (re)assess. But he?s feeling better every day. The muscle?s relaxing more every day, so that?s a great sign for us.
Q: Do you think this could be something that?s a yearlong issue that you have to be wary of, or do you think once you get past this, it?s over?
A: I think once we get past this, it?ll be over. I hope so.
The big thing is, just through the therapy and stretching, you can really strengthen that area and make it a non-issue.
