COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State Buckeyes are getting back to full strength in time for their Big Ten opener Wednesday night vs. Northwestern.

Getting their best player to full speed might still be a work in progress.

Ohio State coach Thad Matta said Tuesday the Buckeyes have had their full roster in practice the last couple of days and have had sophomore Jared Sullinger doing more than he's done basically all month.

Back spasms forced Sullinger to miss two games, including No. 2 Ohio State's only loss on Dec. 10 at Kansas. He injured his foot Dec. 17 and South Carolina and was forced out early.

The 6-foot-9 Sullinger, a National Player of the Year candidate, lost around 25 pounds last summer from a workout regimen that included running stadium stairs and boxing in addition to his basketball workouts. His injuries kept him from moving like he's used to, meaning he had to shake off more than rust in wins last week over Lamar and Miami-Ohio.

"I think physically he's fine," Matta said. "After (last) Thursday night's game there was some swelling on his foot, but (he's fine).

"Our guys practice an hour or 40 minutes or so and then stay after and work out, and he went an extended time without that. I think it's just more him getting his reps, getting his wind, getting his lift, getting back into it."

Jared Sullinger healthy for Ohio State
ESPN.com news services

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- For a change, No. 2-ranked Ohio State is healthy.

Big man Jared Sullinger appears to be close to being healthy for the first time in three weeks. He missed two games with back spasms, and most of another with an injured ankle. After missing a lot of conditioning drills in practice, and playing sparingly in games, he still isn't in game shape.

"It is going to take him time," coach Thad Matta said before Tuesday's workout. "It's just the getting back to doing the reps. Physically, he's fine. After Thursday night's game (a 69-40 win over Miami University) there was some swelling in his foot."

Matta is more concerned about the wear and tear of keeping him on the floor, staying in the rhythm of the game without getting fatigued or in foul trouble.

"Our guys have come in and practiced for an hour and 40 minutes and guys stay after, they work out," he said. "He went extended time without that. I think it's more just him getting his wind, getting his lift, getting back into the flow of things."

Sully was wearing LeBron Solider V's at the start of the year, then the team LeBron 9's, but the last few games (since Lamar I believe) he's been the Jordan Retro 14:

Hopefully they have better soles :)

- Jared Sullinger also gave credit to the Hoosiers and freshman center Cody Zeller, who scored 14 points before fouling out.
"Give all the credit to Indiana. They came out and played hard and got the 50-50 balls and made us turn the ball over. Indiana played a great basketball game," he said.
Zeller, Sullinger said, is "very creative around the rim, and he's strong. A lot of freshmen don't come in strong and ready to play Big Ten basketball. The Big Ten is a very physical conference, as you could see today.
"Give Zeller all the respect. He played one hell of a game."

On a personal note, I think that Sullinger's foot/back is bothering him. It just doesn't seem to run right IMO but maybe it is just my imagination.

Big Ten's player of the week

Ohio State sophomore Jared Sullinger was named the Big Ten's player of the week in men's basketball, the first time this season he's won the award. He earned the honor four times last season.

Sullinger averaged a double-double (23.5 points, 10 rebounds) in Ohio State's wins over Nebraska and Iowa. After scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds against the Cornhuskers, he had a season-high 28 points against the Hawkeyes.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said the day before the game that Sullinger is ?arguably the best-passing big man in the game.? He got to appreciate the full package once the game started.

Sullinger?s 28 points were a season high. His 13 field goals tied a career high, and for added measure he tacked on four steals, also tying his career high.

?Sometimes you try to simulate it (in practice),? McCaffery said, ?but he?s a hard guy to simulate because he?s just so quick, he?s so elusive for a guy with that size.

?He?s got the best pair of hands I?ve ever seen. He catches everything. He finishes everything. And he?s amazingly quick, whether it?s a spin or an up-and-under, whatever he?s doing.?

Illinois game

Sullinger, incidentally, wore down noticeably as the game wore on, I'm guessing from so often having to chase Meyers Leonard downcourt in transition. More than once, one of Sullinger's teammates had to cover Leonard while Sullinger caught up, which led to an open look elsewhere for the Illini before the defender could recover.

Sullinger went so far as to blame himself for the loss after the game, saying, "This one's on me."

Told that he wasn't the one guarding Paul, Sullinger replied, "Yeah, but still, there were a lot of other things I could have done, and I'll take responsibility for that."

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Just in case there was any confusion, Ohio State sophomore Jared Sullinger on Friday repeated what he'd first said after the Buckeyes lost to Illinois on Tuesday night. He has someone to blame for that third road loss of the season -- himself.

