Sullinger working his way back

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State Buckeyes are getting back to full strength in time for their Big Ten opener Wednesday night vs. Northwestern.
Getting their best player to full speed might still be a work in progress.
Ohio State coach Thad Matta said Tuesday the Buckeyes have had their full roster in practice the last couple of days and have had sophomore Jared Sullinger doing more than he's done basically all month.
Back spasms forced Sullinger to miss two games, including No. 2 Ohio State's only loss on Dec. 10 at Kansas. He injured his foot Dec. 17 and South Carolina and was forced out early.
The 6-foot-9 Sullinger, a National Player of the Year candidate, lost around 25 pounds last summer from a workout regimen that included running stadium stairs and boxing in addition to his basketball workouts. His injuries kept him from moving like he's used to, meaning he had to shake off more than rust in wins last week over Lamar and Miami-Ohio.
"I think physically he's fine," Matta said. "After (last) Thursday night's game there was some swelling on his foot, but (he's fine).
"Our guys practice an hour or 40 minutes or so and then stay after and work out, and he went an extended time without that. I think it's just more him getting his reps, getting his wind, getting his lift, getting back into it."

Jared Sullinger healthy for Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- For a change, No. 2-ranked Ohio State is healthy.
Big man Jared Sullinger appears to be close to being healthy for the first time in three weeks. He missed two games with back spasms, and most of another with an injured ankle. After missing a lot of conditioning drills in practice, and playing sparingly in games, he still isn't in game shape.
"It is going to take him time," coach Thad Matta said before Tuesday's workout. "It's just the getting back to doing the reps. Physically, he's fine. After Thursday night's game (a 69-40 win over Miami University) there was some swelling in his foot."
Matta is more concerned about the wear and tear of keeping him on the floor, staying in the rhythm of the game without getting fatigued or in foul trouble.
"Our guys have come in and practiced for an hour and 40 minutes and guys stay after, they work out," he said. "He went extended time without that. I think it's more just him getting his wind, getting his lift, getting back into the flow of things."