And when asked about teammate Aaron Craft's comments about not every Buckeye playing hard, Sullinger had an idea who that was about. He blames himself there, too.

"There were times in the Illinois game where I kind of took a break on the defensive end instead of the offensive end," Sullinger said. "And it cost us. So, honestly, I was one of those people, and honestly, I have to stop that."

After an All-America freshman season in which he averaged 17.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, Sullinger is averaging 17.4 points this season (tied for 67th in the nation) and 9.3 rebounds (38th in the nation). He missed two games with a back issue and all but six minutes of a third game with a foot injury in December, and then he has rounded into shape after basically not practicing for three weeks because of his back. After last weekend's win at Iowa, when he had a season-high 28 points, OSU coach Thad Matta said, "I think Jared is finally feeling good."

That's physically. But after a phenomenally successful high school and AAU career -- and a 34-3 record with the Buckeyes as a freshman -- Sullinger is obviously uncomfortable at 15-3, with the Buckeyes losing two of their past four.

"I haven't lost like this in I don't know how long," Sullinger said. "Every time I lose around the third or fourth game, it's the end of the season. So I really didn't know how to handle it."

One thing Sullinger did was take a break from his social-media interactions on Twitter, where he typically posts several times a day and has, on multiple occasions, taken messages from those who criticized his play and sent them out to his followers as a way of motivating himself and taking on his critics.

"I had some nasty remarks on Twitter to the point where I was going to take my frustrations out on someone else," Sullinger said. "I'm back to having tunnel vision and trying to stay away from all the negativity that people are saying."

Another change Sullinger plans to make is on defense. Against Illinois, while dealing with an athletic 7-footer in Meyers Leonard, Sullinger didn't do enough to help against the Illini guards when they were coming off screens. He could face the same issue Sunday with Indiana big man Cody Zeller, and he said the Buckeyes must have enough faith in their teammates to trust they'll get help if they leave their man to provide aid.

OSU men's basketball: Sullinger turns over new leaf
By Bob Baptist
The Columbus Dispatch Sunday January 15, 2012

Jared Sullinger was sitting a few yards from Aaron Craft in the noisy bowels of Illinois? Assembly Hall on Tuesday night when, after another frustrating defeat, Craft told reporters that no one knows which Ohio State men?s basketball team is going to show up on a given night.

Whether Sullinger heard him is immaterial. He didn?t need to.

?He was kind of singling out me,? Sullinger said. ?There were times in the Illinois game where I just kind of took a break on the defensive end instead of the offensive end, and it cost us.

?I was one of those people who played hard when I wanted to, and I have to stop that.?

If Sullinger does, maybe his teammates will, too.

After close losses in two of their past four games, the fifth-ranked Buckeyes are not playing like the overwhelming favorite they were in the preseason to win another Big Ten championship and make a run at the Final Four. They have lost as many games in their first 18 as they did in 37 a year ago.

As a result, their All-America center said he is turning over a new leaf heading into a much-anticipated rematch with No. 7 Indiana today at Value City Arena. The Hoosiers handed the Buckeyes a 74-70 loss on New Year?s Eve in Bloomington, Ind.

?Coach Matta always talks about how we have another gear where we can take our game to the next level,? Sullinger said. ?I guess our coaches feel that I?m the best player, so they feel like if I take my effort and leadership to a whole ?nother level, everybody else is going to follow.?

That began less than two hours after Tuesday?s loss, when Sullinger bid adieu indefinitely to his nearly 65,000 followers on Twitter.

?I?m taking a social-media vacation,? he wrote. ?I?m done with y?all.?

?I had some nasty remarks on Twitter, to the point where I?m just going to take my frustrations out on something else,? Sullinger said on Friday. ?I?m back to having tunnel vision and just trying to stay away from all the negativity.?

I sincerely hope Sullinger turns it on and wins the POY award. Everyone seems to have Robinson ahead for this award. I respect Sullinger coming back to play this season. Many players say they are coming back after a loss like Sully did after the UK game last year. Few mean it once they know they are a lotto pick.

The Kansas people act like Sullinger could have played against them, ignoring the fact he was getting over an injury and it is a long season.
I think Sullinger is a far better shooter than T.Robinson, handles the ball better and is just as good a rebounder. tOSU has more weapons than Kansas so it is harder to pile the stats on one player. I do hope Sullinger scores 25-30 each game the rest of the way, and has some big numbers, the Buckeyes need to start pushing him media-wise for what he has done.
I am a UK fan,but I have to give respect where it is due. Sullinger is 1st class.
